President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 10:56 AM) Russia needs us. It needs our goods and our money. Because of their isolation, Cuba and NK don't rely on the US, and as such, have much less to lose. That makes them more dangerous. This is basic man. Come on. No one is more dangerous than Russia. I would have thought that was obvious, but hey, what do I know. Its not like Russia just invaded and conquered a neighbor or anything, right?

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 10:47 AM) I too remember when NK and Cuba hacked our elections and the left looked the other away. Also, please show your work as to how the left is "publicly pushing us towards war" with Russia. I mean, I'm honestly all for improving relations with Russia. But it seems to me that the extent to which the sitting President and/or his campaign collaborated with Russian efforts to influence the Presidential election is a pretty important thing to investigate! We keep getting told that we can't do anything about these other countries because of how dangerous they are, and the risk of war and millions of dead people. But when it comes to a country that has actually invaded neighbors, and has the second biggest nuclear arms set in the world, they have no problem antagonizing them for nothing more than political points. The risk here is so huge, infinitely bigger than taking action on NK. They are backing themselves into a corner where the only answer is going to be war with Russia, but the left doesn't care because Trump.

Nationals acquire Doolittle/Madson from As
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 10:29 AM) I don't see the Sox getting all that much for the above players, outside of Quintana/Robertson. Melky and Frazier just do not have much value, with the slight edge going to Frazier in value. Pelfrey/Holland/Gonzalez are pretty much worthless via trade Swarzak might get you a piece like Duke did last year, or be a throw in as a part of a larger deal. All this means is that it will be harder, not easier to make other deals.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 10:30 AM) Ok. But just because corruption may sometimes go uncaught doesn't mean we let a congressman go who has a million dollars in his freezer. Especially when this specific act has potential to continuously undermine the legitimacy of our elections. Trump could have legitimately owned the Russian issue by doing something responsible and actually pursuing action against Russia for the attacks on US elections. Other world leaders in similar spots have created legitimacy in heel turning against what was supposedly helping them. But Trump team didn't do that, they've lied about it repeatedly and sometimes illegally, they've denied it, and they fired the head of the investigation into it as well as floated out firing the independent council. Again, after hearing the lefts positions on places like NK and Cuba, it amazes me to see them take the exact opposite tact with Russia, and publicly pushing us towards war with the absolute most dangerous country on earth.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 10:15 AM) But Russia helped by performing a cyber attack on an american political party and some aim around voter registrations, not helping with a foreign policy achievement. In general, I think it's a pretty good norm to not openly accept foreign attacks on your domestic political opponents. Somehow I pretty well doubt that this was the first time, nor the last.

Nationals acquire Doolittle/Madson from As
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 09:58 AM) Yeah, I'm starting to lean that way too. It's especially hard when you're dealing multiple assets of the same type, as Hahn will be doing with Robertson & Swarzak definitely being shopped. I think Hahn will listen to offers, but would ultimately have to be overwhelmed to move him. There is logic in letting him be the closer for two months and believing his value may skyrocket in the offseason if successful. At a minimum the White Sox are looking to trade Melky Frazier Swarzak Pelfrey Holland Gonzalez We also know that the rest of MLB really wants Q and Robertson at the very least. Teams have also asked about Abreu for sure. That is nine different players right there.

7/10 Games
QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 09:50 AM) Is he considered a prospect in the slightest? Amazing arm behind the dish, solid defense, and now a power bat that's increasing contact, almost 24 but probably our 3rd best C prospect behind Collins and Skoug now With this season, and the rarity of good catching, he has to have a ton of value right now. Age isn't nearly as big of a deal when it comes to catching prospects.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 09:47 AM) Will definitely be Kahnle with Jones out for the foreseeable future. But if they were to deal Kahnle too, god only knows who the next man up would be. With all of the other trades the White Sox have to be making before this deadline, I just can't see them being able to put together a deal that accurately reflects the value of Kahnle from their point of view.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 09:32 AM) I've seen a lot of comments about how terrible this is, but is there an actual criminal statute that's cited somewhere? Is there something we're basing the criminal aspect on? Especially since we know Gary Hart was negotiating nuclear arms with the Soviets in the 80's as a Presidential candidate, and nothing came of it.

QUOTE (FT35 @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 09:12 AM) Something else to think about is the perception the league has of Hahn. In the same way we know of everyone else's needs they are looking to acquire, everyone knows of the players that we "need" to move and will be looking to exploit that by getting them cheap...as they should. I almost look at this and think that with the stakes being low on the season, guys like Frazier or Melky--choosing NOT to trade a guy away for nothing can send a more effective message to the GM's than being willing to heavily discount someone. You want Frazier or Melky for your stretch run, all you have to do is offer something of value or we will keep him--which really only hurts YOU because you've determined him to be an upgrade over what you have and we weren't going to get anything of much value anyway. So we eat one bad contract and miss out on a junk prospect...the message will be more clear to teams in the future--"Hey...when they say they'll just keep someone, they aren't bluffing." We might get more from future trades because of a move we DON'T make. It absolutely depends on what is out there. If a deal is a 2/3 instead of a 1/2, you might not be missing that much depending on who it is. You can also get a pretty nice deal done with depth in a few of these systems. Maybe instead of a top guy, a second guy and another piece, you put together a second guy, and 4 other B rated guys. For a system that lacks depth, especially at the upper levels, that might actually be a better fit for the White Sox. The Yankees, and I believe the Astros have pretty serious roster crunches staring them in the face very soon. All of the teams that go crazy in Latin American eventually face this if their talent amounts to anything. Eventually guys have to be 40 maned or lost. Realistically I think that Quintana is a need and a nearly ideal fit for 29 other teams. He is lefty, he is young, he is really good, he is cheap, and he is under control until next decade. Eventually I think desperation will set in somewhere, and the bids will come up.

Todd and Melky
QUOTE (FT35 @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 07:43 PM) Kinda funny...I live in Fort Wayne and Tatis plays here for the TinCaps. They played an afternoon game today at home and the highlight on the 5:00 local news was Tatis drilling a triple off the right center field wall--right off the sponsored billboard that I designed for the small business I work for here in the Fort. I took it as a personal attack reminder of how good he is and how bad that trade was! He does look real good, but then again, Rymer Liriano was the last "greatest thing" to hit here...and well...you know him... QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Jul 11, 2017 -> 07:58 AM) I'm in Ft Wayne as well and I know what you mean. Well, sorta. He's not launched any personal attacks on me, but it's not been fun seeing what could have been a solid Sox prospect playing in my backyard everyday. Especially when I've been watching the guy he got traded for implode every 5 days. I'm sorry...

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 08:55 PM) How was the special? Forgot about it... I thought it was compelling at the very least. The one thing that bothers me about History Channel anymore is they make those shows so one sided now. I would have liked to have had it compared to an opposing view point. At the very least I thought the evidence was pretty impressive.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 04:54 PM) It's like spring training IMO. Good play doesn't always translate to the regular season, but bad play is a concern. Cameron Payne has been terrible. Even the beat guys are commenting on it. I'm not sure what the hell the Bulls see in him other than a ticket to the high lottery pick. lol, no. Posting people's shooting stats from the first two summer league games is 100% a waste of time.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 03:51 PM) I dunno...I saw the same type of posts about Meadows. If we had accepted a Meadows-headlined deal, I think people would be freaking out about him right now. I'd definitely like an elite headliner, but if it was backed by enough high quality depth I would be willing to entertain a deal without any one particular guy. Problem is, there aren't a whole lot of teams with that kind of system...maybe the Yankees, Braves, and Astros. Sure. And it would be even worse if he had centered a deal around Newman and Glasnow.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 01:18 PM) Burdi's throwing today to test it out. It's fair to fear the worst but they're not sure of anything at this point. If they are letting him throw a day later, I can't imagine they think the worst.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 01:04 PM) A depth deal could likely be trumped by another suitor at the deadline, I think the Sox would not be inclined to accept something like that when they do not have to. If that happened great. But from what all reports seem to be, something like this would be by far the best offer out there.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 12:43 PM) Quality over quantity for me. This is a list I found on a Yankees message board of players that need to be added to their 40 or go to Rule 5 this year. But we aren't getting either right now. Take something like Frazier, Fowler, Sheffield, Wade, Andujar, and Garcia if you aren't going to get Torres, Frazier, +?

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 10, 2017 -> 12:30 PM) If I'm Brian Cashman, I look at my organization and consider the following factors when deciding how to proceed this trade deadline: 1) Currently has a wild card spot and within striking distance of the division lead (3.5 games behind BOS) 2) Significant immediate & long-term need for a TOR starter (preferably cost controlled) 3) Crazy 40 man roster crunch that will result multiple players being taken in next year's rule 5 draft 4) Tons of OF depth throughout the organization and four regular caliber players already on major league roster 5) Epic free agent class coming up in two offseasons with multiple star OFs & 3Bs 6) Real luxury tax concerns that must be considered when making moves between now and 2018/19 free agent class So when considering the factors above, Jose Quintana is the guy I'm targeting at this deadline. He meets short-term & long-term needs by giving the Yankees a cost-controlled veteran TOR starter to anchor their rotation for the next 3 1/2 years and mentor their young arms. He'll only count about $6M or so against the luxury cap, which doesn't impact their ability to be major players in the epic 2018/19 free agent class. And he allows them to spend their money on positional players rather than risking big bucks on a starter. I would also no doubt be willing to part with Clint Frazier in a Quintana deal. Judge has a spot locked up for the foreseeable future. Hicks is controllable for two more years and has been amazing. Gardner is still very solid and signed through next season. Ellsbury provides depth as well. And then you have quality prospects in Fowler, Rutherford, & Florial waiting in the wings. Given the upcoming roster crunch, it would be poor asset utilization to keep both Frazier & Fowler and they obviously can't move Dustin at the moment. So again, assuming I'm Cashman, I'd probably be willing to give up a package of Frazier, Adams, Andujar, & Abreu for Quintana & Swarzak. All four guys are expendable, it clears three 40 man roster spots for next year, fill two important needs right now, and provides my team with a quality veteran starter to anchor the rotation from 2018 to 2020. As long as Torres is off the table and the ask isn't both Frazier & Rutherford, I don't see anything holding up a deal from the Yankees perspective. This could be very interesting. If the Sox were willing to back off of the two top guys, and take say 1 top guy plus 4-5 B guys instead, is the deal still worth it?
