If you won the lottery, what would you do with your life?
My biggest dream left would be to own a minority share of the White Sox and sit on its board of directors.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 28, 2003 -> 11:44 AM) I just got reading your latest write up, and a line jumped out at me about Kelly Wunsch being the one who actually organized the almost boycott of drug tests. Where did you hear this from? I haven't seen anything about who was the point man on this, let alone anyone else who was involved. If you have any more info I would love to see it. Thanks SS2k3 Mine was in response to an article from Soxnet.

QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 12:50 PM) I have spent the past two f***ing hours looking for the first post that I have ever done on soxtalk. Ever since Sqwert found his I have been obssessed with finding mine. No such luck for me so far. If it is like your last 4178 posts, it probably sucked and you are wasting your time...

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 09:27 PM) A strong candidate for the GOP... like, she'd do well in GOP primaries? Pretty sure she'd lose as bad as Mousavi Someone would have to rig the election to beat her?

Why is Clayton Richard in our starting rotation?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) It depends on what your goal is. If it's the 5th starter spot, you've got 4 other guys rolling, and you're looking to develop a young pitcher for the future, then you can certainly keep throwing someone out there who struggles to get through the 5th and has bad numbers. Give you a perfect example. Full season WHIP: 1.540. Got worse every month; 2nd half 1.642 WHIP, 7.11 ERA, 1-7 record. Who am I looking at? That's John Danks, 2007. Face it, Clayton has some talent, he just needs work. He's not getting that sitting on the bench. You want to develop a young starter in to something solid, you have to put up with some struggles. Would I have a problem moving Poreda in for some starts? No. Would I expect him to go more than 4 innings? No. That's how I see it. Let's face it, we might win this season, but 2009 is about breaking some guys in to get ready for the future. Richard could very well be one of those guys. We have lived through Garland struggles and Danks struggles, and Floyd struggles. No one doubts the stuff, it is a matter of learning on the job.

QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 11:26 AM) Time for Bekham to bat 2nd? HItting is the one thing Lexi has done consistantly in the last couple of months, I don't want to touch that part. I just want to smack him for his defensive mental vacations.

The environment thread
QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 11:04 AM) The post I was originally responding to and I will elaborate. Did I really need to mention that there are an infinite number of lifestyles between altruistic and s*** on society? The s*** on society folks are our murders, rapists, etc. The Mother Theresas of the world occupy the other end. In-between are the rest of us. Some are closer to one end of the spectrum, others are closer to the other. We all choose our path in life and what we value. One of the things I enjoy about this site are guys like SS who is so involved in his local schools, YMCA, etc. NSS and Middle of Somewhere adventures, all the coaches, we even have a Peace Corp alumni posting from time to time. I'd rather be known for what I gave away than what I kept. Hey if you are looking to give away some stuff, you know my address!

I guess I forgot to say this last night, but I would be curious what other people would grade our players at, and what their midseason awards would look like.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 06:49 PM) 7th rounder with only a 1,000 signing bonus? Sounds like quite the overdraft. College seniors also have zero leverage.

Haren Available?
As some of these teams get closer to the deadline and are forced to slice payroll, I think we might be surprised how little they get because it will be hard to take on money.

Jared Mitchell Signs
LSU's coach is even quoted as saying he doesn't expect Mitchell back in school. I have not heard anything about where they expect him to land after he signs.

Halfway home in 2009
QUOTE (forrestg @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 11:35 PM) I don't understand giving grades to our players. Are you a teacher or something. This is a team not a classroom. The second half of the season may yield entirely different results. Beckham has been coming around Dye, Getz even Fields might put it together. We can finish judging them at the end of the season. Another point 84 and 77 is not going to get us into the playoffs . 90 wins isn't a guaranteed of getting in but if we were to make it to 90 your a b c and d grade pitchers and hitters need to step up so they can get a scholarship. HOw can you be undecided about Beckham? He is the real deal. It's this thing we do on message boards... You know, discussion? Its something to talk about. When we get to the end of the season, we will probably talk about it again with the new perspective of the results at that time. As for Gordo, he has been with the team for about a month now. I am not saying he hasn't been good, it is just a little early.

QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 11:33 PM) Thome's average with runners on is basically the same as Konerko's. His OPS is 50 points higher and his homeruns and RBI are close despite not playing NL parks. I dunno, just seemed strange. I could see one grade higher just depending on how you value certain things, but 2 seems excessive. Thome is hitting .269 with RISP, Konerko is hitting .343. How is that even remotely close to the same?

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 11:26 PM) i disagree with danks and floyd - sure they both had their struggles, but look where their ERA's sit right now, along with peripherals, and even if they WERE streaky, they're way better than an average major league starter. I'd give them B's at the least. Grades are based partially off of player expectations.

QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 11:17 PM) Why do you have Konerko two grades higher than Jim Thome? Konerko is hitting .300 has as many homers as Thome, leads the team with 50 RBI, and in the top 10 in the AL with RISP. Thome is hitting right about .250, and is doing exactly what is expected of him, nothing more. Nothing special to write home about.

QUOTE (rangercal @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 11:11 PM) How does Linebrink get a higher grade than Alexei? The rest of the grades look pretty spot on though. Alexei's stuff is more mental than physical, which I grade much harsher on. You might not be able to prevent someone from hitting a pitch, but you can control the mental aspect of the game.

QUOTE (Jim Spencer @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 11:05 PM) If it wasn't for all the mental errors on defense I'd move Alexi up to a C+ or B-. You left off Mike McDougal in the F group. I didn't grade out any guys who were no longer in the organization.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 10:38 PM) As long as they have 41 votes on any particular bill (not the same thing as seats) they have the filibuster. And of course they don't actually have to really filibuster, just say they're doing it, because Harry Reid was doing situps one morning and pulled on the back of his head a little too hard and his spine fell out. That is god awful logic. Applying that same standard, I can blame the Democrats for every single thing that happened during the Bush administration, because they could have stopped it.

Halfway home in 2009
Well today was game #81. The Sox sit at 42-39, which would put them on pace for an 84-78 season. This is always a nice point to stop and evaluate the team, and how they have done. My first half MVP is Jermaine Dye, with a nod towards Paul Konerko's clutch hitting. My Cy Young is Mark Buehrle, with some love for Matt Thornton and DJ Carrasco. The biggest disappointment has been Josh Fields, followed by Alexei Ramirez. Comeback player of the year is Pods in a runaway. The Dr Jeckle and Mr Hyde goes to both Jose Contreras and Gavin Floyd in a tie, with a mention to Alexei who can do it from play to play. Here are my individual grades... The A's Mark Buehrle Matt Thornton Paul Konerko Jermaine Dye DJ Carrasco Scott Podsednik The B's Octavio Dotel Bobby Jenks AJ Pierzynski The C's John Danks Gavin Floyd Jose Conteras Scott Linebrink Chris Getz Jason Nix Clayton Richard Jim Thome The D's Alexei Ramirez Brian Anderson DeWayne Wise Ramon Castro Bartolo Colon Jimmy Gobble The F's Josh Fields Brent Lillibridge Wilson Betemit Incomplete Gordon Beckham Aaron Poreda Wes Whistler Carlos Quentin Jack Egbert

7/4 Game Thread Sox @ Kansas City 12:10pm CSN
QUOTE (High Mileage @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 05:45 PM) The gun has been the same for our pitchers whether we were in Kansas City, Los Angeles, Oakland, Chicago, etc. It hasn't been for us. The only time Jenks has hit 99 this year was in KC. All of the sudden Linebrink was even hitting 97, which is a joke.

Who Is Kenny Trying to Shake Loose?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 04:10 PM) David Cook is worth nothing in a trade. Less than Anderson. There would be teams lining up to get Snell just for the chance to try to fix him.
