QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 26, 2014 -> 09:00 AM) One of those BS's is a joke. In 2 of the 3 he didn't give up a earned run. I assume the joke one you talk about is the one where Cleto started the inning, but the other one if Abreu catches the ball at 1B they don't lose that ball either(if the inning plays out the same way). I'm certainly not trying to say he hasn't been scary though.

I got a chuckle outta this.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 03:10 PM) Agreed, but I do wonder if he'd pick up 2-3 mph of velocity in a closing situation? If not, you have to wonder if he's injured. Fastball is way down today. Someone posted earlier saying the gun was 2-3 mphs off which seems to be true. Scherzer, Q, Cleto, Webb have all been slower than usual.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 02:20 PM) That was a s***ty at bat for sure but I'd rather see a full year of Semien and see what he can do. Maybe he'll drop to .150 maybe he'll hit .300. Nobody knows. Beckham, however, we know. He's not going to magicially become good at his age. Knowing you as a big Dunn hater, what are thoughts on his 30 Ks in under 100 ABs? At what point does it become clear he needs more time in the minors?

Yaaaaa, everybody is cherry picking!! It's fun right?? Over the last 14 days(That's 12 games) he's hitting .226 with K/BB ratio of 17/2. That .226 number includes a day where he went 4-6. I see no harm in sending him down to work on some things. Give Beckham a month, if he's cold, buzz killer Beckham than you brink Marcus back up. If he's the pre all star Beckham you play him with hopes of trading at the deadline. It's really that simple for me. I know they're what, 11-11? But are we already giving up on the rebuild?? This is a mere rebuilding move, nothing more.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 02:09 AM) Why are we cherry picking stats? Why don't we just throw out his first 2 games and see what his numbers look like? And hurray #beckhamexcuses. The guy hasn't put up an ops over .700 since 2009, why the hell should I believe he's going to do so now? Marcus is no where near a finished product but he's doing a damn fine job adjusting to the majors and there's really no reason for me to believe that he's already not a better player than Gordon. C'mon Rowand, you should know by now that's all I do is cherry pick. It's a rebuilding year, Beckham can be on a short leash. If he fails for a few weeks then you call it a day and bring Marcus back, if he comes out and hits like he did before the injury(call it an excuse if you must) you might be able to snag a half way decent prospect. I'm not saying it's an absolute must that they should start him, just from a rebuilding standpoint it makes some sense. Esp since, like you said, Marcus isn't a finished product. He's not showing that same plate discipline he showed in the minors and he's striking out in about a 3rd of his ABs. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 01:34 AM) Marcus Semien!! If he loses his starting job to Gordon Beckham of all people there is something wrong with sports. If Ventura allows this to happen I lose a lot of respect for him. I flip flop a lot on this issue but Semien has been the heart and soul of this team. For this team to be .500 it's a miracle and Semien can't be demoted. It's just wrong. s***, let Beckham play third. The heart and soul of this team is a guy who's hitting .234/.280/.394? He's had 2 good games where he's driven in 8 runs, in his other 19 he has 5. His last 10 games he's struck out 13 times and walked none. To repeat what's been said quite a bit around these parts, pre all star break and pre injury last year Beckham hit .335/.357/.443. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 01:17 AM) Nevertheless, 5 blown saves in 8 opportunities....the key/end result...was basically the same as 2011 and 2012 at the start of those two seasons. (Just realized this) I had no idea blown saves get counted in the 7th an 8th innings, I thought it was strictly the 9th??? 1 of the blown saves was an injured Nate Jones in the 7th, and another was Bely in the 8th....Then when talking Lindstrom blown saves 2 of his 3 were "tough luck" BS for him. In 1 he had to clean up Cletos mess, then another the inning started with an Abreu error, if the rest of that inning plays out the same way it's a save. -

QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 12:29 AM) How much input does the pitching coach typically have on deciding who the closer is? Depends on the pitching coach? Does coop get media questions about who the closer will be or is that only Robin? I can't remember the last time we had a closer issue, and I've never thought about it. 2012 started off wayyyyy worse. Santiago started out as closer, then they went to Thornton, and 5 blown saves later they finally went with Reed. The first 10 innings split between those first 2 resulted in 23 hits, 4 walks, 11 ERs and 6 HRs. Lindstroms first 10 innings have resulted in 11 hits, 4 walks, 3 ERs and 0 HRs. -

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 09:42 PM) Lol, Robin thinks Webb is his long guy. Robin is too clueless to realize Webb should close. With our SP exiting games early so often this year I have no problem with them using Webb in a long man type role to bridge the gap....Beats throwing out the other options for 1 inning a piece if they're lucky. Belisario has started to come around lately in multiple inning outings so maybe soon they can utilize him in that role while moving Webb to closer and Lindstrom to set up. He doesn't strike people out like Jenks did, but he gives off the same nail biting vibe as Bobby so often did. Both guys got/get by by not giving up the long ball so teams really gotta string together some hits to get to him. -
Do you think Paulie would retire midseason?
2nd_city_saint787 replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sox have faced 5 LH SPs so far, PK got the start in 3 of those games. One of the other games was in Colorado(No DH and Abreu had himself a pretty swell game with 2 HRs). The other game, which was against Robbie Ross, is the only game where I question why he didn't start. Dunn was coming off a 3-4 game so it may have been tough to take him out of the lineup. So sans that 1 game PK has been utilized exactly like we all expected and that has been reported...A platoon starter who will play against LH starters. -
2014 NFL Draft Thread

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 11:12 AM) Why on earth would San Fran give up a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for the 14th pick? I understand the draft pick value, but that's a ton to give up in a draft that is absolutely loaded with talent. Their biggest needs moving forward are probably a rush linebacker because Aldon Smith is a psycho and defensive end because Justin Smith is getting older. They can satisfy both of those needs later in the draft. Frankly, I think EVERYONE wants to trade down in this draft. EDIT: The Niners could use a receiver too, but again, they can get that later in the draft. I agree that it sounds unrealistic, but I'm just going by the draft pick value chart. The values match up 1100(Bears) vs 1036(SF) -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 08:02 AM) No the Bears should not draft a 1st round QB. They should also not draft a 2nd round QB. If a team wants to trade up and gives the Bears a fair offer where they wind up with ~2 2nd rounders, they should absolutely do that. This is a deep enough draft where they ought to be able to find 2 starters (Safety and DT, for example) in 3 second round picks. If the Bears targeted a QB they liked in the 3rd round or after, I'd have zero issues with that. Agreed. San Fran has a plethora of picks, I'd love to see them be the trade partners and they give up the 30th pick, a 2nd and a 3rd(works out on the value scale). Like you said this draft is said to be really deep, I've heard people throw out quotes like "There's 1st round talent in the 2nd and 2nd round talent in the 4th". If they can get 6 picks in those first 4 rounds that'd be incredible (since I'm bored) They could then go with something sexy like.... 1-30- Timmy Jernigan DT 2-51- Ed Reynolds FS 2-61- Deone Bucannon SS 3-77- Pierre Desir CB 3-82- Anthony Johnson DT 4-117- Aaron Murray/Logan Thomas/Taj Boyd
