Early Trade Speculation
QUOTE (GreenSox @ May 9, 2016 -> 07:25 AM) If the Sox are world series contenders for the next 3-5 years, it certainly won't be with THIS team. The Sox lose 2 catchers, 2 starters, the SS and CF after this year. How do you propose to fill those holes by jettisoning young players for one 32 year old? Sure the Sox can sign some of them back, sure maybe another C or CF may be available on a 1 year deal for 2017...but maybe not. And all of these guys are old. And then look at 2018, when we lose our LF, 2b and 3b. And let's talk 32. How confident are you that someone who is now 32 and having a bad year, will produce to elite levels in 3-5 years? Make no mistake....all of this drooling over Reds and Brewers players can only help, if it does help, THIS year. And it will HURT the chances to win in the next 2-5 years. As for trading young pitchers, the Sox have drafted heavily in pitching and as of now have 3 dependable starters in their prime and ZERO in AAA. It certainly is true that the odds of any individual minor league pitcher making the majors as a solid starter is small. But some of these guys WILL become starters and you need to leave them alone and let them develop. And then, look at the track record of the "stars" the Sox trade for. Look at Carlos Gomez, everyone's favorite Brewer, with Houston. YOu want to see an epic exit and meltdown of Sox fans? Let them be in contention this year, but not get to the playoffs while not adding any players at the deadline this year, after having LaRoche leave them an extra $13 million. In other words, there is no chance the White Sox aren't adding veteran players this year. Zero. None. It will happen.

Cleveland outdrew us? Attendance down 13% so far
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 9, 2016 -> 05:03 AM) I feel the need to point out that the Cubs are the oldest active team in professional sports, were founded here, have never left the city and were the original Chicago White Stockings. They eventually became the Orphans, Colts and eventually the Cubs. The St. Paul Saints moved to the Southside and took up the old name due to its install base, then shortened it to Sox. Absolutely right. The Cubs were established in 1876. The Saints moved here in the winter of 1900, and became the White Sox for the inaugural American League 1901 season.

Early Trade Speculation
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ May 8, 2016 -> 10:37 AM) Nonsense. You always underestimate the Sox' financial capabilities. They could easily make it work, the very way they were willing to make it work when they pursued A-Rod before he signed with Texas, and when they tried to acquire Miguel Cabrera when he was Trout's age. Just because they don't flex their financial might as often as they should (see failure to sign Cespedes) doesn't mean that might doesn't exist. Who do you think the Angels will want for Mike Trout, and how do the White Sox replace them? Also realize that Mike Trouts salary in a couple of years is over $30 million per season. That is 25% of our payroll to one player.

2016 Republican Thread
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ May 8, 2016 -> 10:34 AM) Serious question now that Trump is the nominee. Who are you fellow Republicans planning to support in the GE? Are you writing in candidates? Gary Johnson.

Commish to be on Sox broadcast tonight.
QUOTE (Tex @ May 6, 2016 -> 03:51 PM) I'm wondering if all the owners are in agreement. A few won't, but that will be the frew teams with cash to burn. For everyone else, cheaper talent is going to trump. It is why we have the draft and six years of player ownership before free agency.

Early Trade Speculation
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ May 7, 2016 -> 01:18 PM) Happened across this article earlier, but for a team like the Sox who are looking to add offense, why not think big and consider the mighty MIKE TROUT who, if this article is correct, could be made available given the current state of the Angels. And as I read this article and saw the potential trade partners the author notes and the kinds of prospects who would need to be in play to entice the Angels to part with Trout, I'm not too sure the Sox couldn't have a seat at that table in any negotiations given the elite talent they currently possess on the farm. A huge long shot, of course, but such an acquisition would not only catapult the Sox' chances for success in the near and perhaps distant future, but it could also go a long ways towards changing the narrative on the Chicago baseball landscape to firmly remind everyone that there are two teams in the city. http://scores.espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/p...ding-mike-trout You'd destroy the rest of the roster and handicap your payroll to get him.

Johnson Back Down
QUOTE (lostfan @ May 6, 2016 -> 11:53 AM) It wasn't really "just one start," Johnson was a semi-known quantity already, but he didn't show us anything to give reason to believe he would be more than an emergency fifth starter. There's a couple of other things the Sox should try first before settling on Johnson. He was a compete train wreck during his stretch here in 2014, and took months to recover from it in the minors. His 2015 numbers look nice with that 3.34 era, but the dude had a 5.93 fip.

Johnson Back Down
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 6, 2016 -> 11:45 AM) I thought i remembered reading that if Turner comes up, he is either here to stay or will have to be DFA if they dont like what he gives them, they cant just send him back down. Is that correct? I believe he is out of options, and would have to clear waivers.

Rodon vs Nola
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ May 6, 2016 -> 08:18 AM) The only thing that could hold Rodon back is his command. His 'stuff' has every chance to be as good as Sale's. He also has a better frame that should allow him to be a complete workhorse. Exactly. This kid was projected to be the #1 pick for two years, before finally slipping to #3. His stuff is as good as it gets. He loses his release point from time to time, which kills him. It was his problem last year when he struggled, and found a fix with Cooper. He still loses it from time to time this year.

Commish to be on Sox broadcast tonight.
QUOTE (Tex @ May 6, 2016 -> 10:01 AM) I wonder what the behind the scenes politics is regarding international players. There has to be factions lining up. To me it seems like something easy for the players union to concede on, and trade for something else in negotiations. None of those kids are union members, and won't be for the better part of a decade, if ever.

Is Avi Putting It Together?
The whole key for Garcia is to take some pitches. He has the tools and ability if he works into hitters counts, and gets good pitches to hit. When he is laying off of ball one and ball two, he gets much better stuff to hit. Early this year pitchers would just throw garbage up there, he'd swing, and he'd be down 0-1, 0-2, in no time. It is not a coincidence that things have improves as he is taking more pitches. I don't know who finally got between his ears, but hopefully it sticks.

Johnson Back Down
QUOTE (raBBit @ May 6, 2016 -> 11:02 AM) Well if that was your point, your post didn't do a very good job of conveying it. You never even mentioned the bullpen or EJ hanging in there. Seemed to me like you were painting the whole board with one of your usual sweeping generalization with some hypothetical situation you could never be called on because it's outside the realm of reality.

Johnson Back Down
QUOTE (South Sider @ May 6, 2016 -> 10:14 AM) I know he luckily escaped a few jams but lost in all of this is that he did give the team a chance to win that game. For a 5th starter in the AL, that's really all I can ask for. If the Sox had converted on their several opportunities perhaps we'd have seen a different outcome. In a tie game or Sox lead, you don't see Jennings throwing 40+ pitches. Nonetheless, he's back to Charlotte so there must have either been something the Sox didn't like, or a strategic reason for the move. I guess we will see. The Jackson drop didn't help him, but he did get hard last night. It was very similar to the Gonzalez start to be honest.

Johnson Back Down
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 6, 2016 -> 08:55 AM) I dont really think they have jerked him around too much. The guy has been up multiple times, and has had stinkers like this pretty much every time. You can see it in his body language when things start going wrong too, he starts to nibble and is forced to bring his bp fastball to the zone when the count is in the batters favor. I know he has bounced up and down a few times, and apparently felt that he should have stayed with the big league club out of spring training, but I think he really has gotten opportunities to show he can take this job and has peed down his leg every time. The only time i can recall a solid start from the guy was (i believe) a september start where there was zero pressure on him to perform I think I remember a certain poster saying at one time, if he can't handle stuff like this, he isn't going to make it as a major league pitcher.

Early Trade Speculation
QUOTE (GreenSox @ May 5, 2016 -> 10:57 PM) And the answer is Trayce Thompson, Avisail Garcia, Marcus Semien. What is name 3 players out-hitting the "elite" Todd Frazier, Alex. But please trade 4 more young players for another proven veteran, Kenny Hahn. Even though it is a proven counterproductive strategy, it gives fans temporary succor and allows them to "dream again" First place sucks.
