White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
Steve9347 replied to Chisoxfn's topic in 2011 Season in Review
QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 01:46 PM) Sox have a new marketing slogan for 2011 already. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2010/12/09/whi...-and-billboard/ I liked when Kenny said it, but I hate it as a slogan. It also drives me nuts how poorly designed that billboard is... -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 02:16 PM) There has been more information reported accurately on this board than he has done this offseason. He broke the Dunn story with direct information taken from this site and other writers. Stop saying that. Joe Cowley didn't find out about Dunn from f***ing Soxtalk.

QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 09:21 PM) Holy Crap, CT! He is not human.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 10:39 AM) You aren't. I'd be blown away if he got that. I predict $5m/1
-
Gordon Beckham on the score at or around 10:40am CT.
-
There is nothing that would please me more than for Jake Peavy to show up and look like the dominant pitcher he once was.

I find Cowley quite entertaining. I have nothing against him.

Crawford to Boston, $142 Million, 7 Years
Steve9347 replied to Leonard Washington's topic in The Diamond Club
Carl Crawford, ages 34, 35, 36 will be making somewhere in the region of 20.3 million bucks per year. Those are going to be hilarious years. -
QUOTE (Wanne @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 04:44 PM) I really don't get the Pierre bashing by some. Is the guy an all-star or anything...no. But once he got going he was pretty effective and when he was on base he was a huge distraction on the bases. I'd welcome Pierre back as out starting LF in a heartbeat. He was REALLY effective at recording outs.

QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 12:49 PM) Dig the sig Steve People are just loving this thing! Thanks, yo.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 03:58 PM) He was a top 5 pick in a loaded draft and was a top 10 player in the greatest HS class of all time. What scouts dropped the ball on him? No question. Not only was he selected 5th, but the team with the 3rd pick that took OJ Mayo (the Timberwolves) traded to get him... so the team with the third priority after Rose/Beasley preferred him. Sandwiched in between Mayo and Love was Russell friggin' Westbrook. I'd say he was pretty highly regarded.

QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 02:38 PM) Really? Zero confidence? Care to articulate why? You have to be one hell of a hitter to play 1B or DH in the American League. He does not have the athleticism to play 3B, despite a couple lucky plays there last year, and I don't see a conversion to corner outfield in his future. I don't see him ever being disciplined enough to man such a position in the AL.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 11:23 AM) So is he just prime trade bait now? Seems like he's blocked for 3 years now. I have no problem trading him with his value being pretty high. I'd love for the White Sox to get some value for him as we're in win-now mode and I have absolutely zero confidence that he will be a difference maker in the bigs.

QUOTE (TomPickle @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 02:09 PM) Ozzie's real lineup optimizer.
-
QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 11:20 AM) I would send Floyd and Q What? Why? Yeah, we all are down on TCQ, but as horrific as he is in right field, we have a CF who can make up for some lost range. Quentin put up a 117 OPS+ last year and we all know he is capable of more when healthy. We won't even be depending on him as much as we really needed him last year. Add to that Floyd had a 107 ERA+ vs. Garza's 101, and I'll say you crazy!

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 11:38 AM) That's a great measuring stick. We get it. You don't like the signing. If it's because of Putz, he made his choice and that would have been it had we been waiting for Paulie or not. If you'd have preferred Derrek Lee, wait until his contract figure comes in... I'd rather have the team leader coming off a great year than Lee coming off a very, very bad season. The terms Paulie took on his contract makes for a wonderful bargain. I am shocked, after the things we were hearing the last two days, that you'd be upset with 12/12/6.5 deferments. Life could be worse. This time last week we thought we were headed to a rebuild, and today we can look forward to the following lineup in some fashion: LF Pierre 2B Beckham CF Rios 1B Konerko DH Dunn RF Quentin C Pierzynski SS Ramirez 3B Morel/Vizquel We also know that Kenny will talk trade. He knows just as well as we do that he needs bullpen players, and he'll get them. I guarantee he doesn't sign Konerko to that contract without assurance from Jerry that he can get some arms for the pen, too.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:37 AM) What angers me is that these ballplayers who are already incredibly wealthy, and claim that their number 1 priority is to win, seem to forget about that come contract negotiation time. Couldn't the guy survive on $10 million a year so we could have signed Putz? Or some other bullpen arms? PK's demands have the potential to hamstring us a bit here, and it frustrates me to no end that the guy doesn't care about that. I'm happy the guy is back. His bat is definitely going to be needed. But I'm also going to look at him in a much different light now then I did just a week ago. I think you are way off on this. Carlos Pena, he of the .196 batting average, just got a $10 million dollar deal. Konerko wanted a $45 million deal and got a 37.5 deal with deferred money. We got a hometown discount, and had he signed this exact contract last Friday vs. playing his cards an extra two working days, you'd say nothing about it. The contract is less than market value and more than fair, and we're lucky to have Paulie back.

QUOTE (Capn12 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 10:02 AM) 30 doubles, 30 homers, .350 OBP, Definitive Team Captain...thats reason enough for the pricetag. I mean, Dunn and Konerko both for under $30 mill a year and people are still complaining? People will ALWAYS complain.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 09:58 AM) I think I might like your Sig better than mine Thanks yo, though yours has a nice amount of hilarity.
-
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 09:46 AM) 37.5M over 3 years per ESPN. 12.5 per? That's perfectly acceptable and the White Sox will finally retain one of theirs til the end.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 09:23 AM) Apples and oranges. In the NBA, it's a very important thing to keep your assets. If your draft picks are decent players, the onus is on you to keep them. You let both Deng and Gordon go, and your team is basically restarting completely. In baseball you can keep piling on signees based on what you choose to spend each year. Freely retool in MLB. Meanwhile, Deng had to be re-signed b/c the Bulls were already dealing with Hinrich/Nocioni/Ben Wallace contracts and what not. Deng was seen as both a key player and a potentially tradeable guy (injuries since diminished that, but I still wouldn't be surprised to see him the principle in a deal before his contract runs out) Also as far as all the anger over what Deng makes per year, I don't know what NBA fans expect to pay for a 6'9" player who gets you 18 and 7, highly regarded defensively and low turnover. 8M? 9M? No way. Eh, your argument to assets may be valid, but there is also a defined limit to how much you can pay your entire roster. This is why losing Deng would have been more valuable than keeping him at that contract level.

QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 09:31 AM) Another example of why athletes should talk about sports and um... sports. This.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 04:53 PM) If Paulie wants to be the highest paid guy on the team, that is fine, but he'll have to be on another team. Heck, Peavy makes more than he does anyway and Buehrle was pretty close. ^^

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 11:29 AM) Sometimes even cute things need sleep. I demand a refund.
