Do you like the Marte trade?
QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 02:40 PM) I am one of the people who voted for NO. Sure I like Rob Mackowiak as a utility player... but not at the price of Damaso Marte. I agree Damaso fell on rough times this year, but I don't think that trend will continue. Marte is a quality left handed reliever. I cringe at the thought of having Mike Myers on this team. Mike Myers blows. I would have much rather gone into this season with Marte and a guy like Jose Vizcaino or even Jose "manos" Valentin. My feelings could be soothed on this trade depending on who gets added to the pen... but I don't see this move as making our team better. You pretty much took the words out of my mouth JD

Dean says we cant win in Iraq
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 02:24 PM) I would agree with you on principle, but then there comes in that nasty question...what happens when there are 4-5 "genocides" of equal size happening everywhere on the planet at once, like there is at almost any given time (what was happening in Iraq in 2002 was no different from what is happening in probably a couple dozen other countries around the world.) If you choose to intervene, how do you decide where to intervene? It seems clear to me that you just can't intervene everywhere...there's simply not enough troops available to do it, nor is there enough money. I pointed out one case earlier...if we took all of the money spent on Iraq, you could probably save 30 million or more human lives in the next 10 years just by providing the entire world with clean, disease-free drinking water. That's the equivalent of the entire population of Iraq. If I have to choose between overthrowing Saddam and providing clean drinking water for the rest of mankind, clearly overthrowing Saddam would save a few lives, but it would also cost a huge number of lives, and it would come no where close to saving as many lives as providing clean drinking water would. So how do you decide which place to intervene? Supposedly that is what we pay the UN tons of money in dues for, but they were too worried about the wording of a resolution being "too harsh". I doubt that is much consolation to the dead people in the Sudan though.

Dean says we cant win in Iraq
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 01:48 PM) The question of course is..."How much should we 'step in'"? Should we invade the Sudan and spend $400 billion dollars to rebuild the place because there is a genocide going on there? Or pick any other "Genocide"? Can you name any place where the benefits of "stepping in" would be such as to justify that huge expenditure? I guess I tend to think that human life is priceless, especially when you times that times millions of people, but that is just me. I understand the need to quantify and detail everything for some, but for me millions of people dead simply because of a race, ethnicity, religion etc, is just screaming for someone to help them out. It becomes bigger than dollar signs and lost GDP.

Do you like the Marte trade?
QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 01:24 PM) 12 reliever for the 9th position player. Not all that earth shattering. It does make the team better by a little bit. Is it the missing piece to a 100 win season? Nah If Mackowiak won't help us get one more win this year, he is more worthless than Timo

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 12:47 PM) Do you guys think he will ever be able to put up decent big league numbers? Even in limited action last year, he gave up 2 home runs in 4 innings, and that still improved his career ERA. The guy got used 4 times in a month at the big league level because the Sox didn't want to use him in a pennant race. He never had less than 5 days between pitching outtings, which doesn't help a guy used to pitching every other day to stay in rythm at all, so for me it is kind of hard to put too much into 4 innings of pitching. I'd like to see the kid get a legitimate shot, if not here, somewhere else. He has proven what he needs to prove at AAA, the only thing left to see is if he is a major league pitcher or a AAAA guy.

Dean says we cant win in Iraq
QUOTE(Balance @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 12:35 PM) Like the ones we're ignoring in Darfur? QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 12:44 PM) Yes, like those. That's where I was going with that. There are millions upon millions upon millions (etc, etc) victims of genocide that we let die because the wars weren't good enough for us to fight. There are plenty of places in the last 60 years we should have stepped into, but didn't, including going on right now.

Getting Married in a Church
I wonder how much of the 50% divorce rate is caused by people who have multiple marriages, when they should never have been married in the first place. Personally I would like to see the number of first marriages that last, as opposed to all marriages. Think about it, one person getting 3 divorces matches up with 3 couples getting married and spending the rest of their lives together to make 50%.

Jeff is the next right hander in line for a spot in the Sox pen. As it stands now, he would probably open 2006 as the closer in Charlotte. If there are any injuries, I think he is next in line for the Sox.

Willie Harris, moron
QUOTE(Wanne @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 12:36 PM) Without knowing specifics...I think it may be a little premature to just say that. Didn't Willie have a family matter this past year? Maybe he had to provide more time for his daughter? Who knows. If it was just Willie saying, "Nah...I don't want/need to play this winter..." then yes...I'd tend to agree. If that's the case, you don't go to your boss looking for more responsibility, when you might not be able to handle what they ask of you.

Willie Harris, moron
He goes in and asks Kenny for more PT, but then doesn't listen when KW tells him how he can get it. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets shipped out soon.

Smoking Ban Passes in Chicago!
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 01:26 AM) What a concept -- personal choice of where to work and where to frequent...or better yet the owner of the establishment choosing to have it be smoking or not getting steamrolled in the name of a "We know better than you" uber-nanny. For f***'s sake, sometimes fun costs you. I don't smoke but I'm not anti-smokers. This actually should have been done by OSHA years ago. Why will they protect people like mill workers from bad air, but they won't protect groups like waiters/resses, bartenders, and servers? These people are working in an enviornment that has cancer causing agents in the air, and OSHA didn't do anything. I could care less about the consumers, as they can make their dollar vote, but when it comes down to workers, the US government has set the precedent that people should not have to choose between a paycheck and living, and there is no reason that should not continue here.

Dean says we cant win in Iraq
QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 02:20 AM) he is damn right we can't win that war. It has gotten worse since we went to Iraq. Where are the WMD's? Wait there were none. The last war worth fighting was World War 2. Tell that to all the genocide victims from around the world of the last 60 years...

Torture is justified at least sometimes......
Out of curiousity, where does the line end? Is it really different that a Fed Air Marshall shot and killed someone who had a bomb and seemed to be making actions that could be construed as threatening? INstead if someone knew someone who had a bomb that could blow up the city, as opposed to just having it on their person, we should just ask where it is? How is that different?

Christmas Under Attack.
QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Dec 7, 2005 -> 03:51 PM) Actually he included an entire Psalm in this years "holiday card." Reagan and Bush 41 used Merry Christmas. As did Carter, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman and Roosevelt. These cards are paid for with private money. The RNC pays for them, there'd be no lawsuit to file. Even with it being called "the White House" Christmas card the RNC pays for it?
