Offer Made For Randy Johnson
There is a thread in the sports bar that has a bunch of player notes in it. It said that RJ would be willing to waive his no trade, in exchange for a one year extention at about $16m. Would that change the trade views in anyones eyes?

Cell Phone question
All cell phone numbers are transferable now. They passed a law that guarenteed you can take your number with you. And if you just signed a contract, dig it out, and it will say on there somewhere how much it costs to buy out a contract. I can tell you it won't be cheap.

GM's Meeting
Thanks for closing this when you did Cheat. I went ahead and split out all of the arguement posts, and moved them elsewhere. If I missed any, PM me and let me know, and I will move them out as well. I am going to reopen this thread with this fair warning, I don't want to see anymore residual stuff from the early arguements. Just let it go, and go back to posting normally. Thanks guys

Offer Made For Randy Johnson
Wow. This is a tough one. On the one hand, this is a #1 starter we are talking about. This isn't a guy who could lead a team to the World Series, this is a guy who has led his team to a World Championship. When he is healthy, he is one of the best big game pitchers in all of baseball. It would be a steep price to pay, but do you go for it, or do you wait with the possibility of losing PK and Garland for nothing anyway. I gotta say, I would do this deal. You have got to try to seize the day. You have got to try to take this town back from the Cubs. You have got to try to win it all. Even if PK and Garland have breakouts, there is no guarentee that the Sox could have resigned them anyway, and the most important thing to me, is that we are getting the best player in the deal.

Bush to Push for huge tax overhaul
Actually even with exemptions, the poorest 40% would suffer a tax increase under this plan. Right now, because of the earned income credit, the poorest 20% are paying a negative 5.7% tax rate. All an exemption would do it stop you from paying taxes, all it would do is give them a 0% tax rate, which would be a 5.7% increase effectively. So it would hurt them. http://www.nationalreview.com/nrof_luskin/...00408170858.asp Also this has nothing to do with the corporate tax code. It would have nothing to do with prices imposed. Being a revenue nuetral proposition, it shouldn't have any affect on spending in theory.

Bush to Push for huge tax overhaul
Let the post fest begin! I have stated on many occasions that the personal tax system at its core is perfect. The problem is that it has been corrupted by special interest exemptions. There are too many deductions, and the great majority of them are utilized by the upper classes. If you plug the loopholes, you fix the tax code, it is that simple. The national sales tax would be a huge disaster. There is talk about an exemption for poverty, but I am not quite how you would do this? If the whole point is to streamline a government bureaucracy, then you lose that if you have an agency that exsists for poverty exemptions and the like. The national sales tax is also hugely regressive. You would start taxing people who are currently sitting with a negative tax rate. Unless there is somekind of minimum wage hike to match the loss in income, you could push a bunch of families into disaster. The first time it was mentioned I put up a large post about the regressive nature, and gave some numbers as an example, if anyone wants I can repost that. The flat tax is only a step away from the national sales tax, because at least it is taxing income, and not spending. This would have the effect of being a little more hard on rich because it taxes your money before savings and not after it. The poorest people spend all of their money, so a flat tax or national sales tax have the same effect on them. A flat tax is a definate improvement over the national sales tax because it is at least marginally more progressive, depending on how much savings is done after taxes. And to answer your question wino, it is supposed to be a revenue nuetral reform. In other words they want to collect the same amount of money, they just are trying to do it a different way. In theory it shouldn't have any effect on what the states are doing.

Well get on it!- Flying Under The Radar
A guy with very much the same demeanor as Jerry. This is a good signing for them. The Phillies are a team that could win the East. Especially with having a players manager after having Bowa.- Lockout Day 49 All-Star game cancelled
This season is done. They are cancelling games 45 days ahead of where they are now, so they are pretty much to the new year right now. If they make it to Christmas without fixing this, there is no hope. And given the fact that they aren't even talking right now, I don't see how they will iron all of this out in 6 weeks.- Red Sox make short offer to Pedro
Guys, this could be our #1 starter. If the Sox jump in and offer him 3 years... this could happen. KW has been saying all along that he wants a top flight guy. If you trade PK or CLee, and add in the money from Jose leaving, that would cover the salary slot of about $13 million. Intreaging to say the least.- Bears Giants game thread
