1:51am: If the two sides were to agree on a deal, the second prospect heading to the D'Backs would also be a pitcher, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter).

QUOTE (beautox @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 08:06 PM) competent, was too harsh, a tick below average. Yep. A tick below average GG Hall of Fame defensive player.

QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 01:17 PM) I know it'll sound silly, but I've secretly wanted Roy Oswalt and Roy Halladay to be on the same team for a long time. So, who else is on your formerly secret mancrush team?
-
Does the Astros willingness to part with Oswalt suggest that they might be more likely to part with Berkman too?

Given the choice between Bautista and Scott, I'd take Scott.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 29, 2010 -> 09:44 AM) He's worth a compensation pick, although I don't know if I'd offer him arbitration. I would. Because he won't take it. A left-handed starter on the open market in the offseason sets off a feeding frenzy. Regardless of his fly-ball percentage, etc.

Reed has played several games at 1B for Charlotte so far. I find that interesting.

Don't worry Shipps. You only have to worry about this until you get married. Because your wife will make you leave your penis at home when you go out anyway.

Excellent work on the FutureSox summary Dan. -
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 28, 2010 -> 12:41 PM) They don't have Santeliz listed properly either. He's been on the DL since the 17th, he probably blew out his elbow. That would suck. Can you dig and find out more about this?

Cleveland fans are throwing a party.

Note to self: Must not get drawn into another Shipps penis thread.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jul 28, 2010 -> 01:07 PM) I too refuse to acknowledge it. Law is full of snark and fans of basically every team feel that he's anti their team. Law picks certain players to love and others to hate. And his snark level in describing guys is relatively high. I'll use Gavin Floyd as one example. If you go back and search Law comments about him from year to year, he's always finding some new way to bash him. Many more examples like that... Makes for interesting reading sometimes, but not necessarily objective or good player evaluations. I think he fits very well in the job he has now, writing sensationalist articles that attract eyeballs for ESPN. But, in terms of his track record, for evaluating talent... frankly, I think he sucks.

Marcum is making $850,000 this year and has 2 arb years left before free agency. What is the motivation for the Blue Jays to trade him unless the Twins are willing to overpay? Most major league teams do NOT give up cheap young quality starters unless they get a ransom for them.

Moving Liney to the Mets makes sense to me. Even if we don't get anything back. We'd likely call up Carlos Torres, and have him pitch long relief. Then move Pena back to a 7th-inning type role. We can't use Linebrink in the 7th inning now... Not in close games anyway. So, the net result would be an improvement, IMO. Of course, if we could find someone who will offer us additional players for him too that would be great. But I don't see that happening.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 06:27 PM) Brandon Hynick. More for Westrbook than you'd like, not sure about Millwood. Yes. I think Westbrook could be had for a reasonable price. He's in his walk year. He's coming off a significant injury in 2009. And he's due a little over $4M from now through the end of the year. Plus he has a clause in his contract that results in a $2.5M bonus if he is dealt. So the Tribe has very little incentive to keep him + they may find it hard to deal him. Cleveland fans expect him to be dealt. And it's doubtful they'll get much if anything in return unless they pick up a significant portion of the remaining money. On the positive side, he's a Garland-like veteran who can eat innings, doesn't walk alot of people, and is likely to go 6+ innings in most outings. Could be a valuable get for the back-end of a rotation in a pennant race.

LOL at Garza's phone conversation with his 8 year old son after the game... (His wife and kids were visiting relatives in California.) "My son is the funniest kid ever,'' Garza said. "When I threw against the Marlins, he told me, "Man, dad, you suck - one inning, seven runs. I could do that.' I call him last night and I said, "Matthew, did you watch the game?" He's like yea. I said, "Nine innings, no hits. Who sucks now?" And he goes, "You're still not an All-Star." "He's a chip off the old block. It was good though. He's a competitor, and that's the way I like it. He keeps you grounded. He's like, you're not the best yet. So don't start floating away yet. I think that was the coolest thing, because for me it's him getting into baseball and watching it.'

If we end up moving Hudson to get a bat (I'm not suggesting we do, just saying what-if we did)... What veteran pitcher might we be able to pick up to fill the back of the rotation for the remainder of this year? (Ignore the 2011 implications for a minute. I'm just trying to figure out if there might be an arm out there we haven't considered that could help us in a pennant push.) For example... Jake Westbrook could probably be had for a song. Not a huge fan. But he could be an asset at the back of a rotation. Others?

I have a feeling this is going to go all the way down to the last hour of the deadline. Rizzo wants to milk as much as he can out of us. But if we can wait it out, I think the chances are decent we get Dunn without giving up Hudson.

QUOTE (Mattchoo @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 12:27 PM) Can we keep Arizona in the mix for a three team deal, but instead have them send Edwin Jackson to Milw so we can get Fielder. I think I'm the only Sox fan that doesn't want the big donkey. Obviously he is an upgrade over what we currently have; I would just rather have Prince over him. The problem is that you can't really think of them as players. You have to think of them as contracts. In other words, the choice is between "60 games of Dunn before free agency" vs. "220 games of Fielder before free agency". So, Fielder is likely to be significantly more expensive to acquire.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 09:06 AM) http://pitchfx.texasleaguers.com/pitcher/5...o=7%2F26%2F2010 Pitch f/x looks fine to me. Not throwing strikes really isn't the problem. He had a lot of 0-2 counts yesterday, just wasn't able to finish the hitters off. He needs better pitch selection and he needs to throw the change-up more. Having a good slider would greatly help as well. Interesting. I get the impression from the data (if I'm reading it right) that he should have thrown fewer changeups and more sliders. Back to somebody's earlier comment about Clayton Richard... CR had similar issues in his first several starts. Could only get 1-2 pitches across the plate with consistency... MLB hitters wouldn't bite on his offspeed stuff... got behind in counts... had to throw the fastball. Got slapped around. But what Hudson has going in his favor... much better late movement on his pitches. That usually translates into good results if a guy can find the plate consistently. And Hudson's history suggests he will eventually. It's just hard to watch most young pitchers struggle in the transition to the majors.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 09:16 PM) Kanny ended up facing 27 batters. Almost perfect game. Great stuff. The only hit and baserunner in the game came via a bunt hit by the first batter. Pretty impressive. Link.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 25, 2010 -> 08:20 PM) It's not hard at all to scout/find talent. You just have to be willing to pay for it. It's no surprise that the Angels were easily able to pull off a deal like this, as they always spend in the draft/international market. The reason the Angels were able to pull off this deal has nothing to do with their drafting. It has everything to do with their willingness to give up a starting pitcher who was an all-star two years ago.
