Impressive. Congratulations. While you're at it, run one for me while I eat a bag of Cheetos and then roll over on the couch and take a nap.

QUOTE(jheath160 @ May 10, 2007 -> 01:13 PM) It's not an easy decision, but until you've been a parent to a child with a disability, you may not fully understand their actions. I agree with that. And I think parents such as yourself are incredible in the dedication and love shown in caring for special needs family members. You don't know what you're made of until you are thrust into that situation I guess, but the lifetime of strength and compassion necessary to care for, protect and raise severely disabled children is an inspiring, awesome thing and I only hope it's something I am capable of. Welcome to SoxTalk, btw.

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ May 10, 2007 -> 11:55 AM) Best. Bush Quote. Ever. http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/bushvid.../bushfoolme.htm Third best imo. The second best is the one in my sig, and the best one is this one that suggests that on paper anyway W is at least as smart as the average Texas highschooler: "As governor of Texas, I have set high standards for our public schools, and I have met those standards." --CNN online chat, Aug. 30, 2000

QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 9, 2007 -> 10:51 PM) From what I've seen thus far this season, I look forward to the next 5 years of John Danks' career. They are going to be a blast. The second game he threw this season I'm sitting on the couch and watching with my 7-year old son. After a couple of impressive innings I let my age show and said, "Y'know, I really like this Danks kid." My boy thought it was funny that i was calling the adult ballplayer on TV a kid, but he's run with it and it's become his inside joke so far all season. Before a game he'll ask who's pitching and if i tell him it's Danks he looks me in the eye and says, "Y'know Dad, I really like that Kid." So. . . great job tonight, Kid!

This is simultaneously a textbook slippery slope sort of case and also a situation where our ever-improving ability to perform medical 'miracles' greatly outpaces our ability to deal with the bioethical dilemmas that are created. Mired in the bioethecist's impasse, I am unable to attain any clarity regarding the parents' decision. But this is very much like the case a few months ago where a similarly profoundly disabled boy was given a procedure that would permanently stunt his growth so that he would remain small enough that the parents would be able to always pick up and transfer the kid. You can understand the parents' rationale in that situation but at the same time, yeearrgh that is an extreme liberty to take with another human being. And the problem is that there are limitless conceivable combinations of profound disability, parental commitment, parental ability to provide care, monetary considerations, institutional care potential, legal issues, etc., with each of these factors falling out along its own continuum. In the end, I think we can only deal with these from a legal standpoint because we are not capable of universally making the necessary ethical determinations. If someone is found to have broken the law in applying such "treatments" on those in their care, then the matter should be dealt with appropriately within the legal setting. And in doing so, if it can be determined that unique extenuating circumstances caused a law to be broken when a guardian was truly doing what he/she thought was in the best interest of their child, then that should positively affect prosecution and sentencing outcomes for the guardian.

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ May 5, 2007 -> 10:29 AM) Gotta love the NRA. I was floored when I read that. There's debate as to whether the VT massacre guy should have been able to purchase a gun because of past mental history, but if you are a suspected terrorist, the NRA's got your back. It boggles the mind.

If you were to riff over that first chord progression or build a minor key melody on, the natural choice selection 99% of the time would be yer' standby Am pentatonic scale (5th fret position). You could also construct in C because Am is the relative minor of C (they share the same key signature with no sharps or flats but have a different tonic or starting note to the scale). For the next progression I'd start with the same scales, but because the relative minor is de-emphaszed there, I'd probably work with C major for that section. So yeah, the standard approach to these chords would probably be to use the relative minor (Am) for the first section, and then work in C major for for the second part. And now for the song virus. I dare you to not hear Toto's "Africa" in you head as you play the first 3/4 of sequence 2. The E/Em busts you out of there, but, yeah, it's Toto. Or some arena rock era Heart. I keed, I keed. Congrats on taking on the instrument.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 4, 2007 -> 01:02 PM) Although the source (The Politico) is a vastly less than reliable rag, if by some chance they're right on this article, then the Dems are taking exactly the right approach if they push this bill IMO. This was mentioned on NPR this morning as well so I think it's credible.

Of course Snopes is having a hard time actually finding news stories or police reports corroborating this one. Lots of minute details in the story for there to have been no legitimate newswire story to authenticate it or give any location specifics narrower than a state. I mean, maybe the stereotypical dirtball caricature gun-toting illegals don't rate a news story when they get killed, but what about poor old David Burien (age 50 from Somewhere, Montanna)? Don't you think his fatal stabbing would rate a news story or two? If this story wasn't made up, I mean.
