Good article but I don't understand the "balance the line-up with 8 right handed batters" part. Aren't Pierre, Pierzynski and Teahen left-handed? That would be 3 LH with 6 RH regulars if Jones was DH and 4 with 5 if Kotsay were the DH.

QUOTE (Chi Town Sox @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 11:48 AM) Those are the exact 5 players that I was thinking about as well - 4 out of 5 are in the NL. Although maybe not too much of a difference - you could also make an argument on quite a few of those players pitching in some pretty low pressure markets too. 9th inning save situation, the opposing team's pitcher is not hitting...so no NL vs. AL argument. A save situation is many times a pressure situation so one would think that pressure would trump any market pressure...the "boos" come when you screw up not before you screw up.

QUOTE (Felix @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) He's a terrible 3B. UZR/150 of -10.9 last year and -10.1 for his career. I'm not looking forward to watching him there next year. Hopefully Kenny didn't listen to the same scouts that told him Betemit could play SS.

Fields playing worse in Minors than in the Majors

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2009 -> 12:11 PM) I'd say it's very, very likely that Josh gets moved this offseason. Disappointing because of all the potential that we'll be failing to harvest, but really, he's not taking 3b away from Beckham and we're very unlikely to move any out of Getz, Nix, or Ramirez this offseason. I think Josh will retire after this season. He almost quit after hitting 23 homers in a short season, why wouldn't he quit after a season like this. -
Gordon Beckham impresses while loading generic corn flakes into a box, mid-shift call up replacing Josh Fields on Saltines likely.
-
I foresee a CQ homer
-
Hopefully he gets Cuddyer and then a battle of Buehrle vs. Crede...maybe Crede will pull a Favre (like he did for his buddy Strahan). But in this case the record belongs to his other old teammate? What to do?
-
Buehrle has so many accolades already, I kinda want to see Bobby keep his record intact...(Reverse Jinx)

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jun 27, 2009 -> 12:39 AM) We have zero reason to rush Flowers here unless we are converting him to a 1B/DH. I also feel the same way about Viciedo. Well, I'm not so sure the White Sox signed Viciedo to a $10+ million deal to have him sit in the minors for several years. Basically, we'd have paid him $7 million to spend 2+ years in the minors and then come up to the White Sox when he is ready, give us 1+ good year and then hit the FA market where he gets paid a ton by the Yankees, Mets or Red Sox. Bring him up...there is no arbitration clock on the guy.

Anyone keeping a "Betemit Tracker?" It would be good to compare to determine who the better player is.

Since contracts for "stars" are often bloated during the out-years, I'm looking at this from just the baseball perspective and not the finances: I vote YES: an ace is worth giving up a potential #3 solid pitcher (Richard ceiling) and likely an elite set-up man/closer (Poreda) unless you think he's going to develop more plus pitches. Not sure what we have with Ely and Hudson but we can replenish in the next few drafts and not be that far behind the development of these two. You can always look to the "future" and if we think that all of the Barons along with Quentin, Danks, Floyd will be the team in 2010-2011, we are kidding ourselves. The prospects will be eased in and in the meantime, we could have elite pitching for 4 years to help ease that transition.

Under contract through 2012 with a team option in 2013

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 18, 2009 -> 08:54 PM) Whatever we do, 80% of our focus and concentration in terms of making trades should be on either starting pitching or draft picks. This isn't the NBA or NFL, you can't trade draft picks in MLB.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 03:24 PM) RF isn't a premier position either especially when you don't have an elite arm (Carlos is FAR from elite), I'm talking about non-corner positions. A guy with maybe a little less production than Carlos but who is able to play a good CF would probably be considered more valuable. I only mentioned Markakis because we happen to be playing him right now and he's a better baseball player than Carlos. I'd trade Quentin for him in a heartbeat. Would you trade Beckham for Markakis? Just testing your man-love for the three players...so far I know Markakis > Quentin so just want to fit Beckham in the equation.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 12:51 PM) exigencies[/i]? It is a word but I'm not so sure it was used in context correctly...but then again, caulfield is the teacher in Thailand, I believe so maybe its used differently there.

Who would you rather see at the plate?

I'm bringing in Buehrle from the bullpen to pinch hit... -
You probably won't get to do anything as he'll be out with an injury and won't be playing. I love Joe and appreciate everything he did for this organization but the odds of him being hurt due to that back are greater than 50%.

I usually like the "separated at birth" picture threads but this was awful. I think Getz looks more like Cook than Morneau...except for the white thing, oh and the two ears and nose (lol) thing as it appears Cook only has one ear.
-
Maybe this is like a "New Order" thread where the title has nothing to do with the content (lyrics). Either way, Jerry Owens bunting is something I'm most looking forward to this spring.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Feb 12, 2009 -> 10:17 AM) What makes you think he can do that? .263 and 23 HRs in 100 games in '07

QUOTE (MO2005 @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) 2009 version of 2005? What a joke! Come on Anderson is no way near the player Rowand is. Yes Rowand is a little overrated, but Anderson is a little leaguer at best. Come on with that comparison man. Fields will strike out about 200 times in a year so that will lower some percentages. How do you call that a replacement when the guy strikes out about 2 times the amount Dye does? The replacement for Dye is Viciedo but for whatever reason, if he doesn't pan out right away, then Fields will provide some of the power lost from Dye. Fields should be able to hit .270 with 35+ HRs regardless of strikeouts so while he is not JD now, he gives some of what JD would provide. Plus remember, the 2009 version of 2005 has CQ has Dye's replacement, which is not a downgrade. Owens is Pods and Anderson is Rowand. What's a joke? The fact that you think Grinder Rowand is wayyyyyyy better than Anderson?!? Let's look at the tools: Hitting for Avg: Rowand > Anderson Hitting for Power: Anderson >/= Rowand Fielding his position: Anderson > Rowand Arm Strength: Anderson > Rowand Baserunning: Anderson > Rowand (Speed may be equal but Rowand was atrocious on the basepaths, often running into outs, etc.) I have faith...just my opinion.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 04:07 PM) Yeah, so you are just making this up, and thats nice. Is this a discussion forum or a reference forum? I didn't know that everything had to be fact and that people should only use this space to cite sources (what we have other websites and news sites for). I wasn't stating anything as a known fact, it was my opinion. If it was otherwise, I would have said so.

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 03:37 PM) ok and like everyone has been saying, why would anyone want JD at 12mil? kw would have to take on a lot of that salary Ok, so give up JD and $3 mill for Bailey and Dickerson...you still save $ and use your Swisher investment (Dayan) instead of plowing the JD money back in.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 11, 2009 -> 03:37 PM) huh...I don't know about that. Winning someone over with batting practice? He won them over when they signed him...he made them feel confident in his abilities with BP. If he doesn't pan out, they can still go with an outfield of Owens, Anderson, and CQ (a 2009 version of Pods, Rowand, and Dye). They have replaced Dye's slugging with Fields at 3rd. So yes.

I have been saying since the off season started that Abreu makes sense and KW will be very interested in him. It may have been that the Sox were waiting on a contingency to occur but in reality, the $8M offer was never on the table as a guy that wanted 3 yr/$45M will not suddenly take $3M less when he is already getting "peanuts." Now methinks that Dye will still be traded and the real reason that KW didn't put a realistic offer on the table for Abreu is that Mr. Viciedo won him over with his apparent weight loss and BP sessions. Dayan will be our RF. No one has argued that he can hit and he likely has shown off quite a bit to the Sox brass. His weakness may be his "obesity" but he didn't look so fat in Cubano's video post. He also has a cannon arm. His mobility and range can't be any worse than Dye (or even Abreu) so we really are not losing much in the field. Now, he has some high expectations though at the plate...
