It's not that complex. He is thought to own somewhere around 20% of the team. His tax hit will be a small fraction of whatever the final sale price is as he only owns a small fraction of the team.

He does not own 100% of the team, so his hit would be normal where near that amount.

At a minimum you have to have two sets of PLAYS (plural) in place. If there is a sack, then this. If the play works, then this. NO one had a fucking clue what to do after the sack. It took them 20 seconds to get a play in. My high school can do crunch time better than this. And when you see your team is a disaster, call a time out AND THEN set the next two plays, complete with the important sets of IF and THENs.

We literally have three game I can remember that we had a 95%, or higher, chance of winning, which the Bears lost. Those games alone make this a 7 win team. Pick a game like last week or this week , and that makes 8 without any real crazy "if only" type scenarios.

The whole world thought Nick was a high first round pick. If the Sox didn't select him, someone else would have. The Sox failed in developing him. Luis Arraez and Kwan show you that it CAN be done with a guy of his skillset. Granted, they could have drafted better, but don't let that failure, hide the development failure here.

The thing is there is a team out there in our division who turned a Madrigal like player into one of the leading skill hitters in baseball in Steven Kwan. Of course the Sox rushed Madrigal and we will never if taking a more deliberate and intelligent approach to his dev would have changed his path enough.

Letting Crochet walk away in two years would be corporate negligence.

Hell they didn't act like 2024 was a rebuild year until they got on pace for the worst season in the history of baseball.

And here's the thing, even with the pool of money the teams receive, it isn't cheap to run an MLB franchise. Take the White Sox numbers from 2024. Their 2023 payroll number was $187 million according to the spring 2024 Forbes numbers. Even with that number, the Sox had ANOTHER $129 million in operations costs NOT related to payroll, as even with revenue of $288 million, they lost $28 million on paper. We all know the Sox operation is one of the smallest in baseball, so even if teams start with $200 million in revenue on day one, most teams are going to have more than $130 million in operations costs before they ever cut a payroll check. Looking at revenue is a data point, but if you aren't looking at expenses too, you have no idea what you are actually looking at. It's like looking at someone's house value and assuming they are a millionaire because their place is worth a million dollars. It has nothing to do with their actual cash flow and liquidity.

Hearing Hays story, if you are convinced of his return to health, he makes sense as a flip candidate.
