  1. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) Or, he made his plays (Peavy, then Halladay) they weren't accepted...so now, he's done with high profile trades. I would bet he makes a Geoff Blum/Tony Pena-type trade tho before the deadline. He has also supposedly been turned down for Dan Haren as well.
  2. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 07:25 PM) It really is much simpler than that. He may be an angel who spends all winter bringing the homeless blankets and dinner, but every year MLB goes around to every clubhouse explaining the rules. He heard it 20+ times in his career, gamble on baseball and you will be banned for life. It is so simple -- you do this, and we do this. The penalty was clearly laid out, it was clearly against the rules. Zero ambiguity. Now he should be excused because???? 4256 If he had 1000 career hits, no one would give s*** about him. But because he got a lot of hits and played hard, he should be exempt from the rules that have governed this game for almost a century now. Bulls***.
  3. Glad to see Garko gone before we play the Tribe again.
  4. I really wonder if payroll and the recession are killing the trade deadline for a lot of teams.
  5. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) Joe Mauer isn't too happy about the Twins not doing much. Apparently, Smith doesn't even want to give up some prospects and spend a million on Orlando Cabrera. But then again, who would? Cabrera would be a big upgrade for them, and it is his time of year. Plus you know he would love to stick it to the Sox.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 04:22 PM) I was thinking about also trying to explain the difference between venues - exchanges, light pools, dark pools, offer nets, etc. - but I just don't have the time to type all that out. Venue is key to understanding when an order is fair-viewed or not, and when it has to be or not, and to what audience, before execution. When a company internalizes order flow, they act as another market maker. They assume risk, even if momentarily, by taking on a trade and then offsetting it with another. Companies that use internalization have to have the operation completely separate from their brokerage operations as dictated by the SEC. A brokerage unit's only objective is to fill orders. There is also the misconception that internalization somehow hurts customers, which isn't true. In the end, even if a company didn't internalize order flow, the specialist in a particular area would make that same profit. A customer is always going to sell at the bid and buy at the offer, whether it is GS or a specialist in NYSE making the profit, it doesn't make a difference.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 04:02 PM) How exactly is that any different from "Frontrunning"? There is a big difference between a market maker and broker.
  8. Beef.
  9. So what do you think the Sox will do at the trading deadline? This is a quiz where you can pick more than one answer if you think that they are applicable.
  10. Boy this thread feels exactly like a religion/nonreligion thread.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 10:43 PM) Did someone say that? People should pay attention to him. He's getting more crap right than the majority of the other networks. That's the problem! Thank you for finally admitting that.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 06:53 PM) The NYT had an interesting piece that came out of the case of a programmer who left Goldman Sachs (and is being accused of Fraud by the company). It revolves around "High frequency trading operations". Basically, it seems like Goldman has put itself in the remarkable position of being able to see the future and profit from it. They simply have bigger servers, faster servers, and servers closer to the destination than a lot of the other traders out there. Thus, they basically allow a company to see the future; if they know the price one partner is willing to pay for a purchase, and they can find another partner willing to sell the same shares for a lower price, they can jump in and take the difference between the two prices as profit for themselves. Really, that shouldn't be legal. To be perfectly blunt, you don't understand the trading industry at all. The term for this is marketmaking, and it is done everywhere that there is a specialist based system. This actually saves the customers money in the long run because it narrows up the margins, and it makes for more efficient marketplaces. Pretty much every company out there internalizes order flow. The other part you left out is that the company is taking on risk in these trades and the spread is their rewards for assuming risk. Its not some horrible evil plot, it is the way that this stuff has been traded for hundreds of years now.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) The problem is not that he's Jon Stewart or that he's a comedian or that people actually trust him. The problem is the rest of them. Yeah, but he's just a comedian, and no one pays attention to him... lol.
  14. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) Maggs and Bradley are both having bad seasons. But this deal would help the Cubs tremendously. Bradley fits in perfectly in MoTown. The trade would dump two years of salary, which the Cubs need desperately right now.
  15. Ranger just said Danks through a side and his blister was fine. He is scheduled to make his next start.
  16. QUOTE (JFields27 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 02:34 PM) That would be interesting, would help out the cubs a good amount It would be a huge lift for them to dump that horrible deal.
  17. The other thing worth looking at is that if you promote someone, you have to take someone else out.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 06:46 PM) Just wait until Linebrink/Dotel/Jenks go on the DL...then we will see the logic behind KW's thinking, or when Dotel is traded...and the prospect/s we get to replace Allen. We have watched the entire pen start to circle the drain. Even Thornton had an era over 5.00 in June. I don't have a problem with them trying to reinforce that.
  19. This speaks for itself. Maybe we need people to obsessively follow everything he saids now? http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainmen...,6512647.column
  20. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) They just need quicker hooks. Get into trouble in the 6th/7th - out immediately. They aren't the same pitchers that they were 4 years ago. The reason the starters are going longer is because the entire pen is suffering a meltdown lately. We have no one out there right now who gives us a better chance to win than the starter they would be replacing.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 08:40 AM) Unless the rest of the team is made up of infants and senior citizens they'll be alright. Swine flu by and large has affected the healthy and moderately aged more than most groups. It has been odd in that respect.
  22. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 10:44 AM) Classic...Buy the Cubs...Win Nothing! Awesome.
  23. Wow, Kenny really believes we have a chance this year as he is putting his cards on the table all over the place.
  24. Barons Banter
  25. What more do you want out of your 5th starter than 7 IP and 3 ER? Expecting even that is really silly.
