Rod Blagojevich officially facing federal corruption charges
QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) I think the difference here is, most reasonable people don't even suspect Obama did anything wrong since it basically says he wasn't going to give Blago anything in the affidavit, whereas Bush would just stonewall and claim executive privilege whenever there was even a hint of wrongdoing. Unless this is a part of a larger strategy (my guess is avoiding the need to testify), Obama's creating unnecessary drama by being tight-lipped here. The very actions he is undertaking here arouse suspicion where there should be none. If he had just came out and said I did the prudent thing and met with the governor regarding my replacement, there really isn't much that could be said. Instead they went through the back door, with not even direct contacts, but something like 5th party contacts. Why go so far to try to hide your meeting, even before an arrest had been made. and Blago became political kryptonite? Heck he promised us more direct contacts with dictators, yet he won't meet face to face with the governor of his own state, even before his arrest? The more I read, the funnier things smell.

Rod Blagojevich officially facing federal corruption charges
QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 01:14 PM) That by itself really means absolutely nothing, and is 100% acceptable unless Obama was somehow involved in bribes (and from the affidavit it appears he wasn't). I mean, really, what dummy actually thinks a senator leaving to become president wouldn't talk to the governor of his state about a replacement? Obama's a moron for answering the question the way he did, turning this one-day non-story into a week-long or longer story, still about nothing. That's been my issue from day one with it. If you want to be different than the administration you are replacing, you probably shouldn't be using their playbook.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 11:51 AM) Daley will keep getting re-elected for the rest of his life as long as he keeps getting results for the city... give people that and they'll look past fact that he's obviously a crook, as long as he doesn't get caught red-handed in anything. It sounds simple, but that's a lot to ask for in IL. The thing is that his results have resulted in record taxes and fees, and he still manages to keep getting votes. Its crazy.

So here is how you have "no contact" with Blago on your replacement... you have your Chief of Staff tell his aides to contact the Governors aides to talk to the governor about your list of acceptable replacements for your old job. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122926660096904673.html

QUOTE (CubKilla @ Dec 13, 2008 -> 11:53 PM) Illinois is pretty dumb..... at least when it comes to voting. When Ryan and Blago ran for Governor, it was well known to Illinoisan's that both were being investigated for crimes commited while holding public office but Illinoisan's had to stick to voting those party lines. And don't even get me started on the Jesse Jackson Jr.'s, Luis Gutierrez's, and Todd Stroger's of Cook County. Illinois voters deserve every rib we get cause we're some dummies. Not to mention Rich Daley getting 80% of the vote in every election...

It seems as if the timing of the Blago arrest wasn't exactly what it was supposed to be. The Trib was about to blow the Feds cover. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/12/14/t...-of-their-case/

Fall of '08 television season thread
QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 01:38 AM) anyone watch House of Saddam on HBO? With something like that its always impossible to tell what is based on fact and what isn't but it was interesting and entertaining nonetheless. I don't have HBO, but I have taken in a show on the Hussein regime on either History Channel or Discovery, either way it was just incredible. The things that were done were just mind-blowing.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 10:45 PM) I have seen more about "inexperience" and "Obama" in the same sentance from our oh-so-glorious main stream media since election day then "Bush" "sucks" and "Iraq" from 2003 on. It cracks me up how all of a sudden, he's no longer the messiah. Keep the expectations low, you know. I have also heard I don't know how many times in the last six weeks about how Obama wasn't really detailed when offering his opinion on [insert issue here], which we never really heard before November 4th either...

Sox enter rebuilding phase
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 11:17 PM) I wouldn't have minded a trade for Taveras earlier, but now we know he's hurt. The f***ing Nationals (I'm pretty sure it was them) wouldn't take him because he couldn't pass a physical. Anderson has earned a starting spot. He did everything asked of him last year, and I didn't hear any complaints. Give him the chance he has worked for. I am pretty sure someone else on here posted that it wasn't Tavares but the pitcher that the Rocks were getting back that failed a physical.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 13, 2008 -> 03:54 PM) As soon as they make a car that would actually interest me, I will. Assuming they don't go bankrupt and push us all in to depression that is. And I believe the launch date for the first car from these companies that will actually interest me is what, 2010? Which is funny. People say they won't buy an inferior product, so they buy Japanese cars instead. Yet we expect the government to take our money and support a product that no one seemingly wants. Sure, that makes perfect sense to me. If the auto companies are that important, buy a damned Chevy. Its BS that the expectation is that someone else pays for these auto-workers. If you want to buy a Toyota or Honda, that is your choice, but don't expect Congress to fix things when the country's decision making actually has the common sense results that come from it.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Dec 13, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) People just don't recognize the economic realities involved. I mean it's great that people all think UAW workers should have superior benefits to all other comparable industries; if you think this is the case you can at least buy American cars to show your support. It’s sad that people will still blindly support these unions merely for political reasons. Reasonable adjustments to benefits certainly seem appropriate right now, it's not some evil plan to destroy people. The Japanese business models are better, they will not be bankrupt in 15 years. The reality is that companies need to adjust retirement and benefit packages when they are losing money at this type of devastating pace. If not they go bankrupt and reorganize. Doesn't matter though, GW Bush is going to go along with whatever before he gets out of office and pass this on to Obama. You actually hit on my favorite part of all of this. We get to hear things like "why is it so bad that these guys make as much money as they do?" and all of the other class warfare type stuff that goes along with these debates, and the bottom line is that if people REALLY believed in these workers, they would be buying American cars. THAT is the one bailout that will actually work. If you don't care about American autoworkers, keep buying Toyota's and Honda's.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Dec 13, 2008 -> 12:01 AM) What I can't believe is what so many people here are advocating, essentially going back on the word of a company who expected and received decades of loyalty from their employees in exchange for health benefits and a pension. It's sad that this is seen as unacceptable by so many here. Toyota/Honda/Nissan's advantage? They don't have nearly a century of history behind them of building cars in the US and don't have those legacy costs. In 15 years, they will. Chrysler got a bailout loan thirty years ago and it worked for them for quite some time. In 15 years, they won't have those costs. The legacy costs are a direct product of labor pushing for and receiving concessions from the car companies in the 50's and 60's for things like full pensions and health care for life.

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 02:38 PM) Well good! Bailey is f***ing trash, so if the Sox don't get him for Dye straight up, we'll be very lucky. HOPEFULLY there is a better offer out there for Dye that we can take, and then sign Abreu. Let's keep this at least respectful. There is really no need to call someone f***ing trash.

Is there a list of potential non-tender candidates out there?
I think you can also non-tending players that are in the pre-free agent years, correct?

QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 01:43 PM) We are gonna lose bailey to another deal-while Rome burns & Nero (KW) fiddles It has happened to him before-for all the kudos he gets about making deals, he also has procrastinated himself out of players he has wanted in the past Because we all know Kenny Williams is afraid to pull the trigger
