A change of managers will often shake up the team. Last year Tony Pena was called in at KC. I don't know the stats and whether or not they started winning right away, but they did seem to hustle more. The Sox need a fire under their butts. Now, if they really are a baaaaad team, it won't make much difference (see Detroit).

I forgot to add something else to my original post. Campbell was talking about Frank's habit of "jackknifing" on every inside pitch in kind of a condescending tone.
-
Next year we will draft higher.

I'm sure most of you were watching the game on ESPN, but I was in my car during the first inning and listened to the game on ESPN radio. I don't know if Kimm waved in DA or if he ran on his own. Anyway, when Frank came to bat, they were talking about the flaws in his swing and how his back side and right leg collapse at the wrong time. Then they quoted somebody on the Sox who requested his name not be mentioned, who said that "you can't tell Frank anything" and was "uncoachable." The Espn Radio announcers were Dave Campbell and one other guy.

He should be fired AND divorced.

I'm trying to think of when another pro sports team took so long to pull the trigger to fire the manager/coach when it was so obvious that that was what was called for. Cubs/Baylor perhaps? So I should rephrase the question to some team outside of Chicago.
-
No reason to hate Cameron. Those pitches that Stewart threw to him were so fat that any big leaguer would have hit them. It is called Batting Practice.
-
Can we catch Detroit?
-
Will he cry at the press conference that announces his firing?
-
Jerry just doesn't get it. Rex, sorry again if I got too personal.

Then the Barons no doubt had some decent coaching. Part of coaching is instructing, and part is correcting when you do something incorrectly. Just about everybody will occasionally do something fundamentally wrong sometime; it just needs to be corrected on the spot so it doesn't happen again. You know, like Little League. I doubt very much if JM corrects anybody when they do wrong.

Is this still Carlos Lee's breakout season? I sure hope so.
-
CWSOX: Do their outfielders hit the cut-off men, or do they throw over their heads like Daubach did last night.
-
You guys are right when you say Frank is hurting us in the three spot. I've been saying it for a long time. But, regardless of that argument, Frank simply is not going anywhere next year. No other team will take him and his contract. The Sox are stuck. Even if Frank somehow manages to hit .250 this year, which I strongly doubt, next year he will be older and slower. Having said all that, there is no one else on the team that can assume the DH role and be expected to hit better that .250. We are a s***ty offensive team. But I will say that Frank sure looks like he is in shape.

Has anyone noticed that whenever we get down by several runs, Hawk and DJ go into a rehearsed dialogue about how talented the Sox are? Seems like if we were so talented, we wouldn't be getting our ass kicked so much.

A bad team cannot hide a bad fielder; the ball just seems to find him. It's been that way for years. That's what happened to Daubach. If he played on the Yanks, he probably wouldn't have a hard play all night. Now we all know that he is not a good right fieder. Seems JM should have known beforehand. If he plays, it's gotta be first or left or DH. If JM wanted to rest Magglio, which is fine with me, then he should have put Rios out there. I've always liked Daubach, but he looked like a minor league outfielder Saturday night. Rex, I hope this wasn't too personal for you.

I wish Billy Beane would have called Boston instead of us when he wanted to unload Koch. But at least JM was using him in an appropriate role -- mop up duty.
-
Koch is less desirable now that he is guaranteed a lot of money through 2004. Not to mention his ERA/homers.

I know, this is really idle speculation and serves no useful purpose, but there have been ramblings about hiring Wally, Bobby, Larry, and others. So tonight, I am watching the Braves vs Diamondbacks on TV, and Arizona's first base coach is Robin Yount. Now there is a guy who played the game. Seems like an ideal manager candidate. I never heard him mentioned for any other manager post and don't know if he would even be interested.............. Plus he would be a good hitting coach. Paul Molitar has been mentioned as a candidate in Minnesota, but obviously it didn't work out. Nah, just idle speculation.
-
As I recall, they loved him in both Toronto and New York. His defense is right up there with Snow and Helton.
-
He actually threw some decent pitches in the 8th, but that home run he served to Cirillo looked pretty fat.
-
Signability is always key. Sox have been pretty good about signing their top picks, except for Bobby Seay.
-
In an idle moment during tonight's game, I looked up Olerud's lifetime stats: 300 career average, 1963 hits coming into tonight. Pretty solid career.

Ump missed a call at second, White comes in, gave up a walk and a couple of hits, 4 runs, 2 charged to Josh. Like someone said ahead of me, Stewart does nibble too much. Gives the perception of lack of confidence, and he really has trouble with righties.
