Single Game Playoff Tickets
QUOTE (watchtower41 @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 08:07 AM) They probably won't send them out until later tonight, and you'll get an email either way if you won in the lottery for a chance to buy tickets, or if declined. I got a declined email from the Cubs yesterday evening (they were supposed to send their results out yesterday) Great idea for those who did the Tampa lottery, I totally didn't even think about that. That would be great if they sent them out either way. It will at least let you know where you stand.

Official 2008-2009 NHL Thread
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 04:59 PM) This is from the coaches office in Rockford. It was taken a few weeks ago. Could give a glimpse into what to expect. No Beach or Aliu. Interesting.

Sounds like the Rays already sent theirs out and my fiancee got an e-mail this morning from the Cubs. (Yes, she's a Cubs fan). I was just wondering the samething myself. I have no golden email

Ozzie : 1 Reality: 2
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 10:19 PM) Common knowledge that the Sox are a bad team? No matter what happens in Minnie they were not a bad team this year. This was a Jackyll-Hyde team, skitzo, but not a bad team. p.s. Please Ozzie, do not pitch Boone or Ramirez this series. If you do put them on the mound, it means we lose that game. The only way you see those guys on the mound is if we are getting our asses kicked.

2008 Chicago Cubs Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 09:13 PM) The team you hate the most should be the team you want to play AND BEAT in the WS. That is the team I want to see go 0-162 while we go win the World Series.

Banks
QUOTE (Texsox @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 07:12 AM) And so 1980s They aren't wanting to give up the overnight lending rates they are making on sitting on your money. It's more than just lack of infrastructure.

I have found that your local newspapers usually have the best info. Many usually have some kind of feedback/message board area for local talk.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (Texsox @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 06:37 AM) Interesting question. Just what is Joe Taxpayer paying for in this bailout? Seems like we're giving the money to the folks that made the bad loan, so they get a nice check and they get to keep the loan. America, what a country. I think Balta left out the conclusion, at the end the homeowners will owe the government. Have the government hold the paper. You hit in on the head. In this case we at least own the assets and get something out of it. In his case, we are giving away homes. You think home prices are falling now, trying giving some houses away.

Banks
QUOTE (Texsox @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 06:47 AM) I guess I should be clearer. They have on-line banking, and from what I've seen with the interface, it is nice. What I'm getting at is direct deposits and wire transfers are batch processed overnight. I've become accustomed to instant availability of those funds. They tell me this will require a substantial update to their infrastructure which will be completed in the Spring. Ah. That makes more sense.

Banks
QUOTE (Texsox @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 11:11 PM) You mean they don't live up to their slogan "Just a Little Better" They bought the best area bank down here. I hope they don't screw it up. They took one major step backwards, their system is not on-line, so direct deposits take overnight to batch process. Not on-line? This is the 21st century, in my eyes it would be an instant dealbreaker.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 07:17 PM) So then here's an alternative. We're dumping $1 trillion or $2 trillion or something like that in to the economy. The U.S. has a $12 trillion mortgage market, IIRC. If the problem is bad mortgage debt, why not take the $1 or $2 trillion and instead of handing it over to banks, use it to pay off a chunk of the mortgages for the people who are falling behind? IF the loans are paid off, if the loans don't go bad, then the people on wall street don't win because the profit from those loans was processed a long time ago, but they also don't lose because the loans are paid off. If you are willing to pay for my house, just send me a check. We'll cut out the middle man.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 03:07 PM) Here's my biggest problem with that. The fed and key banking institutions were just as instrumental in bringing about this mess as the Congress was. You can divide the blame 50/50 between Greenspan and Gramm, or 75/25, 90/10, whatever...the fed was just as complicit. Greenspan praised the new financial institutions and encouraged people to try these new mortgages that were so helpful in increasing homeownership around the country. What a great thing, higher homeownership stimulating the economy, all built by these new financial instruments. You say you're a fan of leaving this with the people with key banking knowledge. Those same people were denying there was a housing bubble in 2006. Those same people were saying that we should be open to these new ARM's, and that these new financial instruments in the $70 trillion credit swap market were nothing at all to worry about because the people running them understood what they were doing. Now that it's blown up...they've been fairly effective in dealing with the problem, but that's in no small part because they've been willing to dump trillions of dollars in public money in at a whim. Why should I trust people who were as instrumental as anyone in bringing the debacle about? The irony is that many of these changes were sold as Democrats as ways of increasing poor and minority home ownership rates. It was supposed to be another way of bringing people into the middle class and freeing them from the vicious circles of things like rent and poverty in general. The two lowest quinttiles, by and large, have been the biggest victims and losers in all of this, because they were the ones getting the mortgages they couldn't afford, as much as anyone else was. Guess what, there are some people that just can't afford a mortgage, no matter how you dress it up.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 04:37 PM) If I had money to risk, the Euro looks good about now. Europe is going to get drilled by all of this as well.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 02:52 PM) If this bailout puts more pressure on the dollar, I would definitely think that we could see a new run on oil. The dollar got crushed today, and oil rallied off of that to start. I don't know if that will start a new trend or if today was the one day adjustment to that news. That is where you can make your money if you are right

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 02:46 PM) So does this mean we're likely to see oil come back here? The November contract is trading $109. So when you start seeing the price tomorrow, that is what you will see quoted. I guess it will look like an $11 loss before it even trades.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 02:38 PM) I think I just saw SS2K agree with AHB, albeit indirectly. Getting past off of the partisian crap that gets slung back and forth here, you'll very rarely see me agree with giving the executive branch more direct power. In this case, it will be yet another government bureaucracy that will probably never go away and end up costing the taxpayers more than if the government had never been involved in the first place.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) There's a plethora of editorials out today blaming the Democrats for everything wrong with the economy. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=new...d=aSKSoiNbnQY0# http://townhall.com/Columnists/NealBoortz/..._meltdown_story So McCain employs lobbyist and gets a commerical made about him. Obama himself takes $125,000 directly from these companies, and doesn't see how he might be responsible for part of this mess?

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 02:11 PM) So ummm oil, spiked 25 dollars today. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080922/ap_on_bi_ge/oil_prices That's kinda misleading. What you just witnessed there was a nasty short-squeeze combined with bad news. The second month contract was only up $6. All of the people who were short through the selling had to get out today and got killed by the dollar getting sold off. If this wasn't October last trading day, that last $20ish worth of rally doesn't happen.

$700 Billion Bailout
The very first point of all of this is that if anyone is going to run the banking sector, it should be the Fed Bank, and not the White House. Anyone who is OK with this is fooling themselves. This is a terrible idea.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) every bailout in US history has been profitable for the US government and tax payers... just an FYI. The SNL bailouts cost the taxpayers $125 billion. Doesn't sound like a profit to me.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) Chris Dodd's office has put out the outline of some changes he'd like to push on to the bill. I think they'd be an improvement, although I still don't like the bailout concept here. Dodd is an idiot if thinks this program is going to make a profit. Its either that or a completely transparent pandering going on.

Late September and I really should be back in school
QUOTE (Shadows @ Sep 21, 2008 -> 02:18 AM) Im from Chicago, there is no bias I just love football, much like everyone else in this country. Football is not only king in Texas, but pretty much the USA. Some MONDAY night football games draw bigger or close to ratings as the World Series does. Now I love baseball too, but football is just something else. Plus, baseball is 162 games almost playing EVERY day. Football is once a week for 16 games and playoffs. If I miss a weekend of football I cant stand it because its gonna be almost a week before its back. If I cant catch a Sox game no big deal they will be on tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day after that TWICE, and then the next day. I would for sure watch a Sox playoff game over any regular season game for football though. If it's all about popularity, you are a fan of the wrong baseball team.
