  1. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 02:39 PM) As many regulations as there are, there needs to be more, especially in the commodities market where it comes to food and energy. I'm again, not asking for the playing field to be leveled out or equaled. I think those with more should get more, as they risk mjore. I merely want these the big boys watched as to prevent manipulation, I want the uptick reinstated, etc. Commodities have never had the uptick rule. That is purely an SEC and stock rule. Besides that what else are you talking about that isn't already being done?
  2. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:52 PM) Supposedly the Hawks say they knew about his injury before signing him... Which was probably discovered during the .... PHYSICAL
  3. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:13 PM) You're just jealous because it would make your penis smaller... oh wait... /ducks I really have gone off the deep end today. BUT THINK OF HOW MANY CENTIMETERS THAT WOULD BE!!!
  4. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) It's also the socialist dream. I'm not asking for it to be balanced like that, I'm asking for proper regulation to make sure those with the means can't abuse the system such as they have and do. You mean like having position limits on commodities, and forcing anyone with concentrated positions to report those to the CFTC on a daily basis? We have tons of regulations, just for these reasons. The idea that people with little amounts of money are going to be equal with people who have tons is impossible still.
  5. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:05 PM) The Hunt Brothers came close, but failed even back in that day, and probably taught a lot of people a valuable lesson. It would be impossible today because the amount of money that's out there, and the world economy is involved in the US markets, too, making it even harder. I still don't see the playing field as balanced. I see it as more open in that anyone from any income range can be involved, but balanced...no, still far from balanced. Guys like Warren Buffett (one of many) can strike special deals with companies to buy a %, with downside guarantees...whereas a normal person cannot, that's not balanced as far as I'm concerned. Your idea of balanced is impossible. We will never have everyone with an equal amount of money. That is just pie in the sky right there.
  6. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:41 PM) 3 (102) – Bryan Morgado, LHP, Tennessee 7 (223) – Justin Jones, LHP, Oakdale Senior HS, CA 15 (463) – Dane Williams, RHP, Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL 17 (523) – Brian Goodwin, CF, Rocky Mount HS, NC 20 (613) – Nathan Reed, LHP, Pittsburgh (Think I read somewhere that he will not be signing) 25 (763) – Mike Strong, LHP, Iowa Western CC 36 (1093) – Ryan Crowley, LHP, Morton West HS, IL 43 (1303) – Tyler Williams, 3B, Chaparral HS, AZ 44 (1333) – Taylor Thompson, RHP, Auburn 46 (1393) – Grant Monroe, RHP, Northwest Florida State CC 47 (1423) – Jordan Yallen, OF, Golden Valley HS, CA 48 (1453) – Matthew Little, LHP, Bryan HS, TX 49 (1483) – Theron Geith, LHP, Scottsdale CC 50 (1513) – Kevin Chapman, LHP, Florida Thanks Dan. I am guessing none of those guys past Goodwin are very highly regarded, correct? So really we are down to 4, maybe 5 guys that matter, and we still have 2.5 weeks to go. Not bad at all.
  7. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) I think he meant "mind-boggling". Well if he meant for people whose brains could fit inside a coke bottle, he might be onto something as well
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:42 PM) A GM somewhere in Canada just peed down his leg. Yup. Not the best year to be gambling when that sort of money is involved.
  9. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:35 PM) <!--quoteo(post=1964419:date=Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:21 PM:name=southsider2k5)-->QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:21 PM) <!--quotec-->Drew Carey is pretty much awful at anything that doesn't involve being fat and unfunny. See all "Whose line is it anyway" (the US edition anyway) Whose Line is one of my favorite shows of all time... you could be having the worst day of your life and still pee your pants laughing. My All-Time Favorite Whose Line Moment: "H-O-R-W-A-R-D" "Watch out for those tempo changes. When we go into the second bridge, this s*** takes off" The show was great, as was the cast... well except for Carey. He was TERRIBLE. I loved the English version as well. Besides no Whose line is complete without the Richard Simmons skit.
  10. So do we have a list of who is left unsigned at this point?
  11. A poll on polls? Damn, my head hurts now.
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:20 AM) Mitchell will not play CF at the big league level. I wish people would stop thinking that just because he has speed he is a CF'er. With him in a corner and JorDanks in CF, we will cover a TON of ground. Does anyone really believe that both Danks and Mitchell with both end up as everyday players for the Chicago White Sox? Between normal failure rates for prospect, and Kenny Williams love of the deal, it is a problem I am sure not worried about.
  13. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:12 PM) Drew Carey is the worst gameshow host ever. Horribly, brutally, awfully bad. Drew Carey is pretty much awful at anything that doesn't involve being fat and unfunny. See all "Whose line is it anyway" (the US edition anyway)
  14. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:37 AM) Where in my post did I say the Hawks should have signed Marty? I didnt. In fact, I didn't even approach it. My view on Marty was to sign him to a 1 year deal, see if he can break the durability problems and then maybe ink him longer term if needed next year, OR ... let him walk if another winger develops thus allowing us to resign all our main pieces. So Marty balked at the one year deal and the negotiations were finished. No problem there. Hossa was NOT the only game in town at that point, but if he was the main game, then fine...why no serious questions about his terrible fall from grace in the playoffs (a fall likely caused by this injury?). Was there no question that Hossa "could be" a player with a lot of tread on his tire and while he's been healthy to this point, now is when the nagging injuries that a 10 year NHL career sometimes give you, start to manifest themselves? It appears the Hawks had no serious discussions about Hossa other than, "we gotta go get him"...it was a haphazard move and now that we'll spend the first 1/4 of the season playing without him, let us all hope the remaining kids can hold things together. I am not saying Hossa is NOT a good player, he clearly is a very good player and is better than Havlat in the defensive and neutral zones. I like Havlat's game better in the offensive zone from the standpoint of being able to create his own shot, but yes...given the equal choice between Hossa and Havlat I'd lean Hossa, but that's no longer a valid argument since Hossa is going to be coming back from -ironically- a shoulder surgery (the same thing that plagued Marty 2 years ago here in Chicago) and won't be on the ice for 4 months.... those 4 months he misses is NOT JUST the games he is actually not playing, but he misses valuable time building team chemistry on the ice with his would-be line mates. So even when he comes back, it's possible his line will be out of sync for some period of time as they build this needed chemistry. Toss in the fact, our most complete line last year (Bolland/Havlat/Ladd) is no longer in existence. I am certainly not calling my Uncle in Chicago asking him to reserve me those Stanley Cup tickets right now. So what big time scorer was willing to come to Chicago on a one year deal to replace Havlat?
  15. Great deal for Pittsburgh. Glad we don't have to see Clement for the next six years.
  16. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 11:34 AM) Sounds like Jeff Clement to Cleveland. Not a bad move. They seem to have problems getting pitchers to work out, but they crank out the hitters.
  17. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:18 AM) I don't mean that at all, the fact that anyone can be on the field is one thing -- that doesn't mean it's level. What I meant is that when it comes to commodity speculation, the big hedge funds (with billions in their cash coffers) weren't involved until the last few years. I'm not sure when they jumped on board, but I know they did. At one time they capped their involvement in these markets to something like 5% of their total funds, but when they realized what they could do, that number expanded a lot, and then we had them pouring billions into commodity speculation. 50 guys playing with 10,000$ that were once unable to get on the field is one thing -- they can now freely trade in a very easy and affordable manner...that's not my point. My point is when one of those 50 comes in and throws 2,000,000,000 on the table, the playing field isn't level. Just because you can play doesn't mean it's balanced. Even rich traders (individuals) don't speculate with billions...whereas hedge funds started to do just that. The playing field is way more balanced today than it was even 20 years ago. For example, do you think a Hunt Brothers situation could happen today?
  18. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 10:00 AM) Oh Good Lord: GOP: Dem Health Care Proposal Promotes/Requires euthanasia HOLY CRAP! I dont want grampy to be put to death! SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!! Oh Wait, It doesnt say any of what they claim: Even AARP.. ya know... the people that want to help old people, say the new line of attack is a joke. And AARP would be the first to cry fowl in a case like this. Why would they cry poultry?
  19. Another getaway day night game. Thanks for the FU Minnesota.
  20. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 09:13 AM) I feel kind of stupid even addressing this topic, but it has nothing to do with Ozzie being racist and everything to do with Ozzie's expectations of young players, and in the case of the Sox, most of whom happen to be white. Latin players get treated no different though. Remember Richar? He didn't last either. Ozzie favored Erstad over Anderson. Beckham and his production has probably won him over by now, and Beckham is favored over Fields obviously. Honestly though name the non-s***ty Latin prospects the Sox have had. There aren't many. Most of them are white, the farm system has the occasional black player but for whatever reason not that many of them make it to the big club as prospects. Its not performance. Its is work ethic and willingness to be taught. People that are willing to fall under these areas are fine. It is the ones who don't that are shipped out. It goes the same for the vets, but you usually have a better idea of these people, so there is less of a margin for error.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 09:31 AM) Sirotka Forget it, he's rolling.
  22. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 08:52 AM) I forgot to add something to this. I agree with this point and I do realize that they're not new. I think the system worked fine like that until the HUGE hedge fund institutions started getting involved. We are no long talking some millions here, but billions upon billions they were doing this with, and that caused the huge swings that we hadn't really seen in such markets before they entered it. Essentially they took a level playing field and came in with so much money, it was no longer level, and this gave them too much control. Historically, this is not true at all. There have been long periods of time where markets were dominated by the few. The playing field really didn't get leveled until the emergence of internet trading and the crash of the price of trading. Trading in general is more wide open to the masses than it has ever been.
  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 09:17 AM) Getz started off hitting like .320 or something in his first month. Who else was Ozzie going to play though? Nix was hurt. Lillibridge? He had no choice but to send him out there 5-6 times. During the June slump was when Nix was already back.
  24. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 08:19 AM) *position players He's been excellent at developing young pitchers, he has the right amount of patience. He seems to be the exact opposite with position players. He hasn't been patient with guys who are either refusing to make changes, or have a questionable work ethic. Gee, welcome to the real world. And if this was really the case, why did he hardly have a peep for Chris Getz when he was free falling down into the low .230s in late June? He still kept sending him out there 5-6 days a week.
