Dubai Ports selling out
QUOTE(mr_genius @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 07:34 PM) of course they want a vote. now, for their campaign comercials, than can add this vote to their "excellent" voting record on national security. btw, blocking this deal might have been a really bad idea. The UAE is really pissed off about this. They have already put off voting on a free trade agreement, and they are making noises about taking their investments somewhere else.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 07:33 PM) Undocumented Worker Statistics to chew on. More than one out of every four drywallers is an undocumented worker. (27%) More than one out of every four gardeners is an undocumented worker. (26%) More than one out of every five housekeepers is an undocumented worker. (22%) One out of every five construction workers is an undocumented worker. (20%) One out of every eight hotel industry workers is an undocumented worker. (13%) One out of every eight food manufacturing workers is an undocumented worker. (13%) One out of every ten food preparation workers is an undocumented worker. (11%) Source: Pew Hispanic Institute More than half of hispanic adult immigrants in this country less than 10 years make under $350 a week. And this backs up my point in a lot of respects. These are a lot of professions where there are plenty of good potentials for injury, and cash under the table payments which open the opportunity for cheating the workers out of the money they earned, and for the workers to send the money out of the country without having paid a penny of taxes.

Forward Rates
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 06:32 PM) Ya I was looking for the forwards. Gonna check out that CME spot and see if they have anything though. I know with Forwards they aren't institutionalized so its definately harder to find, but I figured somewhere there would be the data. Without having an account somewhere, you aren't really going to be able to find them. That's all done on bulletin boards (computers really) and it isn't published or recorded. Your best bet is to track the futures, but they have set expiration dates.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 04:43 PM) Ever think that maybe the government doesn't do enough about it because the economy makes more out of it than if it was properly regulated? Who cares? It doesn't make it right if the government profits off of it. It doesn't make it right if anyone profits off of it.

And who do you think is primarily paying for people who make less than minimum wage to go to a doctor for a job they shouldn't be working at in the first place, when they shouldn't be here in the the first place, when they are hurt because their employer didn't take any precautions to make them safe in the first place. My tax dollars should not be subsidizing an illegal activity. Period. We shouldn't be rewarding people for an illegal activity. By giving them access to all of our services without following any of our laws, or contributing to our tax base, you are stealing from every tax payer in this country. For every incentive you remove that rewards people for breaking the law, you force people to follow the laws and both pay people legal wages, and make sure that they are working in safe working places. Until the time where the employers have a reason to give a fair wage and a safe workplace, they are going to continue to abuse illegal aliens with their status as the ultimate threat.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 04:24 PM) Whoah, abortion? I'm gonna stick with this subject instead... Again, I would gladly be happy if such a program as some of you are describing was put in place. And my problem from the start has been with those who assist illegal immigrants being arrested, charged, jailed, etc...whether it be doctors, social workers, whatever...even common citizens who may unknowingly help an undocumented person. This new law itself is being protested because of that. This law is much for for the citrus grower in south Texas who knowingly goes to Brownsville and rounds up 20 Mexicians to help him pick his harvest for 1/10 the the cost, than it is for the doctor treating patients. Part of the reason so many people come here illegally is that they know they can get these jobs without going through the legal means. By making a disincentive for employers to commit an illegal activity, you go a long way towards stopping that illegal activity. The equivilent would be to arrest everyone who uses drugs, but to let all of the dealers and suppliers go, because they weren't actually using the drugs. They are still contributing to an illegal activity.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 04:19 PM) Not sure where you're going with that one... Using steroids is harmful. Working to provide for your life is not. It can be just as dangerous to do a job with no workplace protections in a job that isn't necesarily safe. These people have zero protections. OSHA doesn't make sure that they are using safe equiptment, are protected from poisonous chemicals, working a safe amount of hours etc. The incidents of workplace injury and death are way higher in places where there are no protections.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 03:38 PM) The get paid s***, for the most part. These aren't people making CEO salaries. :headshake Their contributions to the economy far outweigh whatever benefits they get. So do you people b**** about aid the U.S. gives to foreign countries as much as this? Somehow I think working in dangerous conditions for pennies on the dollar with no protections of anykind they are contributing more than they are taking out. There is nothing to make sure that these people are safe, or to make sure that they are even getting paid. They are here illegally and their very status is in danger if they try to stand up for themselves. You don't seem to get that making sure that everything is done legally is for their own protection as well as the protection of the American tax payer and employers... But I guess that arguement is only valid for abortion right?

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 03:31 PM) How exactly are your tax dollars assisting families in other countries? Easy. A very large amount of the money earned by undocumented workers gets sent home to their families in their countries of origin. Its why many people come here in the first place. At least with a guest worker program, these people pay into our tax system and contribute to the very programs that they want to be able to recieve. At this point that doesn't happen. Right now the dollars that should be going to help families in this country, are going out of the USA.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 03:12 PM) What is it, something like two years past their life expectancy? You're right, they really have kicked ass. It's getting kinda funny at this point, though. I hear the probes on both of them are pretty much cashed, so, it'll be kinda fun to see what happens. They are at some ridiculous multiple of their expected lifetime, and are still moving and transmitting tons of priceless information and pictures back to NASA. They have to be one of the most succesful programs in the history of US space activity.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 03:21 PM) stfu? You're obviously not even properly informed on the topic at hand so there's no use in discussing it if you're just going to turn it into an excuse to express your negative bias towards immigrants. It has nothing to do with immigrants. It has everything to do with ILLEGAL activity. If the US wants to set up a guest worker program and have people here legally to work that is great. That way the immigrants are protected from being taken advantage of and ensuring their rights, and my tax dollars aren't subsidizing illegal activity and families in other countries who don't pay taxes to the US.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 03:16 PM) The law in question effects legal residents and citizens also. Sure it does. There are 12 million illegal aliens here is the estimate now out of a population of 300 million people approximately. This law would mean that for every 15 people in the country, they would not have to support 1 person who was here illegally anymore for things such as education, welfare, health insurance etc. It is expensive enough to support the people we have hear legally, let alone to instantly increase the people able to get government support by another 7% or so.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 12:09 PM) Aside from Jim Miller being suspended...how exactly do we know that football has actually enforced those rules and not been complicit in the coverups? Like I said, we've got at least a couple major examples of guys in recent years who were juicing and who were never caught. A couple of them played in the Super Bowl. How exactly do we know that football hasn't been complicit? A ton of guys get suspended from football every year. If you want to make it into a vast right wing conspiracy with guys not getting suspended, I would imagine you would need more evidence than 3 guys who managed to cheat the system. And just because they cheated the system doesn't mean the sport was complicit in it. I mean come on, do you have evidence that every hockey player isn't an alien brought in from Alpha Centauri? Of course not. But in football we aren't seeing stories like we are in baseball. In baseball we have antecodes coming out about multiple owners who purposefully either kept ignorant, or acted like a problem didn't exsist with their own players. I dont' get why you would assume the worst right away. Football has had a strict set of guidelines and the harshest testing and suspension rates of anything outside of the olympics. It might not be perfect, and shock upon shock, some people are working harder to cheat the system, vs just working hard to become a better player, but that doesn't excuse the lack of action on the parts of MLB and the NBA.
