3rd time around? We should start teeing off on Bannister soon.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 12:15 PM) What about Branyan? I would call him a last resort, but maybe the Mariners would move him now that they have Smoak. fwiw, I've read on Tribe boards that Branyan was absolutely hated in the clubhouse.

How about we trade Linebrink to the Phillies for Raul Ibanez + cash? The Phils are looking to unload him. And then DFA Kotsay.

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/os-n...,0,143821.story Stan Van Gundy likes that the Orlando Magic have the right to match any offer sheet restricted free agent SG J.J. Redick could sign with another team. Because Redick has played four consecutive seasons with the Magic, he's considered a "Bird" free agent, meaning the Magic can pay him up to a maximum salary even though they are well above the NBA salary cap. Right now, the Magic seem inclined to bring back Redick even though it would plunge them further into the luxury tax. "I'm not worried about what J.J. might get from somebody," Van Gundy said Wednesday between games of the AirTran Airways Pro Summer League at RDV Sportsplex. "That would simply leave us with a decision, but the ball rests in our court. We'll just have to make the decision when the time comes. Our intention is — and I know that from talking to [General Manager] Otis [smith] — our intention is to match. "Now, if he gets a max offer — $17 million a year — I don't know," Van Gundy added, a smile on his face. "If somebody gives him, you know, $1.8 million, he won't take it. So, somewhere in-between there is the number. But we go in with the intention that we're going to match." Last summer, the Magic surprised many people when they matched the Dallas Mavericks' five-year, $34 million offer sheet to backup C Marcin Gortat. "We valued Marsh," Van Gundy said. "We value J.J. And we know we get the final say."

As long as we're signing Utah Jazz players, I wouldn't mind us picking up Wesley Matthews too.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 12:25 PM) A five year deal for Lee will blow up in their face. Doesn't matter when you're printing money.

Completely agree with the last few posts. It was totally classless of Lebron not to have given Gilbert a heads up on his decision. What Lebron did to the Cavs is the basketball equivalent of getting dumped by your girlfriend on the Jerry Springer show.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 08:33 PM) I should have known the Peavy injury was going to happen! My Peavy bobblehead came in the mail with it's arm broken off. LOL. I love that. From now on any Peavy bobblehead should just come with detachable arms.

What a week since free agency opened. This has been one of the best threads I've ever read on any board. Thanks to all involved.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 08:52 PM) I'm guessing a Lee trade would have to include Beckham. Something like Beckham + Flowers. Not for a rental

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 08:52 PM) He has another announcement? Please be that you're mom is getting re-married! Another announcement? Who's watching it right now besides people in Miami?

I predict the Reds end up with him.

QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 06:15 PM) Its just for long relief after Pena was stretched on Tuesday Yep. It's good roster management. Bring up the reliever until you need the starter. Then swap them out. Gives you more coverage out of one roster spot.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 07:19 AM) Morel played SS again, for whatever that's worth. Makes sense. When a 3B doesn't hit for huge power, their ability to play >1 position improves their odds of making a big league roster.

So, let's get this straight... His tax bills are going to Chicago. He supposedly traveled to Miami to meet with Riley. And his announcement tonight is broadcast from a New York suburb, 9 minutes from the Knicks' training facility. Sounds like he's playing everybody to build up drama for tonight's show.

He's not brutal in the field. In fact, he looks better than I expected given all the posts people have been making ripping him. He's no GG candidate, but has good hands and a cannon arm. The other stuff can be learned.

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/07/0...ican-dream.html Good article from today's Charlotte newspaper about Viciedo.

Double steal here?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 02:35 PM) The system is thin as it is. There are a lot of guys I like, but only Hudson that I have a death grip on. The rest, even Flowers, I might be willing to part with for Dunn. Depending on the package in total. I agree, but I'd hope we'd have some belief we could extend Dunn beyond this year.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 02:33 PM) I hate the world. I hope you heeded my warning about hiding guns and sharp instruments.

If we purge our system for a rental, I am going to take a vacation from the board.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 01:47 PM) He will be doing his interview from Greenwich, CT. Which isn't quite New York, but pretty darn close. I almost took a job there in the early 90's. A very very nice (and rich) suburb of New York city. Interesting place to broadcast his choice of team from. I'd feel a whole lot better if he chose to broadcast from Lake Forest.

If I was Lebron, I'd MUCH rather go with the Nets than the Knicks. I don't think most people realize the potential power Prokhorov brings to the table in terms of helping market players globally. IMO, if LBJ wants to be a billionaire, the Nets are his quickest path there.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 12:30 PM) IF they sign LeBron, the only thing that would get in their way would be injury. Or the Lakers making a move to add another star.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 11:59 PM) Believe me, I love baseball enough to rough it out. Gimmee a break. You're 19 and never had a real job. I've got shoes older than you. Nice to be idealistic and say what you'd think you'd do. But the commitment some of these minor leaguers make to hang in there for years that you blow off as being so easy is HUGE.
