Ahmadinejad's party losing in local elections
Why should we bribe Iran to NOT nuke somebody? I don't get the mentality that we can just talk the rest of the world into doing something that is against their entire exsistance. There are people in the world who are dedicated to our destruction, no matter how much money we offer them to go away. Talking to Iran isn't going to prevent anything, and neither is bribing them. We have tried that all over the world, it doesn't work. Just look at Pakistan today. We have tried bribing them to help us out with the Taliban, what did it get us? They ceded over control of their territory to them. We got nothing. Appeasement doesn't work.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 01:15 PM) The plutonium which was used in the device North Korea test-detonated last summer was under U.N. lock and seal and monitored by cameras until 2002, and was reprocessed during early 2003. They were only able to build that bomb because the U.S. ignored them for around 4 years, and so they threw a tantrum. North Korea did not do whatever it wanted; it did not produce anything remotely successful on the line towards a nuclear weapon until they pulled out of the Nonproliferation treaty and the accords agreed to with the Clinton Admin. So this tought us what? That if we let a madman refine plutomium, they can build a bomb whenever they get pissed off, right? So why would we ever let a man whose sole purpose is the destruction of other people, have a facility where he could begin doing just that??? NK always had their weapons program going on, which is why they had the ability to turn it into a weapon as quick as they did. If we had actually stepped up and stopped them years before they accumulated plutonium, they wouldn't have been able to to build a bomb in the first place. I am sorry but I don't see giving a man bent on destruction the means to do so, and then sit and try to convince him that he should not blow people up. It leaves us up the the whims of people like Kim Jung Il. We cannot appease Iran, I just won't buy that.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 12:19 PM) And considering that Iran does have its own supplies of uranium-ore, I think that means we desperately need some sort of inspection regime in that country. Dispite what they say, they are going to be doing whatever they want to be doing, just like North Korea did. They were bribed with everything in sight, complete with a Michael Jordan autographed basketball toted over by Bill Clinton himself, and they still had an undergroud weapons program going on all along. Talking to them, has not, and will not solve anything. This is a country that gets together every Friday after prayers and chants "Death to America" and "Death to Israel". Iran doesn't want a biscuit, they want our disctruction, and have been quite clear about it. Its not like this is a product of the evil Bush either. The Iran nuclear program has been going on since the 1950's. Besides even if they do get inspectors into the country, however we have to bribe them to do it, they will play the same shell game that Saddam did in Iraq, by moving stuff around, and stalling inspectors until they could tidy up the facilities that they wanted to visit. Appeasement does not work. Historically it hasn't worked, and it won't work today.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 12:07 PM) Which is all the more reason, to my eyes, to keep them from getting a nuclear weapon, something which is not happening with the current policies. The best way to be kept from making a nuclear weapon, is to not have any nuclear material in the first place. Its kind of hard to fire a guy without any bullets.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 11:55 AM) Is it even worth pointing out in reply that under the nonproliferation treaty (to which both the U.S. and Iran are Signatories) Iran does have the right to develop nuclear technology for energy purposes, and inspections in the past have done a very good job of containing countries when they're actually allowed to proceed? Just as much as it is worth pointing out Iran's repeated overtures towards the destruction of Israel, and their leaders religious beliefs that they destruction of Israel begins the rapture.

Best of Soxtalk 2006 Nominations
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 11:13 AM) I want to point out one rule I have for these awards. There will be absolutely no spamming of members for votes or anything like this. There is no self promotion, this is not like running for president. This is meant to be a fun off-season thing and it is something that has become a bit of a tradition here at Soxtalk. Hopefully we have some new winners this year and I'll be excited to see who gets to join me in the Hall of Fame Class, but for any of you members posting on roids, I will petition to have you removed from the hall [slinks away, quietly]

"Increasing transparency" isn't ending the nuclear program. A nuclear Iran is a danger to the world. Period.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 10:52 AM) Iran has been making overtures to talk to the U.S. about a permanent settlement since 2003 according to one of Colin Powell's former deputies. Those overtures have been rebuked each time they hit the Vice President's office. How many included them dismantling their program?

Interesting update to yesterday's story... I guess the Supreme Leader's name is beginning to get tossed around as not being happy with what has transpired in Iran. I wonder if we could be seeing the door creek open to a compromise on Iran's nuclear program?

2008 Presidential Announcement Thread.
Hillary is going to refuse public funding for her Presidential run, as well she should if she wants to win... Personally I would like to see one canditate who said they are wanting to reform campaign financing actually make the statement by sticking with public funding, and trying to find alternative ways to get their message out. I'd have much more respect for that than sticking with the flawed system. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=206....Q&refer=us

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 07:48 AM) Funny that they don't mention Chicago, who seem to be pushing NY's derivatives markets to the brink (aside from oil and gas). That's because NY's deriv's markets have long been behind Chicago's. They put too much power into the greedy seatholders who had no vision for the future except protecting their monopoly. The exchanges in Chicago have always had more power outside of the seatholders, which is why you had innovations like TOPS, Globex, and ECBOT for electronic trading. NY didn't make a move until Globex started listing NY contracts.

QUOTE(beautox @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 07:14 AM) i would think this would just reaffirm it, Kotchman hasn't lived up to the hype and now McPhearson is out for all of 07, Shea is a butcher at 3B, and i guess hes passable at 1B, figgins is "teh" suck at 3B. Fields is ML ready, and now that Crede has a price attached to his name for this season he can be delt. I'm all for seeing Aybar and Sean Rodriguez coming back to Chicago, Sean can take over 2B full time next year when Iguchi goes to FA, Aybar can take over for uribe this year or next if he sits in the minors for a year. I'd love to see the sox sign JD up for 3-4 possibly even 5 years, and move him to LF and let Ryan take over in RF in 08. Fields isn't ready, and would leave KW without a backup plan.
