  2. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 05:21 PM) There are other leagues, but the viability of 16 year olds getting playing consistent time in these leagues is probably low. Plus I am not sure how all the free agency/entering a foreign league timelines would match up. Either way, its easier to just not have it than risk it not working out. I think the owners are okay with the current system because it reduces bonuses enough. More playing time than they get in the majors for sure.
  3. Jon Morosi‏Verified account @jonmorosi 22m22 minutes ago Source: In @MLB, @MLB_PLAYERS and NPB negotiations on new posting system, a few issues remain unresolved with less than 3 hours before the union-imposed deadline. Parties are hopeful that process can move to completion as business day opens in Japan, where it is now 7:30 am.
  4. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:49 PM) Someone fly Vizquel to wherever Maitan lives for the next 2 weeks IIRC, getting ready for winter ball in Panama.
  5. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:44 PM) Maybe because drafts in general are the worst because you don't get to pick where you want to play. Like what other job do you have literally zero say over where you want to work? Also international players would lose any leverage they have in negotiations. US players can go to college or back to school if they dont like where they are drafted or how much a team offers while international guys dont really have many other options, especially in areas where these players families need the money. They have pro-ball in other countries to fall back on as well. If they are willing to go to the US, there is nothing to stop them from going to Japan, Korea, Mexico or anywhere else with pro leagues.

  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:36 PM) Oh I agree, but the reason they stood firm ont he draft was it would reduce spending. But then they agreed to reduced spending and acted like the draft was the problem! It was weird. Add the draft caps from international to the regular draft. Problem solved.
  8. Damn, I hope it was worth it.
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:31 PM) The draft would cut out a lot of shenanigans but it also hurts player wages. OTOH, the most recent CBA put such a harsh cap on it anyways I don't know why "the draft" is what the players stood firm on as opposed to the spending on the players. It is really a crappy labor practice to quite literally have different sets of rules for different nationalities. It should all be in one pool. Either draft or free agent, period.
  10. JJ Cooper‏Verified account @jjcoop36 59m59 minutes ago Nowhere in the commissioner's statement did it say that the Braves were punished for reaching agreements with players in advance of the July 2 signing deadline. Big misconception out there.
  11. QUOTE (Superstar Lamar @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:24 PM) This is my thought as well. In theory, all other teams were damaged or put at a disadvantage by the Braves actions. The solution should be for all teams to be share equally in the solution. Unless you are King Soloman, that is quite impossible.
  12. Mark Feinsand‏Verified account @Feinsand 6h6 hours ago Source says Marlins and Giants have had "deeper discussions" on a Giancarlo Stanton deal. Believes Giants are favorites to land the NL MVP, though Cardinals may still be a factor.

  15. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:05 PM) The 17/18 period is our first year. Yeah we are capped with 300k signings until July 1, 2019. That is the downside of blowing the pool for Robert. No Ohtani, no more Cubans, and no more 16 year old signings of any size all for two years.
  16. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 03:19 PM) The whole international player procurement process is just gross. Baseball has a lot to think about here. It is absolutely why they should go to an international draft. The rest of the sports world does it.
  17. QUOTE (Quin @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 03:18 PM) Teams can use this year's signing pool or next year's. Maitan back on the dock? The Sox would still be out. Penalty phase is two years. We are now serving year 1.
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 03:18 PM) The player does get a major league salary for the full-year (which might compensate for the lost development / ab's). Not sure which is ultimately more valuable to the individual. They also get locked into the retirement plan and health insurance I believe.
  19. Jim Callis‏Verified account @jimcallisMLB 1h1 hour ago When I ranked baseball's top farm systems for @MLBNetwork for use during our last two @MLBazFallLeague broadcasts, I had the @Braves at No. 1. With Atlanta losing Kevin Maitan & Co., I would drop them to No. 2 behind the @whitesox.
  20. Joel Sherman‏Verified account @Joelsherman1 12m12 minutes ago Agreement on new MLB-NPB posting system down to few items, but not done and those involved still saying if not finalized today it won’t get done this offseason #Ohtani
  21. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 02:47 PM) Great spot to be. Would be amazing if add Maitan (who some wanted as a center-piece in a Q deal) or any of these kids that just got removed today. While obviously the big prize is Maitan, the catcher Abrahan Gutierrez might be as big of a prize, if the hints about Maitans status dropping are true.
  22. QUOTE (G&T @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 02:43 PM) So that is truly the WH line. If the accused denies (AND THEY ARE IN MY PARTY), then it didn't happen. Protecting the status quo, which is all Trump has to protect himself. This is most accurate and pretty applicable across the board.
  23. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 02:39 PM) Question is, which team gets busted next? I doubt them and the Red Sox are the only ones cheating in one way or another when it comes to these signings/agreements. What stood out so far in the reporting was how brazen the Braves were. Sounds like they barely tried to hide it, and almost flaunted the rules.
  24. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 02:30 PM) Braves definitely came out in better shape than us. Just funny given how much serious/extensive it seems this offense was and yet we ultimately paid a bigger price. Obviouslg happy with the punishment here regardless. This type of behavior can not be tolerated or it will continue to foster. To be fair, one set of actions was criminal. The other was against baseball's rules.
