Race for the worst 2018 record (Top 5 pick) again
southsider2k5 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Realistically, it won't be easy for the Sox to fall out of the top 5 or so. The bottom 3 teams have such a "lead" on the top picks, that even if the Sox play .500 ball for the rest of the season and finish 30 under, you won't get that many teams finishing with less than say 65 or 66 wins. These teams all have to play each other too, so there are wins out there. Last year the Sox finished 4th with 67 wins, with the Reds right behind them 5th at 68 wins. The 6th place team had 70 wins. -

I wonder who is getting their walking papers next? I guess I would rather keep Trayce versus Saunders or Presley, but meh. -
2018 White Sox draft picks and signings thread
southsider2k5 replied to southsider2k5's topic in FutureSox Board
It really is just to avoid the situation where the Astros were a couple of years ago with the Aiken situation. Imagine a situation where Nick Madrigal is set to sign a slightly under cap (say $1m) deal upon the completion of the CWS, and that money is going to Pilkington and Walker in some form. Walker and Pilkington combine to sign deals that put the Sox $1.1m over the caps, taking money from both Madrigal and some other savings. Tonight Nick Madrigal suffers a grotesque Jared Mitchell or Robin Ventura type of injury that has a really high chance of altering his career trajectory. The Sox decide he is no longer worth the risk at his former number, and instead offer him the minimum they can offer him and still get a comp pick the next year. Madrigal refuses to sign the deal, and instead decides to go back to school. At this point the Sox either have to void either the Pilkington and/or Walker deals, or give up a first round AND second round draft pick in 2019 (which current sits at #3 and about #46 overall) to pay them. So while the odds are small of this type of scenario happening, they aren't zero. Do you take THAT much risk, just to get Steele Walker into camp early, especially since he has been hurt anyway, or do you just wait out the CWS and see what happens? -
I can't really argue either of those. #1 definitively fits into marketing though. You have a chance at all of that publicity, but are crushing people for wanting to share your highlights? How stupid can you be. Someone mentioned Bill Wirtz earlier, but this is Wirtzian in its antiquities as a way of thinking. Take advantage of people wanting to be excited about your product. Anything else is ignorant. #2, kind of goes towards what I was talking about with cottage industries. For football the big one is fantasy football, but you could also include gambling in general. There are a fair amount of people who watch for those reasons, and really aren't connected to a team or city. Baseball just doesn't have that extra thing that draws people to watch. Again no one has been able to figure out a good draw to the game outside of the game itself. And as a bonus, I think by and large the people who have traditionally covered baseball are for the most part crusty old white guys who don't like change. There is more negativity that comes from baseball writers, than any other sport's own writers. If there were the level and enthusiasm for baseball as there was for other sports, the people reading about baseball would get a different feel for the game.

It would also dramatically shorten the short season leagues, or it would push them back into the middle of September. -
It is, and thanks for mentioning it. I will be the bigger person and walk away.
-
At the end of the day, I will swear to my grave it is all about marketing. I think out of the Big 3 sports, baseball is by far the worst marketed sport, while football at least WAS the best, at least until the flag crap came along. Football has built itself into a million cottage industries built around the experience, the NBA has continued to market its stars like no professional American sport, meanwhile baseball... Well, what? They have these incredible stars, but if you aren't in NYC, you barely hear about them. The experience of baseball is also like no other, but instead you have the media selling the story that this downtime is a bad thing, meanwhile NFL game times are up as well, and you barely hear anything about that.

2018 MiLB White Sox news and notes
southsider2k5 replied to southsider2k5's topic in FutureSox Board
Looks like June 2. http://m.whitesox.mlb.com/player/676569/logan-taylor?year=2018&stats=splits-r-hitting-mlb -
That is my point though, why is 11 minutes of action OK for football, but with lack of action in baseball, it is suddenly a dealbreaker? It means that isn't the real problem here.
-
Dude, this isn't that hard. He mentioned me in a post, for the second time in two days, without having responded to a post of mine. This is literally exactly what I said happened.
-
And the other one with hurt feelings.
-
Sez the guy who is mentioning me in threads without responding to my posts. ?♀️

In a 3 hour football game there is 11 minutes of actual play. https://qz.com/150577/an-average-nfl-game-more-than-100-commercials-and-just-11-minutes-of-play/

Where should I drop off the rent check for living in your head?
-
Or at that age, a spurt of growth or the like from the others. These kids are so freaking young, someone could come back 6 inches taller over a winter.
-
I'd take another TiQuan Forbes for him.
-
I am going to guess no, simply because the Sox have a bit of a roster crunch problem already, as they still have to add back Miguel Gonzalez, as well as thinking about adding other guys here in the future from the minors.
-
And that is fair. Though can you be sent back to the DSL after being brought to the US?
-
The problem is a good one. Where would he play? That team is full of players, including OFs. Who do you bench? Given the list of players there, I think Coronado would be the odd man out too. I mean I have no first hand knowledge of seeing any of these kids to be fair, but that said, I don't know who I would bench to make space for him either.
-
It is two different groups. I think that is what you are missing. This strategy completely failed against W, and it has failed against Trump. If the Dems want to turn this into revenge like you are talking about, historically it doesn't work.
-
If nothing else, it provides cover to the radical right's claim that they are also victims. It is a strategy that will fail for the Dems.
-
Considering almost all of that list is July2 signings, it would be incredible if that pipeline has really started to produce for the White Sox. That would give a backend to this rebuild of guys who will be coming along say 4-5 years down the road, which would supplement the cluster of guys due in the 1-3 year range. What a huge shot in the arm that would be.
-
But I thought Hermie injured him? Strange.

Robert adjusting to life in the minors

I want to say it was FutureSox who wrote an article in recent years about player development, and what potential benefits that franchises could see by organizations taking over small things like feeding players/diet. -
Easier player movement. Easier internal scouting. Easier movement of coaches and staff as needed. Easier allocation of resources in general. While it might be nice to see the Sox in a place like Indy or South Bend, it makes a lot of sense for the organization to be tightly knit the way that it is now. Also it really isn't easy to swap teams around, as MiLB teams only give up affiliations very rarely.
