2017-18 official NBA discussion thread
southsider2k5 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 29, 2018 -> 11:09 AM) I don't think there will be a standard "x amount of time" considering it's a concussion. I'd guess another week but maybe longer. You are supposed to be out 2 days for every day of symptoms, so it really isn't a clear thing. Depends on how bad it was and if he is still suffering. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 29, 2018 -> 10:37 AM) I think raBBit has invested heavily in a career path in finance/accounting and wants to see that through. He no doubt could be a Scott Merkin or Dan Hayes type IMO or even more since he has a far deeper understanding of the game, but I don't think that interests him at the moment. TBH, that is a thankless industry that is going through monumental change. These guys have no job security and maybe no future depending on what direction things go into. Information is so cheap and easy to access now, careers like journalism and related areas are just being decimated. I have been in Sports information in one form or another is something I have been involved in on the side for most of my adult life, but it is a bad place to be trying to make a living now. If I were him, I would be sticking with finance or accounting too. -

Marlins/Pirates may have violated spending rules
southsider2k5 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (WBWSF @ Jan 27, 2018 -> 06:29 AM) Both the Pirates and Marlins are going to have very low payrolls the next few years. Isn't that the same situation the White Sox are going to be in? After this season the White Sox will not have any long term contracts on the books and will probably have a lower payroll than either the Pirates or Marlins. I realize that people don't like to hear this but this White Sox franchise has become a goldmine for JR. I could keep my hands warm next to this take. -

You can't just take FVs at face value. A chunk of these guys will bust and/or disappoint. -

2018 MiLB White Sox news and notes
southsider2k5 replied to southsider2k5's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Jan 26, 2018 -> 11:30 AM) Thats the thing though, I have a running list of every roster in the organization including the DSL teams with everyone from Hector Acosta to Pablo Yanes covered, and I know that signings often don't play until the following year, but this guy had no information on him. With Sydney Pimentel and Jefferson Mendoza, both guys that signed for under $300k so not super well known, you could still find reports of their signing and things like pictures of them, small scouting reports, and general background. Camilo doesn't have any of that; he wasn't even listed on the baseball america international signing tracker. There are guys that fall more into the 5000 to 10000 range that never get reported. The next DSL will start, and they will just be there. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 26, 2018 -> 09:00 AM) The Sox sign a bunch of young Latin player into the DSL every year - most of the DSL rosters are filled with players you didn't hear about signing because they didn't get notable bonuses. This is probably one of those guys. Yeah, I would guess there are a ton of guys in their Dominican camp that we have no idea about yet. -

Sounds like he opens year at AA Birmingham Slavko Bekovic @SBekovic 16m16 minutes ago Also, Alec Hansen told me he had 3 missed calls from Tennessee while flying into Chicago for #SoxFest2018. It was Don Cooper. Coop is very excited to work with Hansen, couldn’t believe how tall he was when they met at the airport. #WhiteSox #NextSox

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 25, 2018 -> 10:26 AM) I would take Carlos Lee out of Eloy for sure, but would really hope he could be a tad better than him Peak Carlos Lee put up some impressive numbers. If Eloy is better than that, we are in pretty good shape.

The New Front in the Gerrymandering Wars: Democracy vs. Math
southsider2k5 replied to StrangeSox's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 25, 2018 -> 08:45 AM) 538 took a look at gerrymandering along different lines: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/redistricting-maps/ So population density is a factor, but overall it's a pretty minor one. Several seats either way, but definitely doesn't account for the majority. Wait, 13 seats is minor? Come on.
