QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) The problem is...the people can want anything, but there are consequences/tradeoffs that typically happen for things to happen. If you want better services, typically the trade is higher taxes. The initiative process though allows you to legislate higher services and lower taxes at the same time. How often has this happened out there? Most everything I have seen is rejection of taxes.

Shooting at Fort Hood
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 10:12 AM) Pretty much every two bit pundit is going to take something out of this, as there are so many hot button issues that can be pulled out of this (Muslim, Obama supporter, gun purchase, military activity/war, etc) and try to make himself look smart and prophetic. At the end of the day they are exploiting the deaths of 13 servicemen. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 10:15 AM) I assume he will be extradited and his detention and trial will be overseas since I was told that terrorists shouldn't be kept on our soil.

Shooting at Fort Hood
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 04:08 PM) Gunman is alive... a rare opportunity to understand the minds of these people and for relatives of those lost to exact justice on their own terms. He is off of the ventilator now, so it sounds like he should survive for a trial.

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 09:13 AM) The mess that states are in have very little to do with a specific party in power, sadly. Half of California's issues stem from referendum madness, imo. But the other half are very similar to issues that we saw reflected in the New Jersey election. Voters don't want state governments to fix systemic problems with the budget, they just want people who will promise to fix them. The referendum process is really interesting. At the end of the day it is the people saying what they want. The question becomes, how come practically a generation of California politicians haven't been able to adjust to a pretty consistent message from its residents?

Idea: Overbay for Armstrong & McCulloch?
I'd do it in a heartbeat. Those are two guys who will never sniff the majors. I am not sure why another team would even want those two to be honest.

Sox buyout Dye
QUOTE (joeynach @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 10:38 PM) We have said over and over and over again there will not be another old, slow, lift and pull, base clogging sighing on the south side for a very long time. Goodbye Dye and Goodbye Thome. There will be some big and slow sluggers on this team. If you look at the ballpark, you need some thump.

Sox 2010 DH
QUOTE (The Baconator @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 11:12 PM) MLB Trade Rumors Not sure if this is posted anywhere else but I remember seeing someone mentioning Vlad (probably in the RF thread), and MLBTR has some pretty wild predictions in this list but has predicted Vlad as our big move for DH. FWIW. Injuries have just tore him up. In reality, Jim Thome has been just as productive the last couple of years.

A letter from a fan inside Cuba
Its a different world. I wonder how much really gets through to the average person down there. Even with the government trying to bury stories, people have to be wondering why so many of their athletes keep disappearing and why.

Sox acquire Mark Teahen, $$$ for Getz/Fields
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 06:05 PM) So you are saying the manager has no say in who plays and who is on the roster. Interesting. Out of who comes out of AA and the like? Maybe some, but not nearly that much.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) Since you will not answer who is paying the higher revenue, I will assume you agree that more income taxes are being paid by us. And now we are paying for the current spending, plus the prior spending, plus the interest on the deficit. Plus, that would mean incomes are rising, something we are against in certain sectors because rising wages makes those products uncompetitive. (Autos for one) We agree that more money being spent generates more income. We cut someone's taxes and they decide to save that dollar, or spend it on a foreign vacation, or to buy a made overseas item, the effect is not as strong. The only entity we can be 100% guaranteed to spend the money is the government. Of course I would rather you and I spend the money than the government This all changes when we are rebating taxes because there is a surplus! The politician or party that pulls that off will have my vote forever. My objection is the bribing for votes that cutting taxes without changing spending brings. As you said, the bulk of the taxes are being paid by the middle class and above. I don't foresee that changing in the next couple decades. So those deficits will be paid by us, the middle class, with interest. When did a balanced budget become a liberal idea? I find it funny that during the 1990s with the GOP's "Contract For America" you would have been on the Dem side fighting against it and I would have been the GOPerhead. Higher income means higher total taxes paid, while at a lesser rate.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 04:00 PM) I understand that, however, you are missing my point. Revenues go up. OK I will accept that. Revenues going up mean someone is depositing more money. Who is that and what tax are they paying? Simple question. If you and I aren't accounting for those higher revenues, it must be corporations, and as you have always pointed out, corporations pass that on to the consumers. More money is circulation means more people are spending money. More people spending money means more income is being generated, more income means more taxes are getting paid.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) Who pays the additional revenue? I'll even give you a hint, it's the good looking guy we both see in the mirror each morning. No it isn't. Again, read the explanation of the multiplier effect. This is a definition based on deposits and loans, but the concept is the same on anything that has to do with revenues and collections. Just substitute taxes and savings in. http://www.investopedia.com/terms/m/multipliereffect.asp

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 01:23 PM) Arnold had a chance to be that fresh start. After the recall stomping, he could have legitimately pushed for institutional reforms and probably won. He even had advisors (Buffet) saying that prop 13 needed fixed. Instead, he cut the vehicle tax with no way to replace the revenue, launched pointless fights with the teachers unions (demanding concessions but offering nothing in return), borrowed his way through budget deficits in good times, and did nothing to plan for the future. The way he was elected, he had a genuine madate to reform the state if he wanted to use it. He didn't. A genuine mandate? I seem to recall just under half of the state being up in arms when he was elected.

Sox acquire Mark Teahen, $$$ for Getz/Fields
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 11:47 AM) I said if he thinks a player is major league ready, like he said of Jordan Danks, to take it with a grain of salt. He managed groups of guys that apparently were no where near major league ready for 9 years. So that means he doesn't know what major league ready is? That is an odd assertion, seeing as the field manager isn't the one who decides who is major league ready. That would be the general manager. Plus if you look at the teams he did manage, its not like he drove the 27 Yankees into the ground, he spent his years with some horrible Tigers and Royals teams, and meh Rockies teams.
