QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 12:54 AM) Your care free attitude can be commendable. I wish I wasn't so worried about getting laid off and losing health care, etc. For some reason as you age, sometimes attitudes change. I used to be like you. I made "s*** Happens" T-Shirts my senior year in printing and graphic arts class, 6 years later I still live by those 2 words.

QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 12:15 AM) I think you're accepting a singular idea of what "best" is. I'm not going to say you're wrong, per se, because for instance I have the same hobby as you (improving our physiques, etc). Nonetheless, I think you need to realize that he isn't saying "I want to be less than the best." He is saying "my idea of 'best me' is different from yours and therefore some of the activities/goals you use to achieve your ideal person are not applicable to my conception of the 'best me.'" You're accepting a somewhat vague, unspoken, but non-compulsory notion of what the best way to be is. Since it is not compulsory, saint is not compelled to be exactly the way that social forces have constructed the ideal man. Okay, enough homework while Soxtalking Yet again, excellent post There are 9 million people in the US that are unemployed and at least another couple million who are making less than 10 dollars an hour who would be ecstatic to make 11 dollars an hour. as I've said countless times for me money doesn't equal happiness. Lol honestly to me 11 dollars an hour is a lot of money. Best time of my life I was making 8 an hour, working less than 40 hours a week and I had 460 dollars in bills. I had like 50 bucks a week spending money and that was all I needed to be happy. I wouldn't know what to do with myself making 23 an hour, I suppose it'd be cool. I could travel or something

QUOTE (Reddy @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 12:08 AM) get in shape that pain will be gone. dude, at the end of the day, it sounds like you're happy right where you are. and if that's the case, then that's great. i'm the type of person who wants to be the best version of myself i can be - but i know not everyone's as crazy as me. and more power to you if you really are happy. i just don't wanna look back on my death bed and wish I'd done it differently ya know? I've been big all my life, these aches and pains popped up when I started playing rugby. I've been away from the game for a year and a half and it's still there. I'm happy with the track I'm on, I paid money for certification to become a security guard in IL so the next step is to get a job in that field right? I'm not saying thats what I'll be forever but for right now thats the path I'm taking. After I take care of all the debt I'm in I may look into college, or saving up for a food truck and maybe later a restaurant.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 12:00 AM) Yeah, but that's not enough money to make a living someday if you want to raise a family. You better marry a woman who has a great job or is from wealth. Also does that job even pay benefits? At some point you are gonna need benefits. s*** if you are 25 and playing basketball and wrench a knee you are gonna need some bucks to pay for it. I don't plan on having kids, or getting into any kind of serious relationship any time soon so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I want me a simple woman, if we have a roof of our own over our head and each other then I'm happy, and I she would be to. Some do, my last security gig you got benefits after a year of service. There's a thing called a free clinic if something serious happens before I get benefits. I played rugby for 2 years with no insurance. I'm fearless lol jkjk QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 12:01 AM) Would you be interested in any health care careers? They are still thriving despite the legislation and some even only need an associate's degree. Just a thought. If I'm gonna do anything that involves me going to college it's going to be for journalism...Though it that wouldn't be a bad idea seeing as I live a block away from a hospital, it'd be nice to get in there with gas prices the way they are.

QUOTE (G&T @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 07:07 PM) Yeah, I remember that, but I wouldn't write anything off because of that. I think, though I'm not positive, you can't carry a gun with a felony on your record...I'd have to look into that again. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 09:37 PM) I agree with everything Rock and Jake said, and saint please don't take my words the wrong way I'm simply trying to bring out the best from you, do not settle, strive to be the best kind of speech. Naw man you're all good, I appreciate what you're trying to do. Like I said though, I don't smoke to look cool, fit in, or drown away my problems, I genuinely just like the feeling of being high, it's cloud 9 for me. I also have chronic neck and back pain, if weed was legal in IN or I moved to a state it was this wouldn't even be an issue...well only because I had some card that magically makes the drug alright.
-
QUOTE (G&T @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 07:20 PM) Any thought of becoming a cop? I have a petty felony (assisting a criminal, when I was 18) on my record, I believe that would restrict me. This has been my problem with many up scale jobs.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 04:55 PM) Exactly. $11/hr is pretty awful. I'm making $23/hr working as a cater waiter. Requires the same skills as being a security guard( none) and pays twice as much. Set higher goals for yourself dude. What are you afraid of? Lol I'm not afraid of s***, I like working in security. I'm a simple man. Money doesn't buy me happiness. Following my favorite sports team is what brings me happiness. Smokin ganj and watching comedies bring me happiness. Laughing is free and blissful. I don't need a fancy car, a big house or a fancy phone to make me happy, those things are overrated.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 04:29 PM) Why is it "safer" than alcohol? Just curious. Also how old are you? You seem pretty sharp. Why are you setting limits to low paying job careers? What is a security job? Stay up all night at a company guarding something or what? http://poet83.hubpages.com/hub/Three-Simpl...er-Than-Alcohol I'm 25, with no college experience, what are these high paying careers I should be shooting for. (Serious question I'd love some ideas). 11 dollars to start off is not bad for a guy like me. My last security job (where I was team leader) was at a condo building downtown. I sat at a desk for the most part and just conversed with the tenants of the building, which I like. Despite what the last day or 2 of posts from me may lead you to believe I'm a people person, and I enjoy talking to these random people and helping them when needed. I responded to any kind of incidents in the building. I felt like I got respect from all the tenants and all my co workers and I loved that.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 02:40 PM) I think she is serious about moving on and he can't get her back even tho she said she would have accepted a proposal had he offered one at one time. That means you will be smoking again. Look, now that you gave it up, that's the hard part. Just say no for a couple years and see where your life is headed. You are thru the hardest part; don't start smoking again. It might alter your motivation. Yup. My choice. If I get me a security job I like making decent money then why not. I enjoy it, it makes everything better. I'd be lying if I said I haven't missed it these past few weeks. When I start working and going to this boxing club, I'll use it as an award after a hard days work...Like I did when I was playing rugby. It should be legal, its much safer than alcohol I really don't see what the problem is with it.

QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 01:21 PM) optimists unite Together we can rid the world of negativity! QUOTE (Reddy @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 01:35 PM) i mean... sort of. lol your post was promoting cautious, tempered, tip-toeing optimism. i'm not sure that works for most people in the long run. I think the optimists unite post stems from our overall optimistic posts throughout the board.

QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 12:44 PM) saint, I think you're on the right track. You want to work hard, you've thought a lot about your life, you have a vision of what you want. Go for it. I'd suggest that you know exactly what your priorities are and the order in which they matter to you...and then frequently quiz yourself on why they are what they are and why there are ordered that way. Mix the short term and the long term. Right now you're setting some short term aside (weed) to get the long term stuff in order. Sweet. You will probably have plenty of time for short term pleasures once you get a new job or whatever else you want to do. I certainly wouldn't say that you should slave away and abstain yourself from all of life's pleasures just for such and so thing unless it REALLY meant that much to you. I imagine that you can be a pretty happy guy with your gig as a security guard, even if you would also like to own a restaurant. You have to find a balance between going towards that longer term, more risky goal (like owning a business) and not wasting your whole life on it and missing out on all the fun. Only you can make these judgments. @weed discussion I had the chance to live with my brother for a while this summer for reasons not particularly important. He loves to smoke weed. He does it almost daily, if not multiple times daily. He makes 100k/year managing a retail store. He usually smokes before work. He usually smokes after work. He is also a rising star in his company. I see him do some dumb s*** because of weed, but it really isn't at tremendous peril to his livelihood. Eating up all his food or not having a six pack anymore or not joining a book club, etc are worthy concessions in his estimation and that's cool with him. Personally, I'd rather occupy my time with other things than weed...but I'm not out-earning him or necessarily contributing better to society. Hell, I blow more money on buying craft beers than he does on weed (not an alcoholic though, sorry). Anyways, yeah I just think weed is something that can be incorporated into your life if you do it right. This message board is far and away the best special interest board I frequent for topics that are anything other than the special interest. Well said Jake, you've always been my favorite poster. (mostly for your use of THIS IS REAL)

To be honest, once I pass a drug test I may be back. I'm a pot head, lots of people are, including like you said a lot of successful people. I don't do it because it made me look cool in high school or because I wanna follow some crowd, I do it because I enjoy it. I feel its not even a big issue anymore...legalize it already! stimulate the economy! Ron Paul 2016!

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 12:42 AM) Sounds like a bunch of winners. With a name like justBLAZE I'm not sure if this is sarcasm? I didnt mean literally ALL their money on it but to go with the context of what I said they certainly wouldn't loan me more than like 20 bucks. I'm already smoking these guys herbs for free and I'm gonna ask for money??? They spend about $140 of the $500-550 they make a week. They're not bad guys, we talked sports, played video games, and smoked a lil ganj. Nothin wrong with that.

I don't think his has been mentioned yet but here's a thought. Would you trade Rios for Arod @ the 13 mill Rios would have been owed? Would the Yankees? They look to be giving Swisher the boot too so they could be in the market for a replacement. It'd be a lot easier to fill a hole in the OF. Let's get all roided up sign Melky too.

QUOTE (RZZZA @ Oct 16, 2012 -> 10:58 PM) Who will I be happier to see gone from Chicago: J'Marcus Webb or Carlos Boozer? Wow, thats a tough one... Blasphemy RZ. Some fan you are.

lol there's been a lot said. I feel like I'm writing a biography over here. It's kept me occupied in this slow time for soxtalk so I'm not gonna complain. It's been fun getting my sorry ass story out there.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 17, 2012 -> 01:13 PM) Heh I was going to start with, I dont want to be preachy, but obviously if I think its necessary to start a post like that a soap box is being brought out. Im not going to judge on how you life your life. I dont care if you do drugs or any of that. But if you recognize something is holding you back, you have to either stop doing it or overcome it. Ive seen people quit smoking so that they can pass a drug test, etc. If that is what is holding you back, find another way to get high that they dont test for, I suggest old fashioned drinking and if you hate to drink, try and get a script from a dr for some anxiety pills etc. Good luck, its tough but sounds like you are taking the first step, which is recognizing you want something different. You missed the part where I've said I'm 3 weeks clean and have been drinking a gallon of water a day. It takes about a month to get it out of your system so I'm well on my way.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 17, 2012 -> 12:58 PM) The right personality and a lot of luck. I know a couple of people that have gotten into that network marketing stuff. It's certainly not for everyone. If you're the type of person that can sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman in white gloves, then you might be successful. But not many people are. FWIW, they do have business loans if you are really serious about starting your own restaurant. You just need a solid business plan. But IIRC, the success rate of non-franchised restaurants is really, really low. I've done the beachbody, network marketing deal and it wasn't for me....I lost money doing it. I also have terrible credit (a bank over draft that turned into $1,500, a credit card that turned into $2,300, and I had an 06 Pontiac G6 that got repoed with 11k on it) I have a solid plan but with my credit the only way I'm getting a restaurant is if I work for it.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Oct 17, 2012 -> 12:25 PM) of course it's not easy! did i say it was easy? it's hard as f***. but the difference between the people who are successful and the people who aren't, is that they're willing to do that work. for example. there's a woman named Dani Johnson who is now a network marketing trainer for companies similar to Beachbody. When she was 19 she was boke and homeless. Her husband drained her bank account, maxed out her credit cards and then jumped ship. She was living out of a car. She got into network marketing and failed miserably, just like you did. At 21 she somehow found a way to scrap together and save enough money to go to this training seminar for network marketing. When she left that seminar, she made $2,000 in the next 4 days. She made $50K in the next couple months, and two years later, by the time she was 23, she made her first million. What did she have that you don't? Nothing. In fact, she was WORSE off than you, but because she was willing to work hard, and because she had aspirations, she was able to completely change her life and become a multi-millionaire. That was in the early 90s. She now teaches others how to do what she did. Can you talk? Can you walk? Can you pick up a phone or sit at a computer? Then you can have the life you WANT instead of the life you think you're stuck with. That's what I'm doing right now, man. I have a degree in Theatre. But I'm going to make an extra 6-10K this year doing my network marketing business. Next year will be more, and more, and more till I don't have to work my s***ty catering job. You're unemployed so you've got the time - now just start doing something with it! If you want to learn HOW to do all these things, I can point you to some awesome reading. But at the end of the day, you have to want it yourself. Question - how would your life be better if you owned your own restaurant than it is right now? Find out how she did the bolded and I'll believe it. If she was homeless, and jobless, what'd she do that I can do? Thats what I wanna know. Nothings going to be handed to me, if I wanna own a restaurant, its gonna be from saving money from my security job that once I'm clean I will no doubt get. Lol I dont see whats wrong with taking that path, I mean 10-11 dollars to start isn't BAD. I mean even if I don't end up saving the money for a restaurant, there's money to be made in security. One of the guys I worked with was making 17 an hour. It took him 10 years at the same job but still if I'm making 17 an hour at 35 thats not a bad chunk of change. Oh and P.S. I hate infomercials =p

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 16, 2012 -> 11:49 PM) Debunked? Lol I love speaking in comedic absolutes as much as the next guy but ya gotta expect retorts for such silliness. I just hope some are provided. Dude was blown away by every fastball that mattered all year! One exception: that 2 homer game end of the year. One exception IMO. Choke city any other time my eyes watched. It was painful. KW only blunder in 10 years. Explain what you mean by blunder. If you wanna call it a blunder because he wasn't the player he was the previous years then so be it but he certainly wasn't a bad sign. Pre all-in it was clear the Sox needed a LH power hitting DH. KW got that. His previous 2 years he averaged .264/.378/.911 with 38 Hr and 104 RBI. It was the perfect signing by KW, it just hasn't paid off. -
QUOTE (Reddy @ Oct 17, 2012 -> 12:07 AM) <!--quoteo(post=2716655:date=Oct 16, 2012 -> 12:20 PM:name=2nd_city_saint787)-->QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Oct 16, 2012 -> 12:20 PM) <!--quotec-->Yes, being a security guard is what I wanna be. I don't have the money to go to college to be a sports journalist, I don't have the money to start my own restaurant, and right now I don't have the money to train to be a pro wrestler. Security, and potentially pro wrestling might be it for me and I'd be happy with that. I'm joining boxing classes, who knows maybe I have some potential there and can do security and box. Maybe next season I can get scouted for rugby, I was told I had potential by a guy who was indeed scouted and now is getting paid to play overseas. Like I said earlier, money doesnt buy me happiness. I've been poor all my life, so I've learned to be happy without all the finer things in life. I am what I am. If I can save enough money to start my own restaurant or food truck then great, thatd be awesome! If not I'm fine with that. And as far as p90x goes, you knew ahead of time I wasnt really interested, I just spur of the moment agreed. I wanna do some heavy lifting and get stacked like that rugby player i sent you. The boxing club I'm joining has a gym inside so I can do that, and use the boxing as my cardio. I'm a physical guy, boxing is something that will keep me into it. When I was working I still went bowling, I went to sox games, I did it all, was it still tainted? yes. but I still did it. I never said I wasn't, I just said it was tainted and would bring back memories. Once I start working and find someone to replace that hole, those feelings will be washed away....In the 2 years I haven't had that girl to fill that hole. I didn't quit coaching, I didnt have the money to continue. I don't have anyone helping me, anything I do I do it myself. you just proved my point. I said that people in your position tend to convince themselves they're happy with mediocre, even though - if they COULD - they'd rather be doing something else. Like opening a restaurant or a food truck. the "i don't have money" excuse is THE biggest excuse people make - that and "i don't have time" but guess what? it's still an excuse. Here's an example. Few years down the road, you've got a kid. That kid gets sick. Doctor says there's a cure, but it will cost you $4,000. If you don't get this cure, your kid's gonna die. So you're left with a choice: will you throw up your arms and say "oh well?" or will you do EVERYTHING YOU CAN to scrape together the money? Will you ask your family? Will you ask your friends? Will you hold a fundraiser? The answer is obvious. Of COURSE you'd do anything to get that $4,000. See? Money's an excuse. If you want something badly enough, there's a way to get it. Take a listen: It may be an excuse but its a valid excuse. I've got no family to borrow from, all the family members I know are somewhat poor. All my friends spend their money on weed and house/apartment bills...A fundraiser might be feasible for a sick child, but no ones gonna give me money to start a restaurant. I don't know about you guys but nothing in my life has ever been given to me. I had a job at 16, and since then the only thing thats been given to me was a roof over my head and when I'm not working, food on my plate. The only way I'm getting a restaurant is if I work my "mediocre" security guard (I know people who would kill for a 11 dollar an hour job) and save up an do it myself. It's not as easy as you wanna make it sound, esp for a guy like me.

Lol I'm not looking for relationship advise here. I said I was done with relationships and its kinda snowballed from there. I don't mind talking about my life here, I'm an open book. Like I said all my friends are stoners so I don't really have the opportunity to open up like this with those guys.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 16, 2012 -> 03:23 PM) I think this has the potential to ruin Ryback. To early IMO. Punk beats Ryback, then his mystique goes away immediately If he puts on a good show, it doesn't have to ruin him. If he looks terrible and Punk wins (which he better) then ya, he could be ruined. Punk can put Ryback over without him winning. I hope he displays some kind or wrestling ability, so far he's just looked like a squash machine.
