QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 10:51 PM) Pretty awesome moment with Bonds almost homering in his last AB with the Giants. He gave Peavy a big hug after the play, as Peavy sure seemed to be giving him every chance to go out with a homer. How cool -- he almost homered!!!!!!!!!!

Official Hate for the Milwaukee Brewers Thread
Gregory Pratt replied to fathom's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 09:53 PM) It's really great that the Brewers veterans have stepped up to take the pressure off of the young guys. If I see one more thread saying we should add Bill Hall or Geoff Jenkins, I might snap. Who called for GJ? -
Let's go Phillies. Let's go Rockies.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 08:11 PM) Pretty much. Born is a stretch, but for as long as I can remember. Why do you ask? Friends? Met someone pretty cool from Wheaton. Best person I've met in awhile. I'm fairly familiar with Wheaton, but not much. And I guess I'd never noticed that you're from Wheaton before. Miguel Cabrera is very, very good.
-
Were you born-and-raised in Wheaton?
-
I'll take Dayton Moore.

Well-played Steve and Buffalo. No well-played for Raines even though his joke was a top two joke in this thread.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 05:32 PM) Care to elaborate? Pitching is a big concern and so are a bunch of their other players. Yes, they've got Reyes, Wright and Milledge, but I'm not yet entirely sold on Milledge and that pitching staff ain't so hot.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 12:07 PM) That doesn't change the fact that the Padres have control of him over the next 2 years. If he's dealt, it will be after 2008, but with two years left of him, it'd be a mistake to deal him now, and Kevin Towers absolutely knows that. Can you tell me which pieces exactly? I looked up and down their AAA and AA rosters, and found like 6 potential prospects based on numbers, and 3 of those were relievers. I don't know scouting reports nor do I know names of some of their more talented players, so I'm a bit curious. But the Padres not trading Peavy stops the Braves from trading for Peavy. I can see it after next year; not this year. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Santana were dealt this offseason for reasons already explained. I'm not going to get into their prospects. Go to Talkingchop.com if you're interested. Besides that, I'm done with this speculatory, "Mets trade for Santana!" speculation. Even if they did, the Mets don't look that good to me going forward. They've got some aging guys and I just don't feel good about their roster going into the future.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 03:46 PM) You mean a guy like Kemp? his career .303/.337/.487 seems pretty Torii-like. And the guy hit 340/400/535 above A ball. Did I mention he turned 23 only a couple of days ago? Hunter's defense is vastly overstated anymore. Ever since his injury in '05, he's struggled. Last year he rated as a below average CFer to anyone who was watching objectively. (Remember the '06 playoffs?) And while he's regained some of his form, he's not the defender he once was. Above average, maybe, but a guy who going forward is going to become a corner outfielder rather quickly. You can keep predicting doom for the Twins, but I'd swap teams/farm systems with them in a heartbeat even with the financial constraints. They're upwardly mobile, while the White Sox have locked in contracts to guys like Contreras, Dye, Konerko, and Vazquez all on the wrong side of 30. One team is a few shrewd moves, and maybe a year of waiting for guys to develop, away from competing for division titles. The other is a dumb signing or two away from becoming the Orioles.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 11:28 AM) If Cubs fans jumped off the Empire State Building, would YOU have to jump off the Empire State Building???? To me, it's irrelevant what some (and let's emphasize SOME) Cubs fans did during the Sox title run. This is about a good-natured 3rd grade "rally". My daughter's school had White Sox Day when the Sox got in the playoffs, and I'm sure some kids wore Cubs stuff that day. I'd want the bar set higher for my child, that's all. Do you take your child to the cake shop and tell them it's his birthday every couple of weeks?

Misadventures of Board Game
Gregory Pratt replied to Swingandalongonetoleft's topic in The Diamond Club
I like it when umpires are characters. Like in the good old days. I don't like it when they toss a knuckler for headhunting with his knuckler, though. -
I don't think the comparison's very good but I agree with the sentiment.

I wore a Cubs shirt Monday and don't know why.

Trading Fields and/or Danks for a star
Gregory Pratt replied to NCsoxfan's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
It's fair value. We need to speak with the commissh to let us trade for a FA but I'm sure he'll get it done. He is good friends with JR, and he knows how much a playoff push would mean to the Chicago White Sox fans! -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 10:59 AM) Don't know if it's racism or not, not sure I care, but this had to be fairly amusing. CNN's Rick Sanchez yesterday. Was it racist? I think so. It has some very nasty undertones to it. "Oh, the black people aren't acting like thugs -- whoa, imagine that!" Is he racist? I don't think so. and I replied to you because that Sanchez quote is f***ing hilarious.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 11:05 AM) Let him decide. If he wants to fit in and have a day out of the school uniform, get a cheap Cub t-shirt and remember that it's not war or religion, it's a game. If he doesn't want to wear a Cub shirt, send him to school in his regular school clothes and, if questioned, have him tell them he's a Sox fan and that he doesn't want to wear Cub stuff. I personally think sending him in Sox stuff would be a jerk move. Yeah, I agree. Dude's in the third grade!

Trading Fields and/or Danks for a star
Gregory Pratt replied to NCsoxfan's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 10:22 AM) This team needs more cheap production up and down the lineup, and Fields is part of that. The only way he couldn't is if Larry Beinfest lost his sanity for a moment and traded Miggy for DLS, Fields, and Gio. That would be absolutely hilarious though. And the name Carl Crawford is far too popular around here. I wouldn't put it against Fields to put together a better offensive season next season than Crawford. Haha. I wouldn't put it past Fields to suck terribly next year. I'm not sure he will. I don't know what he'll do. But let's not go nuts and start hypothesizing. I wouldn't put it past Gavin Floyd to win the Cy Young award next year...but strangers things...have...happened? -
I want Barry Bonds in the Cell
Gregory Pratt replied to Punch and Judy Garland's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 22, 2007 -> 08:09 AM) You know exactly what he means. no, actually, I don't. Bonds is bad for clubhouses, he's a huge injury risk, he's old. Sure, he brings a lot of walks but there's no spot for him, his defense is shady and his presence casts a shadow over the entire organization that Ozzie doesn't want with good reason. Does Bonds = winning? In his case, no, I don't think it does, especially not for the price. Bonds = potential contribution, old age, injuries, slow feet, bad defense, no spot on the roster, 15+million, media attacks and clubhouse unpleasantries. He couldn't even get along with Dusty Baker. -
Trading Fields and/or Danks for a star
Gregory Pratt replied to NCsoxfan's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(NCsoxfan @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 09:46 AM) We have all been shocked in the past by what KW does. Is it out of the question that he could move Danks and/or Fields this offseason if an All Star or near all star player was available? Nothing surprises me anymore, that is why I brought up the idea of trading Jenks a few months back. So if we could get a big enough haul, would it be worth it for the chance to compete for another title with guys like Konerko/Thome/Dye?? What about Fields and Danks for Carl Crawford? Add Rowand or Hunter to the mix would bring a pretty potent outfield (Dye, Crawford, Hunter/Rowand) Have I lost my mind, or am I being semi-realistic? I don't think the Rays would do Fields and Danks for Crawford. -
Goddamnit, I woke up to see that the Padres and Rockies had both won. Which is good enough, I guess, but I was really hoping Atlanta would pull it out. If not, I guess the Padres are okay, and the Rockies are awesome, so I guess it's okay.
-
Peavy himself was talking about how he's probably going to be traded because the Padres can't afford him long-term. No, they've still got plenty of chips to deal. You threw out, "What's stopping Minaya from trading for Santana?" and I said, "Nothing stops the Braves from trading for Peavy." Both are true.
-
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 25, 2007 -> 10:05 PM) What's honestly stopping Minaya from offering half of his minor league system for Johan? If I had one surprise to throw out this offseason, it's Johan getting traded. With a new GM in place, and the Twins not being able to develop a hitter (outside of Morneau, Mauer, and Cuddyer...they're a small payroll organization, so they need more than that), I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see Minnesota take a package absolutely loaded with talent from a team willing to give it for Johan and to then start the rebuilding. I'd put it at about 75% that the Twins shop him, 10% they get an offer they're willing to make, and 9.5% that the offer comes from the Mets. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I could easily see such a scenario playing out. It's very possible that the Mets trade for Santana. It's equally possible that the Braves trade for Jake Peavy. If the Mets trade for Santana, then I'll re-evaluate but otherwise, the Braves should really be very good next year, especially with Glavine.

Pena also knocked AJ's helmet off.
