Reagan's election in 1980 is what freed the hostages from Iran. So a vote for Reagan was really playing into the terrorist's hands, right? The disinflation in 1981-1982 was engineered by the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Volcker. If you look at history, you'd see he was a Carter appointee. The average rate of unemployment under Reagan was higher than the average rate of unemployment under Clinton. Both started with unemployment rates around 7.5%. The Greatest Bull Market in history started in 1994 actually. Came crashing down quite recently. Reagan's economic growth during his Presidency was slower than Truman, Kennedy/Johnson, and Clinton. It was however at 32% total economic growth, higher than Nixon/Ford or Eisenhower. So I guess that would make him the best of the Republicans. Reagan deserves a lot of credit for his squeeze on the Soviet Union, hastening its eventual collapse. However at the same time, Reagan negotiated with Iran, arming them. Reagan was friends with Saddam Hussein. Reagan did embargo everything to Nicaragua, including Humanitarian items like medicine and meddled in Central American civil wars. Reagan also ran scared from the Beirut embassy bombing. A move which Bin Laden cites as a reason why terror against the US can be effective. Let's not look at things with rose colored glasses. Like all presidents, Reagan did quite a bit right, but we was no perfect president. In some cases his policies sewed the seeds for the battles we're fighting no less astutely today.

I worked in Oldies. I hated Dion with every inch of my being. Abraham, Martin and John maybe? Ew. And that was the best one we played. I used to make fun of really bad 70s pop. There was Yummy Yummy Yummy, In the Ghetto... all those.

My question is why the f*** didn't Ozzie keep Shingo out there? They were saying on ESPN how bad Zero wanted Ichiro and would have had his chance in the ninth... the dude after Ichiro was hitting .600 against Koch career... Shingo only threw 8 pitches in the 8th... could have at least got another 2/3 of an inning out of him. He's a proven closer in Japan, has an ERA well under 2.00 in the Majors and oughta be getting more late inning work in these kind of situations. Period. We bring up #5 starters every week and give up on them after three innings of work, but can't give up on Botch after a year and a half? Please.

I noticed this when Jose went on the DL too. The offensive chemistry changes and we get stuck in a doldrum for a few games. We'll score 2 or 3 runs a game for a week and then get used to the situation and start blasting again.

I got hit by a car on my bike in Kansas once. I was fine though

Yeah, you can tolerate and hate. But denying the equal rights of cohabitating couples because they happen to be same sex is not toleration. America has not had a history of tolerating homosexuality. In many states, the act itself was considered illegal until last year. And since a case had to be made to overturn the law, in some cases - those laws were ENFORCED. Oh yeah, where I live, its still legal to be fired for suspicion of f**gotry. Which might explain why I had to shut the closet door on myself a while ago. I support Gay Marriage. Being the board's official Gaybo, you prolly already knew that. You prolly already knew that I couldnt let the thread die off without my 2 cents. That being said, I don't think that the Federal Government has the right to force an individual state to allow gay marriages in their state. However, the Federal Government has the duty to give same sex married couples the same rights as heterosexual couples, unless the definition of marriage changes to one which is recognized for the sole purpose of procreation. That would mean a lotta straight people couldnt get married either. Not every gay guy is gonna get married or even wants to. Its not about a gay invasion, but rather about equality and the ability to live without fear.

Civil Union is a nebulous term. Lemme put it to you this way, that's separate but (not always) equal. Unfortunately, thats not an acceptable doctrine to the United States Supreme Court. See Brown v. Board of Education. I'm not trying to compare the gay rights movement to the 1960s civil rights movement - but i will say this - the civil unions argument follows the same logic as saying... "The drinking fountain water is the same for the black and white fountain, so why do we need to allow blacks to drink from both?"

Here's a thought about this study. Since I don't live in Chicago, I can't answer it. But wouldnt it make sense that the couple of neighborhoods that make Boystown the place it is, with the reputation it has, be filled with people who created that reputation? If 3 - 10 percent of the population, depending on who you ask, is gay - wouldn't that mean that just maybe gay people live outside that area, and may lead a lifestyle as normal as you or I? Oh wait, that's right, I DO. I hear stories all the time from straight guys about one night stands and sleeping with people whose names they don't know and all these other experiences I'd never dream about doing. I think those numbers ARE shocking though, all being said. I just wonder how accurate they are. Measuring that might be fairly difficult, even today, from a methodology standpoint.

I wouldn't call him a great president. But he is someone who served our country and for that he deserves our respect and condolences.

People protested Condi Rice at MSU too, but she was smart enough to stay away from the politics.

Personally, I say WinoDJ - President for Life! Gorditas for everyone! Ribbie Rubarb the official US mascots!

The Dems would need to hold on to Congress for that to happen. Given our recent history for the level of crime needed to impeach - the last four years may indeed be higher than the bar used against the Clintons. Personally, I hope this doesn't get that far. Impeachment is bad for the nation in all but the most urgent of situations. Let's hope that administration change can happen via the ballotbox instead.... BTW: It's Cheney that stands the best chance of impeachment in my book anyway.

I'd agree. When people want more gas than we got, the price goes up simply said. There isn't enough refining capacity to meet need in the US right now AND the pumping capacity worldwide isn't producing much more than we already consume every day. Couple that with Shell earlier this year admitting they overestimated what they have in their reserves for pumping and Saudi Arabia admitting that poor management of their largest oil fields over the past 20 years has placed it in decline. The solutions to savings at the pump seem simple to me. Walk more. Drive less when you don't have to. Buy cars that get better mileage. The price of gas may not go down, but your out of pocket costs will.

Paulie gets the walk! Men on 1 and 2, 1 out, 3-0 SOX.

Sorry. I ran out of deodorant :puke -
I saw the Sox play at the Cell THREE weeks ago?

Hey, if we're competitive and doing well, I love everyone in the organization Seriously though, its nice to see a GM being aggressive like KW, with motivated managers in the clubhouse like Ozzie and Kenny making good choices too, its the difference between an 83 win season and a 90 win season.

White Sox @ Indians Game Thread

Crooked numbers are my favorite numbers when the Sox come up to bat. -
5 runs has been able to do it. He's only gotten one win in the last four decisions, but he left with a win that Marte blew seemingly every time.

Dude, what happened to you sucks. And its another unfortunate nail in the coffin of fan friendliness at the Cell. They have 15 security guards on the field and people who buy upper deck seats can't get to the main concourse but the ushers and security never seem to get close to doing their jobs with the fans. I sat behind home plate in the Premium Lower Box for the doubleheader. My ticket was never checked once. I sat in the Bleachers a couple years ago, and security was much better. This was before people were jumping into the field. Three people almost got into it but were still jawing and within 60 seconds, 6 security guards were there and calmed the situation. The Cell really is starting to live up to its name. Think about it, 100 level people go through two or three security gates and then cant get protection at their seat. Just like that OZ show or something.
-
Its fine to limit access to small areas of the park for people paying way too much money to see a game. That's different. If they want security, bring back the damn Andy Frain ushers.
-
Made it to the doubleheader on Saturday... and I had a blast. Always good to see the Sox play, but there are a few things that bugged me. I understand the security issues, but the Cell does kind of have a lockdown atmosphere lately. The not being able to enter the main 100 level concourse has gotta be a bummer to the casual fan who paid the 16 dollars for his Saturday Upper Deck ticket. Part of what I love about going to see a game is getting to walk around the park - not being able to access a good half of the park because of this rule is a bit obnoxious. Is this really fan friendly? A family of four going to a game on a Saturday in April or early May is spending 64 dollars for Upper Deck seats. Plus 16 dollars for parking. Hot Dog and a coke each - another 30 dollars. And you can't access over half the park. If I was a casual fan, I'd go without the expense and mess to be honest. I hope the new marketing folks realize what a mistake that is. Not to hammer the point again but a little perspective here. The Pistons are in the NBA playoffs. Cheap seats for the Palace are still around 10 bucks from the Ticket Window
