  1. According to MLB network, 3 teams have over $3 million to spend (Rangers, Yankees, Twins) and the Pirates have about 2.2 million. MLB Network‏Verified account @MLBNetwork 41m41 minutes ago Let the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes begin! #MLBNHotStove
  2. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 10:18 AM) Korea now has guys going there from the majors and sending guys back to the majors, so their talent has seemingly increased lately, but this article tries to compare foreign leagues to the different minor league levels. Considering almost all of the latin players play in the DSL for their first year and hopefully make it to the US rookie leagues by the time they are 18, there is very little chance they would be at an appropriate talent level to play in Korea or Mexico. And even if they could play in Mexico, I don't think they would choose that alternative. This article talks about the cap on salaries for non-Mexican players to be $6500/month, or about $78,000 if they are paid for every month. Considering they would probably make more than that just from their signing bonus, they would probably just take the bonus. US players make a fraction of that unless they are on the 40 man roster.

  5. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 08:12 AM) Of those four, really only the Mariners have a regular DH that would compete for ABs. Believe me, I love to follow the NPB and I want Otani on the White Sox BADLY (I subscribe to the PL streaming service and watched all of Otani's starts this year), but this one is looking to be very, very unlikely for us. Really, no AL team has less to offer him on paper than we do. We're not currently a contender, have the least amount of money to give, exist in an underperforming media market (given the Cubs and compared to LA/NYC), and we have a guy who will likely need to compete for DH at bats going forward (Abreu). On top of that, the Sox are one of the few teams who didn't bother to send anyone to go see him pitch this year, and there have been no indications that they've contacted his agent. To me, it appears that the Sox consciously chose to put their eggs in the Luis Robert basket instead of joining the scrum for Otani, knowing that they had a much better chance of landing Robert given their ability to spend big and offer a Cuban-friendly clubhouse. Sad, but very accurate.
  6. QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 06:55 PM) I hope I didn't come off as dismissive there. I was curious if I was misunderstanding something. That being said, I don't see why these guys already having a payday would make a difference to the players as they hit the free market. Do you think their agents and/or managers care these guys already got paid a little bit (by baseball standards) a few years ago? These guys are going to get paid as much as they possibly can in more cases than not. If any one of these guys sign with the Sox it's because they are the caliber of prospect, at this moment in time, who is only worth 300K at the most. I am 100% on board with this post. The odds of us getting the top guys is about zero. Our hope is that with the competition for Ohtani and the other teams being capped out, that someone maybe slips through the cracks or that another team is willing to deal us a live prospect in order to get room to get one of these deals done, if we have any space left.
  7. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 05:49 PM) But less than in the minors, so they wouldn't be able to play in front of scouts. Its like what happens with high school basketball players who try to play overseas instead of go to college for a year. They don't get as much playing time, so they don't develop and get better, and scouts don't get to see them as much so they usually end up drafted lower than expected. Not really. Places like Mexico and Korea are very lowly rated in terms of talent. If money really is the concern they can go to a place like that, get paid probably 10 times what they would be paid in the US minors, and get to play.
  8. Joel Sherman‏Verified account @Joelsherman1 4m4 minutes ago So unless for some reason MLB owners do not ratify next Fri, Ohtani likely posted shortly after and signed before December is concluded. #LetTheBiddingBegin https://twitter.com/Joelsherman1/status/933117213598461953 Beginning next offseason Japanese clubs will get 20 percent of the value for a player who signs an MLB contract of less than $25M, 17 1-2 pct for $25M-$50M, 15 pct $50M-$100M. For $100M or more 1st $25M 20pct, next $25M 17 1-2 pct, anything above that 15 pct

  10. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 05:21 PM) There are other leagues, but the viability of 16 year olds getting playing consistent time in these leagues is probably low. Plus I am not sure how all the free agency/entering a foreign league timelines would match up. Either way, its easier to just not have it than risk it not working out. I think the owners are okay with the current system because it reduces bonuses enough. More playing time than they get in the majors for sure.

Jon Morosi‏Verified account @jonmorosi 22m22 minutes ago Source: In @MLB, @MLB_PLAYERS and NPB negotiations on new posting system, a few issues remain unresolved with less than 3 hours before the union-imposed deadline. Parties are hopeful that process can move to completion as business day opens in Japan, where it is now 7:30 am.
  12. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:49 PM) Someone fly Vizquel to wherever Maitan lives for the next 2 weeks IIRC, getting ready for winter ball in Panama.
  13. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:44 PM) Maybe because drafts in general are the worst because you don't get to pick where you want to play. Like what other job do you have literally zero say over where you want to work? Also international players would lose any leverage they have in negotiations. US players can go to college or back to school if they dont like where they are drafted or how much a team offers while international guys dont really have many other options, especially in areas where these players families need the money. They have pro-ball in other countries to fall back on as well. If they are willing to go to the US, there is nothing to stop them from going to Japan, Korea, Mexico or anywhere else with pro leagues.

  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:36 PM) Oh I agree, but the reason they stood firm ont he draft was it would reduce spending. But then they agreed to reduced spending and acted like the draft was the problem! It was weird. Add the draft caps from international to the regular draft. Problem solved.
  16. Damn, I hope it was worth it.
  17. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:31 PM) The draft would cut out a lot of shenanigans but it also hurts player wages. OTOH, the most recent CBA put such a harsh cap on it anyways I don't know why "the draft" is what the players stood firm on as opposed to the spending on the players. It is really a crappy labor practice to quite literally have different sets of rules for different nationalities. It should all be in one pool. Either draft or free agent, period.
  18. JJ Cooper‏Verified account @jjcoop36 59m59 minutes ago Nowhere in the commissioner's statement did it say that the Braves were punished for reaching agreements with players in advance of the July 2 signing deadline. Big misconception out there.
  19. QUOTE (Superstar Lamar @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:24 PM) This is my thought as well. In theory, all other teams were damaged or put at a disadvantage by the Braves actions. The solution should be for all teams to be share equally in the solution. Unless you are King Soloman, that is quite impossible.

  23. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:05 PM) The 17/18 period is our first year. Yeah we are capped with 300k signings until July 1, 2019. That is the downside of blowing the pool for Robert. No Ohtani, no more Cubans, and no more 16 year old signings of any size all for two years.
  24. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 03:19 PM) The whole international player procurement process is just gross. Baseball has a lot to think about here. It is absolutely why they should go to an international draft. The rest of the sports world does it.
