QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 07:15 PM) LOL. Well I guess that settles that. Since you think there is a lot wrong with him, despite your admited bias against him, there must be something wrong with him. You say that he's not a great pitcher, because of the rough year he had in 2004, but then completely ignore the reasons why he became a good pitcher last year. It wasn't just luck. But whatever, keepin on hatin. No, I've said he's not as good as everyone here thinks he is (which is the greatest thing since sliced bread). I think he can be a good #4 or #5 starter if he stays on his career averages. If he does what he did in the second half of 2005 on a consistant basis, then I'll say he's a top tier starter. Until I see that though, I'll keep thinking what I think about him.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 06:54 PM) Considering Contreras is 35-18 for his career, you sure do find a lot wrong with him. He also has a career 4.28 ERA (league average ERA of 4.53 during that time) and 1.31 WHIP, which doesn't look like one of the best pitchers in the league to me. And the reason I find a lot wrong with him is because there is a lot wrong with him.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 05:52 PM) I'm getting sick and tired of reading people saying Joe only had one good half in 2005. Look at his splits. He had a rough June and July. 5/7 (yes I'm including the postseason) of the year he was a great pitcher. It takes consistancy to be one of the best pitchers in the league, which is what everything here seems to think Contreras is.

Why would anyone want Piazza in the field? He's not a catcher, or a first baseman..

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 03:55 PM) It's not hard to understand if you actually listen. I've never understood why people hae such a hard time making out what he says. I can understand him just fine. Seconded. Its the same with my calc teacher in school (he's from Libya). If you are paying attention, its easy to understand. If you are sort of half listening/half doing something else, it'll be hard.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 02:37 PM) Does any Big Ten team at home lose? (except for the North Dakota stats game? lol) Minnesota lost to Michigan, Northwestern, and Wisconsin at home. -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 03:24 PM) That's another thing I don't understand. Some people say Contreras only pitched well for half a season, the Sox should get something for him and put BMac into the rotation. BMac didn't pitch well on the big league level for half a season, what makes these people so sure BMac is a sure thing but Contreras is not? Its all a mute point, KW said he isn't trading any of the starters. When BMac was sent back down to AAA, he fixed his delivery. Fixing a delivery is a much easier thing to fix than someone's confidence, and it usually stays fixed, unlike confidence.

That explains a lot.

Minnesota won! Wow, I'm really amazed. Anyone know if they rushed the court? (I had to go to work, completely forgot I had to work today) -

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 01:43 PM) I think Minny is gonna win this game up 17 with 3 minutes left and at home. 3 minutes left in the first half They still have the whole second half to blow it -
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 01:33 PM) You SEVERLEY underrate Jose. It seems like you have some grudge against him for whatever reason, but whatever. You really believe Brandon, next season, is going to put up the numbers Count did, and more("I believe BMac can do everything Contreras can do at the least")? I really am excited for Brandon, but you need to realize what Contreras brought to this team in 2005, and more importantly, down the stretch. Yea, I do underrate him. I know this, and its pretty apparent But he's extremely overated on this board. Yes, he carried this team the second half of this year, but for the rest of his career, he was nothing better than average (2003 is an exception; he was good). He was horrible in New York, and in Chicago in 2004. In 2005, he was average in the first half, and I think people forget that. He did everything he could for this team in the second half, and carried the team, but does doing it once make him one of the best pitchers in the league? No. If he does it again in 2006, then yea, I might tend to think that he really is an ace, but until that happens, I'll look at his entire career, rather than just half one season.

Minnesota is winning! I'll enjoy it while it lasts -
QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 01:18 PM) Too bad that isn't what you said. You said we are in trouble if Contreras is leading us to the WS, which, after last year, is just flat out wrong. No, I said we are in trouble if he is the one thing leading us to the World Series, meaning without him we cannot make it.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 01:19 PM) Please, enlighten me why you have these thoughts..... Jose Contreras Post All-Star Break: 103.1 IP 11-2 2.96 ERA .236 BAA Brandon McCarthy Post All-Star Break: 42.2 IP 3-1 1.69 ERA .201 BAA Granted, BMac didn't pitch in as many innings, but if his numbers are any indication of how he'll do over a longer period of time (they will probably decline a bit, but still). I also don't think Contreras is as good as everyone here thinks. He's had 1 good season (2003 + the second half of 2005), and has been average at best the rest of the time. Contreras is getting older (probably ~40), and who knows how long he can last with the workload he had in Cuba.
-
QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 01:04 PM) Yah. He did it last year. Must of used all of his "leading" up. We weren't in trouble last year when he led us from the All Star game on when we needed him the most. It's not like he was our #1 starter in the playoffs.... We can still make it to the playoffs/World Series without him. I believe BMac can do everything Contreras can do at the least, and trading Contreras also builds our team up for the future.
-
Might just be me, but I don't think that Contreras is the one thing that can lead us to the World Series this year, and if he is, we are in trouble.

QUOTE(rventura23 @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 12:10 PM) I dont see how the A's have a better staff, who are their starters: Loiza, Zito, Haren, Harden, Blanton? Zito and Street are good but nobody on that staff even had 15 wins, and Loiza has had one season with more than 12 wins Going off the top 5 starters on each team in 2005 (using El Duque) White Sox: 72 wins 1017 innings A's: 60 wins 805 innings and Loaiza and Vasquez were virtually even in these categories Wins are team dependant. Look at the other stats (ERA, WHIP) for a better indication of how a pitcher is.
-
Yea, I feel the same way. Good article, but I think the Sox have more pitching, or at least, the same amount, but better pitching.
-
They *do* need his power

QUOTE(dmbjeff @ Jan 29, 2006 -> 01:24 AM) if we traded count to the mets id rather it be with uribe and get jose reyes plus some bullpen help.....ozzie really wanted a #2 hitter with speed and reyes would fit the bill....he rarely walks, but he is still very good Why would we trade a better shortstop for a worse shortstop?

I might go a game or two in the final series of the year in Minnesota, or the one from August 18th-20th, but that all depends on ticket prices and how convenient it would be. (I'm going to Minnesota for college at about that time, so if I'm there around that time, I'll try to go)

Dunn could be a very effective DH in the AL. And yea, it says wonders that he played with a broken hand, and still did well.

QUOTE(DukeNukeEm @ Jan 28, 2006 -> 10:17 PM) and you didnt sign up ya puss I don't make sigs for competition, I hardly make them at all. So no, I didn't sign up.
