Sox vs Twins 7:10CDT CSN Floyd vs Blackburn
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 01:42 PM) I follow him on Twitter and didn't see anything today. Hence my confusion. Cool. I don't pay much attention to line ups until he posts something, as he is the only one in the organization who posts that sort of stuff.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 12:46 PM) Is that the real lineup? Can we get a source? Do yourself a favor... friend Scott Reifort on facebook. If you don't have a link, click my friends list and find him on there. He gets the line ups, plus he is my favor person to read about the Sox.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) THEN PEOPLE WON'T ALL SWITCH TO IT. Your argument is self-refuting. Also, employers now can say "f*** off, get your own." They don't do that because it allows them to retain better talent while paying less payroll taxes. I think the point is that people will be forced to switch to it because Employers will quit offering it as an option, just like they have quit offering pensions after social security came around.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) Which screws up first tonight: our defense or our bullpen? Easy, our defense. The pen doesn't even get a chance until the 7th or 8th inning tonight.

Congrats White Sox on reaching 100 errors already
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 11:26 AM) For anyone who will gripe about Ramirez defense, you can not tell me Beckham will be better defensively. Absolutely, no way will that be the case. Gordon tries hard, but he has zero range. I can't imagine all of the sudden at SS that would change too much. Alexei might be a spacecase, but he is a much better defensive SS than Gordo.

Financial News
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) does the US truly have "retained earnings" as per definition? In accounting, retained earnings refers to the portion of net income which is retained by the corporation rather than distributed to its owners as dividends. Similarly, if the corporation makes a loss, then that loss is retained and called variously retained losses, accumulated losses or accumulated deficit. Retained earnings and losses are cumulative from year to year with losses offsetting earnings. I would think that the US is in a deficit position in their retained earnings portion, and thus is being balanced out by capital infusion. (aka borrowing) That wasn't serious, but it really doesn't help. If any other business had $10 trillion in accumulated losses, it wouldn't be around still.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 11:12 AM) "Grassroots" efforts funded by corporate interests are astroturfing, even if the people at the rallies are genuine. Hmm, I guess that means that is astroturf for the grounds around the White House, eh?

The Ozzie Guillen job approval/disapproval poll
QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 09:55 AM) Don't know that there were any superiors offers for Swishie. but the guys he got in return were worthless for this season. And, let's remember who thought it was such a great idea to trade for Swishie one year earlier: Kenny Kool. Yes, he won a world series. Yes, he is aggressive and wants to win. But Williams also deserves some of the blame for this mess. Talking about a team with a $95-$100 payroll. And it hasn't worked. Plenty of blame to go around. Just don't forget to give some to Williams. He should not be bulletproof. It doesn't work like that. A GM can't just look at one year. He has to be looking down the road as well. A player's production can matter just as much as his contract does. Getting rid of a player that was going to cost you a ton of money was one hell of an achievement this year. Think of it this way, if Nick Swisher had been a free agent after last season, do you think someone out there would have signed him to a deal equivalent to what he had remaining on his contract? The answer is no. The fact that Kenny got anything for him, and didn't have to pay a dime of his contract was a win. The guy didn't fit in Chicago, pissed off his teammates, wouldn't listen to his coaches, didn't hit, and had no position on this team. Thinking he would have contributed anything worthwhile to this team in 2009 is just silly. To me it was more productive to get a year of minor league experience out of Dayan Viciedo than to have the Nick Swisher Show back for a return engagement.

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 10:24 AM) if you are Bank of America, I'd think you use the $73.8 billion in banked retained earnings that you've earned over time. Then the US can use its trillions of dollars in retained earnings (aka tax money) and quit taking any more money from me.

So out of curiousity, what should happen to the banks when customers don't pay?

The Ozzie Guillen job approval/disapproval poll
QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 09:15 AM) not arguing that Swisher should not have been gone. And it saved salary. But get somebody of value back. Marquez will never be a major-league pitcher and Kenny Kool was talking him up as the fifth starter, another Jon Garland, before the season. Hardly. Betemit lost this team at least two or maybe three games with his inept fielding. Too soon to make a call on Nunez. Vaz needed to be moved because of the way he faltered down the stretch last year. But he's miles better than what we replaced him with. Flowers might turn out to be a player. Hope he does. But let's see him do it. But there is considerable debate about his ability to be an effective big-league catcher. And Lillibridge is a total joke who has gotten way too many at bats in the big leagues this season. Gilmore and the other guy we got from the Braves are unknowns. Tony Pena has showed nothing in the heat the pennant race. Rios will be the center fielder and probably be a league average player. The problem is that it won't be long until he is making well beyond league average money. Peavy should be a stud. But getting him crippled our rotation for this year. When a team starts Jose Contreras and Freddy Garcia in four of seven games against the Red Sox and Yankees, that's a Kenny Kool problem, not an Ozzie Guillen problem. So what superior offer for Nick Swisher existed out there?

Blame Game
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) And especially after we saw what happened to the OF market last offseason, just dumping Swisher's salary was a win. If nothing else, I'm much happier having Rios than Swisher at this point, and it's going to take a Swisher-level of failure next season to convince me otherwise. Not to mention if Vazquez is still here, we don't finish a Peavy trade because of payroll for Swisher and Vazquez.

The Kenny Williams job approval/disapproval poll
QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 08:36 AM) I would like to see Kenny given a shot at restructuring this team. He obviously can find talent and make good moves, but his last two moves are not looking good...Pena is garbage and we gave up a fine power hitting spect for him and Peavy is currently damaged goods (now he has elbow issues). You can't win them all, but both those trades have done absolutely NOTHING for this team this year and both moves mortaged the future. That all said, I think the writing is on the wall and Kenny knows it's time to move a bunch of players out, getting younger and more exciting. This team has 'run its course'. It was a good run, but time to cut bait on numerous players on this roster. So getting a Cy Young pitcher signed through 2013 is mortgaging the future? Yeah, I quit reading at that point.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 08:34 AM) Where's your non-arbitrary line of demarcation? What government services lead to evil socialism and what government services are necessary for a functional society? Where is your line? What exact freedoms are you willing to give up so the government can make things "better"? I hear a lot of s*** from people who are willing to turn their lives over to the government, but I am curious for you all to start answering your own questions? Speech? Religion? Movement? Property?

Are you...
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) Outstanding. People are going to miss this type of candor from the manager who replaces Guillen one day. Any other coach would probably say the usual, "We're not out until the math says so." It also puts it on the players to perform. I love this. I don't know about you, but I miss the non-answers of Jerry Manuel and Ron Schueler.

Healthcare reform
BTW, arguments like this are exactly why there is the fear of the slippery slope amongst the right wing of this nation. There isn't a doubt in my mind that this is only a step towards total governmental health care, and the fact that the government keeps using its own agencies to justify the continued theft of freedoms only reinforces that.
