  1. QUOTE (Leonard of Berwyn @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 09:24 AM) How about Charlie Manuel with Jim Thome as assistant, eventually taking over for Manuel. I think Manuel's health is a big issue for him anymore. He would be good, but i just dont know that he could do it.
  2. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 09:44 AM) I think Jay is part of the reason the stats on the offensive line look bad. I think he has a slow release and takes too much time to make decisions and while he has good footwork he does not necessarily move well in the pocket to avoid pressure. Football more than any other sport is coaching. Coaching can improve a team greatly. I don't know why Trestman's trajectory is what it is but he seems early on like a Mike McCarthy type that has a system that breeds offensive success. I laos think many people give guys credit because they are working in teh NFL and they may not necessarily be that good (i.e Schiano). Lovie lost his job because he could not figure out how to get someone that could run an offense. He also focused on defense only and the offense blew. His death blow was probably the input he had on Shea McClellan, that reeks of a bad Lovie player evaluation (see Jaron Gilbert). I think a draft and offseason with a defensive slant and things will look better. Also as I pointed out earlier football is all about coaching and Mel Tucker trying to change to the Bears scheme may not have been a good idea after all. He tried to keep it the same as much as possible, even keeping the same verbage in the calls. This was one of the things that was talked about a lot in the preseason.
  3. Jose Valentin. Bring back the stache
  4. QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 01:07 AM) Nobody said that, it's actually much better. J'Marcus Webb rated as our best, and his aggregate rating over 16 games would put him as our 5th best this year. PFF does say, though, that our line is still bad at pass blocking. Jay was "under pressure" in 38.7% of his dropbacks this year. Peyton Manning (whose line is on the opposite end of the spectrum) was under pressure on 21% of dropbacks. This is actually a portion of a percent higher than the past two years, but much lower than 2010 when it was off the charts (43%). He was at 22% in Denver as well, btw, and 28% in his first year in Chi-town. Another way to look at it is pass blocking efficiency for our line. On 45.7% of dropbacks, Jay was hurried, hit, or sacked. 22% for Manning. What might really blow your mind is that almost half these hurries/hits/sacks came from Jordan Mills. Replace Mills with an average player (roughly the level of play from Webb last year, fwiw) and our pass blocking rating goes to middle of the pack for the league. This statistic is even worse than Arizona, whose PFF rating is actually much worse than ours. PFF gives relative weights to hurries, hits, and sacks. Jay has been hit and sacked relatively little given the amount of pressures and hurries he's had, which is likely due to scheme and decision-making. Our line seems better because 1. The majority of the bad is concentrated on one player and 2. we have an o-coordinator that can scheme to cover up our weaknesses. Why would you compare Jay to Manning in this situation? Peyton has long been one of the absolute best at getting rid of the ball extremely fast and not taking sacks, to compare the Bears new line to his veteran line just seems disingenuous in comparison. What is the average? How much have the bears improved from last year to this year? And putting the spotlight on Mills doesnt seem fair either. For a kid that wasnt even expected to play, having him out there not false starting and holding his own while he learns on the job is pretty impressive to me.
  5. The bears should sign the Texans recently discarded pot smokers
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 07:24 PM) What will it cost to franchise Cutler? Franchise him for a year or even two, draft a QB, and see what happens. I think it is the average of the top 3 contracts at the position
  7. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 04:53 PM) The reason the Bears offense had been s***ty was due to inept coaching. The reason the Bears defense is s***ty is because the players got old. One is considerably easier to fix than the other. and a lack of actual playmakers. Emery has brought in Marshall, Jeffery, Bennett, and an actual offensive line.
  8. Cutler is smart, and he is tough. He knows he needs to play as much as he can this season to make his bread. This is his big money payday, after this contract, it is very unlikely that he sees another one that will come close to what he gets. this may sound stupid, but I wonder if PEDs are even a safe option for him. IIRC his diabetes makes it so he cant even take most painkillers(ie. why he didnt get a shot during the championship game). I wonder if PEDs would mess with him in the same way
  9. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 04:04 PM) Next year's QB class is really deep and pretty good. It seems like everytime this is said, it does not come true
  10. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 12:53 PM) He wants that white chocolate. I think he probably wants whatever flavor candy he can get, at any time he wants it
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 12:13 AM) GREG, nobody WANTS them, per se, they're just the best possible options or "lesser of two evils." There's just not any top tier 3B available on the free agent market, and the trade market.....there might be guys like Seager and Lawrie but they're going to cost Santiago. Nobody clearly better than Ramirez at SS on the free agent market. And while everyone would prefer to have Brandon Phillips to Gordon Beckham, if you factor in the talent we would have to give up, his age and contract due into his mid 30's, it makes ZERO sense. Waiving Adam Dunn makes no sense....even if you kept Konerko, what LH hitters would we have then to balance out the line-up? Same thing with DeAza....it's Alejandro at $4.4 million or Granderson at $12-15 million, 90% would think the differential's not worth it...and when you add in the length of the contract and it going into his mid 30's again, like Phillips maybe only 3-5% would favor it. The Tigers had two Cy Young pitchers in Scherzer and Verlander, two MVP candidates in Cabrera/Fielder (well, until this year), Torii Hunter, Austin Jackson, Peralta, etc. Then you have Sanchez, Fister, Porcello and Smyly, perhaps the best collection of pitching outside of StL and Atlanta....although some would argue with PLAYOFF Verlander and Scherzer they're the best top 4 in baseball. Eh, they are guys. I wouldnt say those guys make them perhaps the best collection.
  12. Chalmers is good for the heat, I just dont like his faux tough guy act.

Has anyone heard Sound City "Mantra" featuring Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and Trent Reznor? I never thought I would put those three in a music ensemble, but I love it. I never heard of this movie/documentary by Grohl, but I want to see it now http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2306745/
  14. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 09:30 AM) I bet Greg Jennings wishes he was still catching passes from Aaron Rodgers. When he bashed on Rodgers earlier this season, it made absolutely zero sense
  15. Angelo missing on so many drafts after the superbowl year came home to roost this season. It really sucks, but it is true. Emery's first draft is magnified because of it. Angelo literally bought himself some time when he signed Peppers, but now Peppers is looking human and making too much money
  16. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 12:49 PM) This is the Bears/Packers all star injured team QB - Jay Cutler WR - James Jones and Randall Cobb TE - Jermichael Finley RB - James Starks DL - Henry Melton, Nate Collins, Clay Matthews, Nick Perry LB - Lance Briggs, Brad Jones and DJ Williams CB - Casey Hayward and Kelvin Hayden You can put peanut in the CB group too. He hasnt been right pretty much all season
  17. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 11:20 AM) What's up with all these serious injuries on pedestrian looking plays? Cutler's sack looked totally normal and Wayne looks like he was just diving for the ball. Melton and Collins both blew their knees out without any undercutting or anything either. Just a freak year
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 10:07 AM) Any word on Cutler yet? supposed to be released this afternoon. Emery has a press conference scheduled for around 1:30, Trestman at 12:30
  19. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 09:46 AM) I'm guessing that that really isn't much solace to Mike Illich. No, but it helps with the spending money part if you are making more money going deeper into the playoffs.
  20. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 09:38 AM) With all of their spending, Detroit has as many WS titles since 2006 as the Cubs or Sox. They did get there twice though, which the Sox and Cubs have not since 06
  21. Reggie Wayne confirmed torn ACL
  22. Wite, I do believe Jake just told you to STFU
  23. Informed the organization shortly after they lost to Boston. A press conference scheduled for later http://deadspin.com/report-jim-leyland-to-...dspin+Excerpts)
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 08:42 AM) Weeden blows, but the Browns are tough otherwise. The Bills also haven't had a game this year where they didn't have a chance to win late. Those are two very, very tough games coming up for them still. It's crazy to think that the Chiefs are still undefeated, because I don'tt hink I've ever seen the NFL with so much parody. With the exception of the Jags, it really does feel like anyone can beat anyone right now on any given day. The NFL is frequently featured on SNL
  25. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 08:14 AM) Finley is still in the hospital. Scary injury. Is it neck? Concussion? I had my parents over yesterday so I didnt really get a good look at the replay
