QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 07:02 PM) Not in prison Not on a deserted island Not in hoboland Actually, in prison, people who are generally clean are highly regarded by guards and other prisoners alike.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 05:20 PM) White Sox players can have beards, they just have to keep them neatly groomed. JR has a no headband rule for the Bulls, and I think corn rows where forbidden at least for a while. Sale doesn't seem offended. I don't know why anyone here would be offended. I don't think anyone here is offended. I am just perplexed by the importance placed on this. There is a reason that its a joke in the simpsons. It is because its comical behavior for an owner to care about this.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) It does affect Reinsdorf. This is his business. Like it or not, if his players all had long hair and long scraggly beards it will affect their reputation to a good amount of people. Their reputation is huge when it comes to gaining or losing corporate sponsors. One cannot say for certain it would have an effect at all one way or the other. I don't agree with the assumption that it would have a negative effect. It may even have a positive effect. It adds character. Many teams in baseball obviously do not believe it has an effect.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 03:52 PM) I love it when people cry so much over something that does not affect their lives in the least bit. Like jerry reinsdorf crying about facial hair?

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 04:00 PM) You're right and the Sox think that too. That is why Dunn was allowed to keep his. They just don't want them to be unkempt. In what world is an unkempt beard offensive?

I am just playing devils advocate in all honesty. But I do wish the goal image of this franchise was "just win", and not "win, but only if you are clean shaven".

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 03:13 PM) The NBA a few years ago made a point of requiring their players to appear at arenas in dress gear in order to make a more professional presentation to the world. These type of "distractions" are also, to some degree, marketing an image, and thus could motivate a team to make such rules. That said, Mattingly still needs to get rid of those D*mn sideburns. If it were an MLB mandate I could understand its importance better. But its not, as is evidenced by some of the other players appearances around the league.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) Yes taking a tiny amount of time to make and enforce a dress code is really distracting. Hell, just think about how many World Series the Yankees could have won had they not had virtually the same policy. The yankees are the most successful winners in the league. The white sox are in the bottom tier of baseball. Until they sox are a winner, they should focus on winning. Then they can start worrying about their hair.
-
I was too, but if I had one thing to communicate, it is that it actually reinforces the idea, wrong or right, that the owners of this franchise are not primarily focused on winning. They are distracted by the most irrelevant details. I cant get behind it at all. I miss chicago blackhawks hockey already.

This is so f***ing stupid.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 23, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) I honestly thought this was going to be some parody article about just that when I first saw the headline. Me too, which goes to show that no matter how successful magic will be, he was always stand out more as 'that guy with aids' than 'successful businessman' in the ill mind of the public.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ May 19, 2014 -> 05:33 PM) IIRC, Vargas is always good against us. YDRC, I'm afraid.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ May 5, 2014 -> 12:09 AM) I am one that doesn't care about these advanced stats. I feel like OBP, AVG, RBI, AVG w/ RISP, BB, K, R will pretty much tell you what you want to know about a hitter. OBP is the biggest one for me. If you are getting on base a lot you are giving your team a chance to score. Yeah I can pretty much guess a guys value (or war) when all of this is known. Or in the case that I can, I can look it up in seconds. Most likely, I am thinking the perception was that casual fans in general don't want to hear about advanced metrics. That perception is likely shifting and more is to come in the future.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 04:54 PM) How in the crap were you in any way lied to? And by whom? He was bad. There was every expectation that he would be good, and reasonably so. Since when is it up to everyone else to spoon feed you promises about what a player is going to do? You can make those projections for yourself. If you're gonna claim you saw his failure coming, then good for you, maybe you're smarter than the rest of everybody. But if you didn't think he would fail, then you were just wrong, not lied to. Besides, a projection is just a projection, not a promise no matter who's delivering it. Semantics don't interest me. I agree with what you said, but don't care much about how I said what I did. He was advertised as a slugger that would improve the team. He hurt it badly.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 09:30 AM) Hating him forever? Why do people "hate" him at all? So ridiculous. Plenty of other people in the world to hate other than a baseball player that has given his all and been a good teammate. Greg you bend over backwards to defend PK who hasn't even had as good of a career as Dunn has. Stop posting for awhile champ, you are embarrassing yourself. I don't 'hate' him, but I do hate watching him becaue he was a horrible terrible pile of garbage that I had to endure in order to watch the rest of the team. And he was advertised to be the exact opposite. I don't feel guilty for feeling lied to.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 9, 2014 -> 10:51 AM) At times, I am not sure if it is ego, or massive insecurity. Two sides of the same coin.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 08:25 AM) What exactly are you buying in today's MLB for just over $4 million? i would - offer $4 million more to tanaka. start a minor leaguer. likely get more production. -

max power replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I would have let gordon walk, and I'm an optimist. No one would trade for that guy at that price. Its holding on to a losing hand at this point. I wish we would have used that money toward something else. I don't often say that. -

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 04:49 PM) Didn't he have enough service time in the majors to qualify for the players union "for life" benefits? I don't think so. Isnt it 7 years? -
The MLB teams don't pay that kind of money out very often for its own players (about $110 million including posting fee).
-
Its not like dayan's defense is so poor that it would exclude him from being a part of that super sub rest type DH.
-
I don't care for him.
