  1. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 02:08 PM) The first time I watched 'Life Is Beautiful', I really enjoyed it. The second time it came across as so far fetched that it was almost comical. Never had such a swing in reaction to a film before. I have a similar relationship with Forrest Gump. First Viewing - Teary eyed; Four Stars! Second viewing - dry eyes; three stars third viewing - "This movie is kind of corny" ...last viewing - "take your box of chocolates and go f*** yourself, Forrest!" Maybe it wasn't that extreme but I did grow to like Forrest less and less each time I would watch the film. I still can' believe it won best picture over Shawshank Redemption.
  2. QUOTE (Soxy @ Oct 23, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) True story: I was like 15 or 16 when that came out, so I went with all my little friends. I thought it was just awful. So overwrought and just annoying. I kept sighing and making comments--I had some bruises from my friends by the end. That almost made me cry. Anyway, movies that made me cry (I admit I am a movie crybaby, I rarely cry other times, but whatever. Don't you judge me!): Wall-E Life is Beautiful (for about 3 weeks afterward too) The Diving Bell and the Butterfly It's a Wonderful Life Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Harvey Vertigo (when he loses her the 2nd time) The Pride of the Yankees Sense and Sensibility Field of Dreams Forrest Gump The Lives of Others Iris (I think that's what it is called, the Iris Murdoch biography) Good Will Hunting Whale Rider Love Actually Pan's Labyrinth La Orfeanato (spelling?) Finding Neverland To Kill a Mockingbird Casablanca Philadelphia An Affair to Remember On the Waterfront Any movie involving a dog dying Cool Hand Luke Mystic River (again, for weeks) That is an impressive list of films you've seen (especially Lives of Others, which was emotionally draining). Ever see City of God (set in slums of Rio) or Cinema Paradiso? Both excellent in their own right. Cinema Paradiso should also come with box of Kleenex. Great call on Titanic, btw. I have a theory that if EVERYONE loves a movie it is guaranteed suck. For that reason, I have never seen Titanic and never will. Almost kept me from reading the Da Vinci Code as well. Wish I had resisted temptation there. I have had plenty of films that I watched and shed tears but none as consistently as as Bang the Drum Slowly and Eight Men Out. BTDS is a no brainer for why. EMO, however, there is a scene where Buck Weaver is talking to a couple of kids from the neighborhood and lights up like a kid relating his love for the game. As a baseball fan, you understand what he is talking about and it could get you choked up in its own right. As a Sox fan you know he will never play the game again and how rough his life was after he was banned. It is tough to keep it together any time I watch that. The Shawshank Redemption also used to do it for me until TBS started showing it every four hours. You do get desensitized after a while.
  3. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 23, 2008 -> 01:51 PM) I must be the only one on this board that's ever seen this movie. Lot of youngsters here. That movie always makes me lose it. It is hilarious and depressing all rolled into one.
  4. QUOTE (Steff @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 08:52 PM) "Let's give 'em the finger", which was overheard and not spoken directly into a tv camera in the hallway of the stadium in New Orleans... and "World f***ing champs" screamed on a stage into a bank of cameras in a public place where there were many children in attendance... not so comparable, IMO. If Paul Konerko had done this I would bet high that Jerry would have cut his slow ass loose. You know deep down you love Konerko.
  5. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 12:29 AM) In terms of his lack of hitting ability, his mediocre at best CF defense, his salary owed, and the talent traded to acquire him, Swisher in 2008 was the biggest disappointment I have seen on this team ever. I honestly cannot recall a bigger flop than last year's Nick Swisher. Todd Ritchie only played every five days but he could definitely give Swish a run for that title. Brian Kingman's dubious honor was at risk long before Mike Maroth and the atrocious 2003 Tigers ended his time in the spotlight. I agree Swish sucked but at least he hit that slam against the Cubs. I can not think of one redeeming quality in Todd Ritchie. The worst part is Fogg, Wells, and even Sean Lowe had pretty good trade value at the time no matter how the rest of their careers panned out.
  6. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 14, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) I think Anderson's partied with a couple spanish-looking chicks as well. you mean mayor liga latina "honeys"?
  7. QUOTE (rangercal @ Oct 14, 2008 -> 10:59 AM) what about '93? '93 was cool but the '83 team was the first Chicago team in the postseason since the 1959 world series. They won 99 games and absolutely dominated the league in the second half of the regular season, winning the old AL West by 20 games or so. Too bad they had trouble with the Orioles all season. If they had gotten past the ALCS, I think they would have ended their WS drought 22 years earlier. Phillies were decent but I think the Sox were better. That season solidified me as a White Sox fan.
  8. Sure, why not? Can we retire '83 as well?
  9. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 11:28 PM) Continuing to go in the right direction, slowly but surely. Down 30+ pounds for the year, and within 9 pounds of mytarget weight. I think I may have herniated myself somewhere in the last coupld of months, because I have abdominal discomfort that I've not eenable to relieve through diet or medicine. I'd speed up the process and attack my flabbiness if I could add back more exercise, but with teh way my abs feel already from this mistery ailment i know I'd probably really injure myself. Not to scare you, but please go get that checked asap. It may just be muscular, but if it feels at all like heartburn, it could be something worse. A friend of mine had similar symptoms and ended up needing angioplasty. I doubt that is the case with you, but we Sox fans need to look out for each other so better safe than sorry. There just aren't enough of us to go around.
  10. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 09:43 AM) I was at the last 5 home Sox games and all were great. I attended 22 games this year so I think I may know a couple of things about being a fan. I had two moms from Orland question my fandom on Sunday because I was not standing up and cheering on the 1-2 pitch with nobody out in the first inning. They had no problem with me talking to their kids all game about baseball though. After the game they both told me and the guy I was with that we are not real fans. I looked at her and told her that she has no business telling me how to be a fan or how to act. I was excited and happy but was not going to stand and cheer every pitch. On Monday I had people all around yelling at me to artifically get excited during the game. Look, I get up and cheer at pivotal points during the game. 2 strikes with two out and runners on. Tying run at the plate, stuff liek that. I am a typical pessimistic Sox fan. I rationalized in July when the Sox played in Texas and KC that this team was not that good. I echo Fathom's statement that the July losses hurt more than Monday's I am not sure why but I think last Tuesday was all I needed from this team for this year. Drunk sheep. That is all those people questioning you as a fan are. Cheer when you feel like it. Let the rest of the lemmings scream on every pitch. It sounds like you can tell an easy fly from a home run and can sense when a ball will be fair or foul no matter where you sit. People forget that baseball is a cerebral game and not every pitch should be cheered. I know this changes a bit in the playoffs, but these people sound obnoxious. Don't let it bother you.
  11. QUOTE (moneyman6544 @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 09:34 AM) two guys I work with just said that they give up on the Cubs and will probably be looking for another Chicago team to cheer on next year. The Chicago Fire has to be excited about this turn of events.
  12. QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Oct 7, 2008 -> 11:11 AM) I miss Ribbie and Rhubarb Ditto that. They were a lot of fun. I am not sure how many converts the Sox will get. It would have been great to see what this team could do if Quentin, Contreras, and Crede were all healthy for the playoffs, not to mention Linebrink in midseason form. Too few guys had to do too much to get in and they really did not have the horses or energy to go far at that point. I think combining the Cubs collapse with a more sustained Sox playoff run could have been the straw that broke the Camel's back with the fans up north. They are an angry and salty bunch that have been made to look like stooges once again. They expected so much and got so little with the resounding thud that ended their season. Maybe that collapse will be enough to cause them to either give up baseball altogether or at least their allegiance to the Cubs. Booze and sex are still what drives attendance up north, though so I will believe the exodus when I see it. If only the Sox neighborhood had more things to do before and after the game.
  13. Thanks for all the tips. I think I have some good material to work with. I appreciate the help.
  14. QUOTE (buckweaver @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 01:34 PM) My friend...he's 3-1/2! Find the t-shirt that has his favorite/chosen player's name and number on the back. put a little eye black on him along with his Sox hat, tell him he's the cutest thing you've ever seen, take plenty of pictures...then go trick-or-treating. No need for a $150 replica jersey that he'll outgrow by opening day. And as an at-home dad for nearly 15 years now I absolutely promise you that there will be no difference in his experience between the two! Have fun. -Barry That is the direction I was heading. Also remembered that the local little league has a lot of teams so I might be able to borrow some game pants and jersey for the "white sox" team. He was going to be dearth vader and then the light went on this morning and he said he wanted to be AJ. I was ecstatic. Thanks for the tip.
  15. QUOTE (rangercal @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 01:34 PM) 1 over-sized white Sock with eye holes . your welcome Not bad. Thanks for the tip.
  16. QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 01:33 PM) What's the subject? I'll do the damned test for you and write the paper. Can I write about the game? Better yet, why not scan the test and post it here for us all to have a go at it. Who knows, maybe we can help improve the grade.
  17. QUOTE (WinningUgly85 @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 12:04 PM) I know this is probably really corny but I have a take home test and a paper to write for tomorrow and I know if I go to the game I will be pulling an all nighter. But on the other hand this is probably one hell of an experience that I do not want to pass up. Please help me decide. What's the subject? I'll do the damned test for you and write the paper. Can I write about the game?
  18. My 3.5 year old son went to the game with me yesterday and decided he wants to be a white sox player for Halloween. In particular either AJ, Alexei or Carlos Quentin. Gym shoes, white sox and a hat are pretty easy, but the jersey and pants are a little tougher proposition cost-wise. Any insight on how I can do this without breaking the bank? There was not much on ebay so I figured I would try here for ideas or suggestions. Thanks for your help.
  19. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Oct 3, 2008 -> 10:05 AM) I was fortunate enough to be at both Game 4 in Houston and the tiebreaker on Tuesday. Obviously, nothing can top being present for a World Series Championship. But because of the home surroundings and crowd, the special ambiance of the Blackout, and the absolute do or die nature of the contest, Game 163 came very, very close. Ditto. Crede's 2 home run game late in 2005 season v. Cleveland was also a very special game for me.
  20. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Oct 3, 2008 -> 08:48 AM) He's not even in the organization anymore. "This guy's dead!" "Cross him off, then!"
  21. QUOTE (Reddy @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 04:30 PM) I. HATE. COWBELLS. brooks should come up with something ridiculous to fire back Cowpies?
  22. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 09:26 AM) Their number one pick would be yummy. Too bad the Sox would still make the selection rather than the Twins picking for the Sox based on the input of Twins scouts.
  23. QUOTE (Steff @ Oct 1, 2008 -> 10:45 AM) I asked about the #'s you texted me and I would say the TBS gun was juiced by a couple. The guys sitting behind me screamed that they saw 98 in the park. It's not that far of a reach, IMO. I saw 96, 97 and 98 at the park as well. Did not check every pitch, though.
