  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 09:06 AM) The "x wasn't on the table" stuff requires skepticism. The other reporting is that the sox were adamant on one of their ML players (likely Bradley) as part of the deal and they never really progressed. For many like me, ML-proven talent is not necessary to the deal, as I'd prefer we get "near the bigs" prospect stars like Benintendi/Moncada. Heck, Benintendi then did pretty well in his two months and may be as hard to get as a Bradley. What you gain in assurance that you are getting at least one solid piece back, you lose in possible quantity. Not everyone sox could receive in a package may make bigs. But having more prospects in system still provide ammo to supplement young stars with proven talent. The impression I remember is that they wanted Bradley AND their top prospects. That is why the talks never got off of the ground.
  2. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 09:06 AM) That late save by Darling was epic. Big difference between getting 4 points vs. 1 for Dallas, instead of 3 vs. 2 over the weekend. Now that should be one of the saves of the year.
  3. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 09:03 AM) GOTV operations are fundamentally different for Dems vs GOP. Dems are usually in dense urban areas, Republicans are in suburban and rural areas as a rule of thumb, so Dems do these things in shifts and try to get as many people to vote before the actual election day. Not as much of a factor with Republicans, they're not out canvassing neighborhoods for several hours at a time, it wouldn't really be a productive use of their time. I'm oversimplifying but I think that's the gist. Being in an extremist Democratic town and county (we literally haven't had a Republican elected to a local office since before the Bears won a Super Bowl) I am truly familiar with their operations. Heck, they pull vans up to all of the nursing homes, bus people from the factories (well the ones that are left) and anything else they can do for a vote. But we still have horrible turn out numbers. Really the numbers aren't much better for the state or the nation.
  4. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 6, 2016 -> 09:25 PM) Gotta hope that Motte injury isn't serious. He's probably been the most impressive rookie out of all of them this season. True. He has been a great asset on the kill, and would suck to lose him with that unit finally gelling.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 08:52 AM) I think if we get past the politics around early vote, I think the 2 weeks prior to ED plus regular ED (for the sentimentalist) should work well. This is the first time where it's hard for me, having a newborn. We voted on Saturday to make sure it wasn't a struggle to wake up and get moving in the morning on Tuesday. We have something like a month of early voting in Indiana. It hasn't helped turnout at all. Turnout revolves around the candidates.
  6. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 08:45 AM) In a market as depressed as this one, I don't think they need to hold out for an 'overpay.' They just need to not settle for an 'underpay.' What they need, my friends, is a 'pay.' Missing on this deal could literally cost the team a decade. Yes, they need an overpay. They need a grand slam home run of a deal.
  7. QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 08:43 AM) Well that's a point I've been making. I don't trust our FO moving in any direction. We've tried to rebuild and get younger but we suck at drafting players and trading for young ones. Maybe if we did a better job identifying pieces that fit and would work we'd be okay. We've blown way to many draft picks. First round picks since 2005 Lance Broadway Kyle McCulloch Aaron Poreda Gordan Beckham Jared Mitchell Josh Phegley Chris Sale Keenyn Walker Courtney Hawkins Keon Barnum Tim Anderson Carlos Rodon Carson Fulmer A few years prior Gio Gonzalez Tyler Lumsden Josh Fields Brian Anderson Royce Ring Kris Honel Folks this is why we suck. We hit on one, maybe 2 pitchers so far and Gio brought value in a trade. We screwed up with all but one position player thus far and he may just be mediocre. If your FO can't draft or find solid players to trade and sign into the organization you are screwed whether you rebuild or retool. Walker and Barnum were not first round picks FWIW.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2016 -> 08:30 PM) Because you replied about how bad the path I advocate is without stating a path you'd find to be better. I think that's a fair thing to ask for in reply. Ah, so you can tell me my theory is wrong. Got it now. I am not saying a rebuild can't work. I am just saying that the historic odds aren't nearly as high as they are being portrayed here. We could just as easily see it blow up in our faces, just like we have seen in Minnesota with their rebuild. They are starting over again.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2016 -> 07:58 PM) You still haven't answered the question? Does this mean you're up for another go-round of free agent signings? Why? It isn't like my opinion matters. What are you trying to pin me on now?
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2016 -> 07:38 PM) So what other option do you see? You haven't rejected the statement/lesson of the last 2 seasons - that this team has no where near the talent that the other teams in this division have and are in 4th place for a reason - so where do they go next offseason when Frazier, Cabrera hit FA and they've stumbled into a 3rd/4th place finish again? It is just as easy to say that you haven't gotten the lesson of decades of failure by other mid market teams trying rebuilding.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2016 -> 07:03 PM) 1. This team is no where near competing as it is. They were 15 fWAR behind the Indians this season and even farther behind the Cubs. If we're looking at $7-$8 million per fWAR, then we're talking about needing to spend $100 million to catch up. If they landed Cespedes, Wieters, Fowler, and traded for a reliable starter, they still wouldn't be the favorites in this division. 2. You're right, rebuilding is no surefire way to be good either. This management staff sucks at multiple things. But, if like me you've seen them finish in 4th place and 4th place despite their best efforts the last 2 years, you say that this team is not going to win this season without a miracle, especially given that it's the worst FA market in recent memory. Therefore - comparing a path that isn't a sure way to compete but has some chance of competing with a path that requires a miracle to compete, I pick the one that at least has some chance. I'd still contend that this team would need a miracle to pull of a successful rebuild on the first try with its lack of resources to carry it through the process. When you look at how many times it took teams like KC, Pittburgh, and company to do it, I don't see the excitement for rebuilding that others do.
  12. So I am about 98% for sure that my 2004 Impala that I drove off of the lot new back in Jan 2004 is toast. I think the transmission is shot. It won't even shift in to a gear now, and it revs the engine like it is trying to go, but it won't grab a gear. Anyways, I am doing a quick look for a replacement. There is a dealership in town that specializes in cars coming off of leases with slightly high miles. I have a lead on a 2015 Jetta SE. The guy let me take it home for the weekend Saturday morning for a test drive. It has 36k miles on it, but he is asking only 12,900 for it. That blows away the prices I have seen anywhere else like on carmax or any of the local dealerships by a couple of thousand dollars for a similar mileage/option situation. After driving it around a bit, I really like it. I had a Mailbu for a rental a couple of months ago after my Impala was sideswiped by an old man, and it was OK. The Jetta blows it away IMO. I am curious if anyone else out there has experience with the line. I know they are cheap because of the Diesel scandal, but this is an automatic gasoline engine with the 2.0L engine in it. Thoughts?
  13. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 5, 2016 -> 06:30 PM) No, they didn't have to, it's normally black. One of my favorite moments from the last week was a news radio station interviewing someone who literally said, "I have never seen the Chicago River blue before."
  14. QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Nov 6, 2016 -> 03:29 AM) Sale and Rodon for Mike Trout With Sale's contract vs Trout, that is a severe overpay by the Sox.
  15. QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Nov 6, 2016 -> 09:17 AM) He's also a businessman with an estimated net worth of $1.35B. The money is there to spend, it's just a matter of whether he's willing to spend it. Pretty much his entire networth it tied up in the team.
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 5, 2016 -> 08:03 PM) I missed yesterday's game, this one was painful. I quit watching when the Hawks came on.
  17. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 5, 2016 -> 06:18 PM) A tale of two weeks. The movement off ball has stopped. The transition points aren't coming as freely. Yeah, now all of the sudden it looks like these guys just started playing together. So many passes off of each others hands.
  18. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 5, 2016 -> 06:26 AM) Doing daddy proud. Ooh, he tried to turtle and instead moved right into a shot. Ouch.
  19. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 4, 2016 -> 12:10 PM) Seriously dude. Plenty of room left on Sons of Ivy and other Cubs message boards. At this point he is trying to get complements out of a Hillary convention about Trumps positions on women's rights.
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 4, 2016 -> 11:05 AM) I seriously struggle with the rationale for coming into a die hard Sox site to post things that put the Cubs up on a pedestal. Are you expecting everyone to rally around you and admit that we all secretly love the Cubs too and are equally jazzed to be a part of this moment? Seriously. You are in the wrong place if you are expecting a Come to Jesus moment from Sox fans on Soxtalk when it comes to the Cubs. In fact, crap like that only fans the flames more.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 4, 2016 -> 10:46 AM) We're not allowed to complain or be annoyed on a message board? Give me a break. It's not like we're here sharing stories about getting in Cubs fan's faces and being dicks about it. This. And I am getting sick of people feeling like they need to rub our noses in it, for no good reason.
  22. QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 4, 2016 -> 10:23 AM) Careful, your bias is showing. Yes. One of the greatest games and moments and series' in the history of sports. That is not going too far. f*** yes it is bias. You are on a damned White Sox message board. What do you expect? This is supposed to be the one place where we don't get subjected to the fellatio of the Cubs that is pervasive in the rest of the world right now. This is the crap that makes me hate all things Cubs. No, I don't have to like it, or even enjoy it. Get out of here with this BS. There are plenty of Cub fans who would love a White Sox fan to tell them how great they are now, go lecture them.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 4, 2016 -> 08:31 AM) He's covering for a lot of the mistakes the new D men are making. Totally agree. They are learning, but it was totally to be expected with all of the newbies.
  24. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 4, 2016 -> 08:48 AM) How could you forget that the Ghostbusters used a NES Advantage to control the Statue of Liberty. For shame Oh god, why are you bringing back the memories of that movie?
  25. QUOTE (farmteam @ Nov 3, 2016 -> 11:33 PM) It really is. He's not at a Jagr level (really no one is), but for him to still be productive is real impressive. Crow standing on his head recently. Crawford has been the MVP for the first month of the season, without a doubt.
