Crain's Business Story on Attendence...
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 07:24 AM) Can we dispel with this ridiculous and nonsensical myth already? The Chicago White Sox do NOT operate with "limited resources". Once and for all, understand that the sweetheart lease deal the team suckered the state into giving them over 25 years ago GUARANTEED them just the opposite. Taxpayer funds subsidize a very healthy profit margin for the ownership. That was the whole point of the sad debacle of Reinsdorf threatening to move the team to Florida, to put in place this deal to guarantee very little on the expense side of the ledger with a minuscule requirement for rent, while handing over to the team ALL of the revenue streams the ballpark has to offer. You add that the waterfall of revenue that comes through with the recent MLB TV deals, and the LAST thing anyone can conclude is that this ball club operates with "limited resources". It's beyond preposterous to even remotely suggest so. Good lord. You could at least pretend to deal in reality. Of course this team has limited resources. You are just letting your bitterness taint your reality. The reality is that the Sox are a middle of baseball revenue team, with a less than middle of baseball fanbase. Your perception of their lease doesn't change the reality of what the impact of that lease is to the bottom line. A team like the Yankees quite literally has over double the revenue stream that the White Sox has. If you don't understand what the biggest teams in baseball make as compared to the White Sox, you might want to look up what the words "limited" and "resources" actually mean.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 29, 2016 -> 09:03 AM) Rick Hahn paying James Shields $27 million for 2 1/2 seasons...total dope AJ Preller pays James Shields $46 million for 1 1/2 seasons and trades him for Eric Johnson and a 17 year old Rick Hahn signed....crafty GM. Why didn't Preller just sign Tatis in the first place ? Tatis cost $600,000. It would have been much cheaper to just sign him.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 10:27 PM) Once again, Southsider, you are wrong. Argumentative, as usual, but still wrong. You talk about Anderson, implying how astute Hahn was not to trade Tim Anderson? Give me a break. Preller's negotiating ploy was to drop Anderson's name, knowing it will be quickly refused. Then he goes down the food chain and comes up with Tatis, and Hahn started rubbing Preller's leg. Shields is not dirt cheap. Nice metaphor. No one else was trying to trade for the innings eater. At any price. And you think because Tatis was not in Sox Top 30 list, he is automatically expendable for Shields? Using your words, Let's be honest. He is 17, just signed 2-4 months ago, and never played stateside at time of this horrible trade. How could he possibly be in Top 30? Preller is chirping in San Diego It must have been great to be sitting in the negotiations. Either that or you are full of s*** and making stuff up.

QUOTE (FT35 @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 03:58 PM) Just me if not anyone I missed...maybe the Padres interest centered solely around Tatis...who knows. But the trade was a textbook salary dump--summarized by the GM's PUBLIC comments about Shields after his last start. They wanted him on the NEXT train out of town and so while it was a GREAT time to buy, we came to him with $27 Million a young, LH MLB-ready starter, AND Tatis. The guys who called this move out were claiming the inclusion of Tatis to be unnecessary because the salary DUMP was already achieved without trading him away. The original trade talk I saw centered around the Sox being asked for Tim Anderson. Now I am not going to claim to know how the discussion went, nor will I claim to know what other teams were willing to offer, but $10 million a year for what Shields can do on the mound is dirt cheap. Compare that to what other free agent starters got this off season. When people claim that the inclusion of Tatis was "unnecessary", seem to have some sort of difinitive proof of both what other offers were on the table, and what else that San Diego had been asking for to make the conclusion that Tatis was not needed to get a deal done. Finally let's be honest. Tatis was a guy who wasn't in the Top 30 coming out of Latin America, and he wasn't in the White Sox top 30 prospects in a system that at best has been top heavy with quick movers, in a system that lacks depth. Tatis wasn't even the Sox top signing in the season coming out of Latin America. Tatis is somewhere around a half of a decade, at best, away from having a chance at being a major league baseball player. If you have to give up a guy with those credentials to get a major league starting pitcher, I think most teams make that deal. So while Tatis's value has gone up with Sox fans simply because he got traded, let's not exaggerate who we gave up either. He is a long term lottery ticket, who has a lot of value in his family name.

QUOTE (FT35 @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 03:38 PM) I do see what he's saying. It's not that he was a big Tatis fan, it's the logic behind his inclusion in a deal where SD was clearly just looking to dump Shields. It's something we have done in the past--dump that extra low A prospect as a "throw in." But why lose a prospect when you're doing SD a favor just by agreeing to take and PAY Shields? Not saying that Tatis could be the next well...Tatis...but the Cardinals DID keep Albert Pujols in the minors because Fernando Tatis SR was manning 3rd base at an All-Star level at that time. This kid is what...17 years old? So no we're not claiming that we just traded the farm away, but just saying... Where has it been said that Tatis was a "throw in"?

2016-2017 NFL Thread
QUOTE (Deadpool @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 02:23 PM) Thinking Hub Arkush cries every time he says something positive about the Bears is fanboyism. Agreeing with radio hosts that the 85 Bears are old news and the excessive celebration of that team is a product of a terrible organization is just common sense. Dan Bernstein isn't particularly intelligent, but he's on the money on this. A key guy from a super bowl team died. Of course they are going to talk about the 85 Bears. To think they wouldn't is stupid. Thought it is particularly funny that by ranting about talking about that team, he is spending time talking about that team. Nice principles there DB.

I know people like to talk about the McDowell, Ventura, Thomas, Alvarez stretch of #1 draft picks, but with Tim Anderson in the majors we have 3 #1 picks in the majors from a four year stretch. (Sale, Hawkins, Anderson, Rodon) with Fulmer and Burdi looming in the next year or so. Sale and Anderson have made the majors from the 13th and 17th picks respectively, when compared to that earlier stretch, none of those guys was picked worse than #10.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jun 27, 2016 -> 12:08 PM) Legitimate talent. But they knew he wouldn't sign. The did the same thing with Hickman last year. They knew he wasn't going to sign. But they laid the ground work, and got a deal done this year.

Zack Collins agrees to deal with White Sox
QUOTE (gosoxgo2005 @ Jun 27, 2016 -> 12:06 PM) Why do we NEED to stop talking about Collins in any sort of present time frame? Because there is basically zero chance of his being a contributor before 2018, at the absolute least.

Zack Collins agrees to deal with White Sox
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 27, 2016 -> 10:40 AM) Also, expecting Collins before 2018 is extremely optimistic if we try to keep him at catcher. People need to stop talking about Collins in any sort of present time frame. Realistically you have to hope for 2 years, and be perfectly fine with 3.

Tim Anderson
QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 27, 2016 -> 09:56 AM) I've seen him layoff some pretty wicked breaking stuff. He was completely fooled by the knuckleball last week, however. It's more that if he's getting a fastball in the zone, he's swinging at it. He has been prone to high fastballs though. he has a bat that can take a few of em but hopefully that's one he can learn to layoff of. With the way he swings, he will always have problems with the letter high fastball and above.

Tim Anderson
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jun 27, 2016 -> 09:36 AM) I'm quite impressed with what I've seen so far. His defense has been great, which is what was expected. Aside from his lack of patience (which will hopefully improve as he sees more ML pitching), his offense is better than what I expected. He has more power than I thought, and he's fast when he gets on base. I like him hitting lead-off even though he hasn't walked yet. Having him and Eaton at the top of the lineup has been exciting. If he can start taking some walks, they'll be a very dangerous duo setting the table for the power. I know it isn't saber correct to have Anderson up there, but the offense is averaging 5.07 runs per game since he moved into the lead off spot. You have to ride that, at least under Anderson slumps.
-
Tim Anderson
Based on what Anderson has done so far, I don't see how you can't give him a B at the very least. The defense has been top notch. I am not sure Saladino has as much range, and his arm has been impressive too. The bat has been about what I expected, though I expected more ugly ABs to start with. Granted the one big thing you can hold against him is his patience, but with as close as he stands to the plate, he has really impressive plate coverage off of the outside corner, so he is hitting lots of those pitches he chases out of the zone. I know he will have his slumps with that long of a swing, but I give Anderson an A to this point for sure.

Brexit
It is really too bad that the big picture is getting missed here. Both with Trump and Brexit, there are a lot of people fed up with the system and the way things are going in their respective countries. They feel like they don't have a voice, and with 21st century politics having turned into it being more important to mock your opponents than to actually learn something from them, these are the ways that people see they can even the score and stick it to the man. It would be nice if we could look at things in gray's anymore instead of black and white. Fixing a flawed system doesn't have to be a victory or a loss. But when the alternatives that get set up are extremes of one side or the other, people can't be surprised when the flow is to the opposite extreme of what we have been doing. Brexit should scare the crap out of anyone here in the United States because that same undercurrent of anger, resentment, and frustration exists right here in the US, and has already given us Donald Trump. More important than what the guy actually stands for is why people are actually gravitating towards people like him, and even Bernie Sanders to a large extent. Hopefully people starting paying attention the "why" before it is too late here.

The Second Wildcard
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jun 24, 2016 -> 12:31 PM) Great comeback! We learned a whole bunch from it. You're on a hot streak! So now explain to us how it is you think the team will improve "tons" if Shields merely pitches "mediocre". One would think he'd have to return to the form of "Big Game James" and become a front line starter/ace type for the team to improve "tons". Just being mediocre doesn't seem like it would move the needle much, but I could be wrong. Let us in on how you reached your conclusion. Thanks!! Ah Yes my biggest fan. I am not going to waste a whole of time explaining the obvious to someone who is looking to turn everything into a worst case scenario. If you can't see what improvement an average pitcher does at the back of this rotation, what exactly am I going to say to change your mind? Go back to ranting about the last 35 years.
