QUOTE(AbeFroman @ Oct 3, 2006 -> 03:51 PM) There's only one: That acoustic ending to "Layla" by Clapton's Derek and the Dominos. Just like that scene in goodfellas Jim Gordon, the Derek and the Dominoes drummer, wrote that beautiful bit of music. Then a few years laterhe started hearing voices in his head and he murdered his mother to try to get them to stop. Yep. . . pretty, pretty bit of music that.

Congressman quits over sexual harrassment

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2006 -> 02:54 PM) That's not what I was asking. The family asked for privacy, and I wanted to know if a formal investigation and/or censure would have been a matter of public knowledge. If they could have been doing it in private that changes things vs if it would have had to be a piece of public record. The argument that the need to respect the privacy of one page and his family is frustrating, because it ignores the obligation that Congress – and in this case particularly the House leadership – has to protect ALL the pages whose care their families have entrusted to them. -

Well, it seems the Conservative desires to not "gay bash" in all of this were short-lived indeed. Some of this bile from conservative commentators is just horrific: -
Neil Peart is a friggin' machine. It's impossible not be in awe of his technical brilliance, imo. Geddy and Alex hold their own as well and i think as a unit they work well together, but I don't have the musical manlove for them that i do for Neil. Beyond that, yeah, it's what you like or don't like but their musicianship is unquestionable. The same can't be said for Dylan (as far as technical proficiency), who is at the same time one of the most gifted songwriters of any generation. Meaningless comparison.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 3, 2006 -> 01:15 PM) Depending on how the next 60 or 70 years treats you, maybe the flip side of bicycle race would work I like a gal with some stuffing in her cushions. . .

Some time this month - probably around mid-month, the number of Americans will surpass 300 million.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Oct 3, 2006 -> 01:05 PM) Nah, ya should do "Don't Stop Me Now". Or depending on how you go, "Sheer Heart Attack". "Who Wants to Live Forever?" too obvious a choice?? Or just not a big Highlander fan?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2006 -> 12:52 PM) And in this case, the Washington Times. And Ronald Reagan's eldest son, and Bey Buchanan. Couple of rabid moonbat lefties if ever I saw 'em. -
I want several songs from Warren Zevon's final, focking brilliant album The Wind to be played. I'm getting dusted so there won't be a casket, but I want the entrance song to be "Dirty Life & Times" I want "Keep Me In Your Heart" and maybe "Please Stay" in the eulogy portion. Please Stay is just soooo sad though, and so maybe it will get nixed. The exit selections have to include a non-Zevon homage to the uplifting "part two" New Orleans jazz band street procession songs - probably a revved up version of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" (yeah, yeah, a spiritual song at the atheists funeral. maybe I'll get struck by lightning for it ). But that should segue into "The Rest of the Night" as my family and friends head out for what had better be a hell of a party. Among a bunch of other songs, the Dubs' version of Finnegan's Wake will be played and sung very loud at the reception/after party - no doubt fueled by plenty of Guinness and Jameson's. (The Wind is one of the most brilliant, poignent things I've ever heard it. If you haven't heard it, please do yourself a favor and check it out. I know LCR loves it as well. Don't know that he knows the Zevon-Gonzo connnection and all the stuff about Hunter sending Warren chapters of Skinny Dip as soon as he fineshed writing them, but not getting tthe last instalment to him before he died. Yeah, he probably knows all that, but it just makes Warren's passing that much sadder.)

QUOTE(dmbjeff @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 02:52 PM) And whats funny is that we still had 90 wins and this season was disappointing. That was good for 6th best record in all of baseball. In just about any other year, this was a playoff team. I try to keep that in mind as i stew over what might have been this year. One thing's for sure though, all that talk about the eaqsy life in a weak AL Central had sure better be dried up now. And speaking of. . . A cannot bear the thought of the Twins getting anywhere when it shoulda been us, so GO OAKLAND!! Detroit, on the other hand, I don't mind the thought of them going deep into October nearly as much. And now, on throough October and into the Winter of My Discontent.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 01:36 PM) I think we really have a problem with anger control in this country. True, but I'd be happier if the angry people didn't have guns.

Wow. I thought this was going to be a joke when I saw the unlikely thread title. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 2, 2006 -> 01:09 PM) How many school shootings have there been in the last few weeks? Seems like every time I go by MSNBC or CNN "School shooting" is the breaking news. Add today's incident and I think we are up to speed. Not going to derail this thread, but I think that among many other societal problems, we have a gun control problem in this country, folks.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 1, 2006 -> 10:42 AM) And indications are from Fla. that everyone knew this guy was a pedophile for a long time. I'm finding out that is true as well, as noted earlier. I had no idea. He always seemed slimey, and he's been on the wrong side of two land conservation battles I've been periherally involved in, but I figured his slimey was just average elected official cheat-on-your-wide kind of slimey. Edit to add: The comment of mine above about cheating on a spouse was generic and directed at all elected slime who do it. Foley is actually single, so at least his actions are not adulturous, regardless of what else they may be. -

Foley's fondness for the young guys was a surprise to me but apparently not to some others down here. My supervisor's husband said Foley had borderline stalked a male student intern at my institution about eight years ago when he was still in local politics. -
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 26, 2006 -> 10:57 PM) I watched Shawshank for the first time in my life tonight. What the f*** have I been doing for the last 19+ years? Now one of my favorite movies of all time, up with The Green Mile.....nothing like Stephen King novels set in 1930 prisons.... Heh, I KNEW you'd like that when you said Green Mile was a favorite. I think Shawshank is hands down the better of the two.

Well, I put this sad turn of events squarely on the shoulders of all y'all who didn't pony up to help Save Screech's House when you had the chance. And how the hell did I miss a boxing match between Screech and Horseshack?!!

QUOTE(shipps @ Sep 26, 2006 -> 02:29 PM) The r&r hall is just a novelty nowadays.i wouldnt be surprised if Kid rock is in it. True Fact: In a wacky career-move moment, FlaSoxxJim recently sent in an application for the position of Education Director for the R&R HoF. Sadly, I have not been contacted for an interview yet.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Sep 26, 2006 -> 09:33 AM) Petty was good until he got all "folky". When he was all about Rock, I liked him. It was inevitable that he would get all folkey with Mike Campbell pretty much being a Roger McGuinn clone. I really think that worked well in the early Heartbreakers stuff (big fan), but it became too easy and formulaic to just rehash the old Byrds sound rather than write material on par with with the first couple of Heartbreakers releases. I don't hate all the newer stuff. But what I've heard off the most recent album sure sounds recycled and lifeless to me.
