Josh Fields to have surgery at season's end.
QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 09:40 AM) FWIW Joe Cowley has said on several occasions that the Sox will pursue Chone Figgins in a trade this offseason to play 3B for next year's team. It looks like there's just no confidence in Josh at this point. That would kill two birds with one Chone for sure.

Jay Mariotti leaves the Sun-Times!...Goes to the Tribune? Nope!
QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 09:24 AM) No just the opposite, if they fired him they would be voiding the non-compete. He quit and they can not force him to work. He just can't quit to go work next door. Think about marketing or a client related business where you can quit and take you customers with you. That is the case here. The story about Jay not liking sports really hits the nail on the head as realistically the Bears, Sox, Hawks and cubs are all pretty good franchises here and the Bulls have some nice talent. An opinion column in Chicago now a days would be beyond simple to write. SWEET!

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 10:10 PM) Not so fast, says Sun Times lawyers. They threatened to sue for No-Compete issues and the Tribune backed off I'm not an expert on contract law, but by accepting his resignation doesn't that void the NCO?

Josh Fields to have surgery at season's end.
QUOTE (YASNY @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 09:06 AM) We should try something unique in the future. Let's try drafting baseball players. To be fair, the jury is still out on two of those three kids.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 11:19 PM) Cowley right on the money again, as tonight the tribune has a story near the top of it's sports page on the website saying Mariotti is not joining the tribune. Stay hot Joe Cowley!! Awesome!!!

Josh Fields to have surgery at season's end.
QUOTE (YASNY @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 08:50 AM) How come we draft more quarterbacks than the Bears do? The sad thing is Borchard, Richards, and Fields would probably be better than what they have now...

Well hopefully that is going to fix the kid, because him being a complete bust is a worst case scenario.

Gavin Floyd you are da man
Real Men of Genius Here's to you Mr Getting-Pitchers-nobody-else-wants-when-they-are-out-of-options-Guy. But Matt Thorton sucks!! When there is a stud pitcher to be found, and no one else can see them, you find them. The fact that they are out of options only helps you steal them from another team Gavin Floyd couldn't get out my little league team! So here's to you Mr Getting-Pitchers-nobody-else-wants-when-they-are-out-of-options-Guy. Here comes 5th place

Oney Guillen
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 07:31 AM) That would be impossible to determine. I would imagine it would have some affect on his teammates at lower levels who outperformed him and were obviously better players than him only to see him advance because of his last name. Who knows if that discouraged one or some enough to where they don't develop into useful players. It might be understandable if a high pick moves up, but a 36th rounder hitting .120 with 1000 errors moving up and you're staying put might just put a thought in the back of your mind that you can't play. If the guy's name was Oney Jones, he never would have been drafted or signed. If they were that discouraged by that, something tells me they weren't going to have the testicular fortitude to advance to the majors anyway.

Top 10's after 2k8
I'd be curious to see the minor league guru's Top 10 Sox prospect lists now that the 2008 minor league season has drawn to a close (and Kenny hasn't had a chance to trade anyone yet). For arguement's sake, lets leave out Richard and Broadway with their time they have had up here (if they were going to be listed anyway).

For Minnesota to catch us now...
Quit worrying about the Twins and enjoy the stretch run. There is nothing like a pennant race boys, they don't come along too often. Even when we have won, it usually hasn't been this close for this long.

Your first place Chicago White Sox!
84-66 +2.5 games over MN.

Crede Likely done in Chicago
QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 05:13 PM) ..should've traded him after the 2006 season when we had a chance. Except we really didn't have that chance. The one team that was interested, really didn't want to give up much for him.

50 FAVORITE WHITE SOX PLAYERS
A lot of players could learn a lot from Carlton. I see a lot of the same traits in AJ, just not the God given talent level. He was a guy who could get everything out of his teammates. One of the all-time greats.

Feds Takeover Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 03:22 PM) Here's the problem with that line of thinking I have. If I'm an actor outside of the political system...say I'm running one of these businesses...what is my main motivation? Am I working as CEO of FNMA because I want to serve the public good, because I want to make that company stronger, or because I want to make myself as much money as possible? For the private sector...the actual correct answer there is "To make myself as much money as possible". Whether they lie, rewrite the rules, whatever, to get to that point...as long as they don't break the law to the point that their money is taken from them or they go to jail, then maximizing their personal benefits by taking big gambles with the money they're in charge of and ditching out before things turn sour is a perfectly rational behavior. They can retire with tens of millions of dollars in the bank at fairly young ages. You can blame them all you want, complain, be angry with them all you want...but they're going to walk out of this millionaires because that's what the system encourages them to do. And you can swap out FNMA for any of these companies that are falling apart right now. Then again you are making the assumption that as a government entity your motivation is to do public good. Most of the time the motivation is to do just enough work to justify your existence and/or budget. I am really not convinced over the period of decades that a government bureacracy won't cost taxpayers more money than anything the private sector would do.

Loser
QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 02:20 PM) I hate this attitude that we can afford to lose a game right now that we're 2 games up in the loss column. In a few days we can be really regretting that attitude. It could happen we get blown out tonight and wish we went hard for the win yesterday...especially with how bad we suck on the road The irony is we are seeing the fruits of the idea that you can use the same guy over and over again with the complete blow up of O Dotel and his arm practically falling off in September.

Crede Likely done in Chicago
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 01:23 PM) The rumor going around on another site is that the Sox believe Boras has talked to the Angels about Crede going there next season, and with those "negotiations" going well, he's advised Crede to not take any chances the rest of this season. The White Sox were made aware of this, and they told Crede/Boras to f*** off. The Angels are tampering? Interesting.

Loser
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 01:01 PM) The thing is, there are better options than Wassermann. MacDougal, Carrasco, or Russell could have easily been brought in last night to start the 7th inning. Also, what's the point of playing match-ups with Ramirez if hitters are going to bat over .350 against him? The combination of Ramirez and Wassermann has lost us 3 games in the past 2 weeks. MacDougal who gave up a hit and a walk before getting an out? Carraso who gave up two hits, allowed an inherited runner to score, and didn't record and out the night before, plus has an era over 9 this month? Russell who has a 5 and a quarter ERA with a .365 baa and 1.56 WHIP this year? Maybe I could agree with Mike M, but in reality, how sad is it that we are begging for Mike MacDougal right now? Are you really saying you would want to have him on the mound in a pressure situation anymore than anyone else? He didn't look that good when he did get out there, I doubt he would have been much better starting the inning. Again, Ozzie has s*** to pick from unless it is Jenks or Thornton time.
