  1. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 08:19 PM) This is like when the ump warns both benches after the Sox player is hit. Agreed. I actually side with Jenks on this one, I think its ridiculous to say a J.D. is somehow a lesser doctorate than any other. But, Jenks was also the one who broke out the asshole card. So, I'm warning everyone. Try to keep the insults out of it.
  2. I'll take an even money bet right now, Daley is never indicted on any criminal charges. His lieutenants will be, but not him. I actually think that, most or all of the time, he himself was not involved in any direct corrupt practices. I think he says "we are going to do X", he finds people who he knows get s*** done, and tells them to find a way to get it done. He knows deep down that some of their methods may be wrong, but he doesn't deal with it. And that to me, was his failure. I think Daley does truly love Chicago, and really did want to make it a great city (which he had a major part in accomplishing). I think his results were generally quite good. But the "how" part he left to others, and never really dove into that aspect, because he didn't want to see it.
  3. Let's hope its just inflammation or something muscular that will heal quickly.
  4. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Is he even with the team yet? As of today, I believe, but I am not sure if he is physically in Detroit yet.
  5. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 03:59 PM) Call bulls*** all you want asshole, it's still a doctorate. I realize this is a sensitive topic, but let's keep the name-calling out of it. That warning goes for everyone in here.
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 02:06 PM) Viciedo! *ducks for cover* I'd like to see that. Won't happen.
  7. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) I just wanna know who rolled on Richie J. While that might be part of it, I'd also say there is the very real situation he's in, that he just doesn't want to do it anymore. I think he's worn down, and his wife's health may also be a part of this.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 03:08 PM) Mayor Rahm Emanuel? My opinion only, but, I'd bet that the setup here is to have some schmo take office, try to clean things up, fail miserably, look terrible, then Daley's son steps in.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 12:29 PM) In the long run we're all dead. More serious point...there's actually a big long-term set of points worth noting. First...interest rates on government bonds are at historic lows right now. Which means...it's far, far cheaper to do infrastructure work right now than it has been at any point since probably the 30's. Secondly, if, as I've argued...the right move is to be counter-cyclical...then by having people employed right now by the government, you're filling the very large output gap between what the economy could produce and what it is producing, and as such you're giving those businesses reluctant to invest funds because of lack of customers in the short term exactly what they need...customers in the short term. And as I said, short run, that helps, to a limited and linear extent. There is no multiplier, and there is no growth foundation put in place. And businesses are waiting on the sideline, in part, because they KNOW that the stimulus money is temporary and unsustainable in the long run. They will therefore only expand or increase their investment to match that temporary and small bump. Basically, its less bang for the buck than if they did something more pointed towards future growth.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 09:13 AM) I'm not sure "Done nothing" is an accurate description of how the huge private sector job losses stopped...but you should already have known I'd challenge you on that Well that's true, Done Nothing is a bit much. Just having more people employed, even in temporary jobs, will stimulate the private sector to an extent in the short run. But it does very, very little in the long run.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 09:07 AM) Construction spending on infrastructure was a big part of the stimulus the first time. That really has done nothing to get the private sector going. That was my point.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 08:44 AM) Considering that no matter what he proposed, it'd die in Congress, why not at least propose something with better balance between old and new infrastructure? Better to call the GOP's bluff. They have complained this stimulus spending does nothing to grow private business, well, give them one that does that. Make them stick to their guns.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 08:40 AM) That actually is a good point. Even if Thome came back, you still had to have Kotsay on the roster, because you need someone who can play 1B. You also still had to have Andruw on the team, because you need someone who can play CF. Thome on the team would have most likely meant no Santos. Teahen played 1B yesterday, has played it before, and is perfectly capable of the rare appearance over there. There really is no need to have Kotsay on this team if he is going to be useless with the bat.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 08:19 AM) So, I see the big new thinking is a $50 billion bank for investment in bridges, roads, airports, and rails. While I'll be the first to admit that's needed as a downpayment...that's not particularly exciting is it. Hell, if you're going to talk about infrastructure investment...why aren't the electrical grid and the water/sewer grids at least included on the list? They might be in more need than the others. Wrong path again.
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 08:12 AM) I should've mentioned, I took a Zyrtec yesterday (much earlier in the day). I'll try a Claritin now, though. There is also a Claritin-D version, that includes a decongestant.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 07:56 AM) The AA team seemed weak this year and the AAA team wound up mostly either called up or traded, but there seemed to be a lot of guys making noise at the lower levels too. As many others are saying, I think the AA team next year is likely to be quite good.
  17. If we somehow actually made ground on the Twins today - with us going against Verlander and the Twins throwing Liriano out there - I'd feel pretty damn good about our chances of making the playoffs. I know a one or two game swing is not everything, but somehow, the rest of the schedule just seems that much better the rest of the way.
  18. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 07:19 AM) In your experience, what is the best medicine for an incessantly stuffy/runny nose? I've had this problem for about a full day now and Nyquil/Theraflu have done nothing. Those meds probably don't have antihistamines, right? So you are probably allergic to something. Late August is a common time for allergies, one of the weeds gets bad this time of year. Try Claritin or the like.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 01:40 AM) I consider the Central lost. It's WC or bust, baby. Go Sox for the WC. You considered the Central lost back in March.
  20. QUOTE (11and1 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 01:59 AM) Any discussion of Ozzie's relative strengths and weaknesses has to take into account how bizarre this year has been. You can't pin the blame for the entire first half on Ozzie, just as you cannot give him all the credit for the entire second half. This team has been beyond streaky. Has Ozzie made bad on-field decisions this season? Absolutely.what manager hasn't? Has Ozzie made the right decisions this year, only to have usually reliabe players fail horribly? Absolutely, show me a team that hasn't happened to. The result is love/hate for Ozzie that has whipsawed as violently as the team's performance. As tired as I am of his truly idiotic rants, his feud with KW, his kids and all the other drama, he is the face of the franchise, and like it or not he keeps this team relevant in a town where the odds are always against that. How many other managers are nationally recognized by their first name alone? Ozzie sells tickets and draws national media attention--remembering that if you're the White Sox there is no such thing as bad publicity. He has certainly cost us some games--how many is for people smarter than me to figure out--but he also has his team back in a race that most of us considered a totally lost cause as recently as the ASB. I am not defending his inexplicable fondness for Kotsay or his part in management's inexplicable but collective decision to let Thome go. I'm just saying this team is still alive and actually showing more late-game resilience than we've seen in years. You can certainly blame Ozzie for the Sox trailing the Twins by 3.5 games, but then you gotta give him some of the credit for not trailing by 13.5, without Peavy and with an erratic Jenks. Oh, and speaking of managers we love to hate, "Gardy" is at the top of my list. He comes across as smug, arrogant and is hailed as a genius when in fact any of us could win with that lineup--even without Morneau and Nathan. And he plays dirty against us. I'd much rather beat on him than Ozzie. Now, could we please just get on with it and win another World Series? Great post. I may not agree with every single thing in it, but great perspective.
  21. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 12:16 AM) You managed to nail the symptoms of baseball retardedness that has plagued some of the members here. They'll even post stats to support their baseball retardedness. This is pushing it. Lay of with the "retarded" stuff, its pretty damn insulting.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 01:43 AM) I think we have a much better shot at WC. No way in hell KC wins one of the four in Minnie. You think there is "no way" that anything other than a 4 game sweep happens? You realize that sweeping a 4 game series for any team against any foe is pretty unusual, right?
  23. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 6, 2010 -> 04:40 PM) Viciedo end the season with a walk in this game. Phegley with the golden sombrero. All-in-all, this has been a an awful season for the Sox minor leagues. Hopefully Mitchell has a good AFL, and we can get excited about someone next year. The system doesn't look too hot, but you have to look at the injuries as well, as being a major reason for it. Mitchell, Thompson and Phegley all missed major time, and that's a big chunk of the top talent right there. Morel playing injured but still played well, Remenowsky and a few lower level guys got hurt too. Danks was playing hurt. I like the way the 2010 draft ended up, and I've liked all three of the most recent drafts. A lot of the guys above will likely come back strong in 2011. I'd bet this system looks a lot better next season, unless we trade away a bunch of key guys.
  24. Should have been a multiple option poll. Its a bit from almost everything on that list.
