  1. Mike Ditka wasn't half the coach that Bill Walsh was.
  2. QUOTE(JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Jul 13, 2007 -> 10:50 AM) i would have to disagree with that majority of pro baseball players would have a resume like his. the fact that he was all-state in track in the 100m and 300m hurdles eliminates ~90% of the guys playing in the bigs. i couldn't name one guy on the sox right now outside of jerry owens and pods that could have done that in high school. plus, there arent many baseball players that i know of that are stud hockey players too. baseball and football or baseball and basketball yes, but hockey adds a whole new dimension than those sports - skating. add that to the fact that he was named the state's player of the year (given it is north dakota) is quite a feat in itself. holding the career hits record at university of nebraska is a huge accomplishment considering he only played 3 years of college ball and considering the tradition of the huskers baseball program. Looking at the state meet times in North Dakota, it isn't that hard to make all-state in the 100 Meter or 300 IM. Some of the all-state guys in ND wouldn't even qualify for state in Illinois.
  3. Kickers and punters are NOT athletes....or even football players, for that matter. They are guys who got cut from their high school soccer team. Also, Konerko is too slow to be considered a great athlete. His lack of speed and exposiveness is unbelievably glaring. I bet he couldn't break 13 seconds in a 100 meter dash.
  4. "The Major League Baseball All-Star Game is the premier television and sporting event of the summer. The start of our 'There's Only One October' campaign leverages this huge All-Star week audience and points them to our pay off month," said Tim Brosnan, Executive Vice President, Business, Major League Baseball. "Combining Dane Cook's talent, the video sharing components, and the depth of our broadcast partners' commitments to the campaign makes it our largest and most unique effort ever." What talent?
  5. QUOTE(bschmaranz @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 12:46 AM) I'd still say no if I were Mark.... the guy deserves to play here for the next 4 years if he wants to. Yeah, well Frank Thomas deserved to finish his career with the Sox. As Clint said in "Unforgiven", deserves got nothing to do with it.
  6. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 09:04 AM) The triple is the most exciting play in baseball. I'll go with the straight steal of home.
  7. Here's hoping Farmer takes an extended break, like, say, the whole season. I'd enjoy listening to Stone all year.
  8. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 02:28 PM) That's what you think, but you don't know that for sure, none of us do. I personally couldn't care less about Frank Thomas right now, that being said I know a lot of people still care a lot about Frank and want him to succeed, that I certainly understand. But for someone to cheer for him to beat the White Sox in a game, that makes absolutely zero sense to me. Since a lot of people disagree with you, maybe you're crazy and the rest of us are sane.
  9. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 02:13 AM) Forest Whitaker won best actor, that's pretty cool. How does an average actor like Forrest Whitaker win an Oscar, yet a legend like Peter O'Toole never does? QUOTE(Brian @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 11:15 PM) Departed was good, but not as good as Goodfellas, Raging Bull, and Casino. Should of won for all 4!!! Agree with you on Raging Bull and Goodfellas over Ordinary People and Dances With Wolves, but I liked Braveheart better than Casino in 1995.
  10. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Feb 24, 2007 -> 01:32 PM) Frank has not always been nice to the media, but I have never once heard that he was a bad teammate. I love the man and always will, he will always be my favorite player in a White Sox uni and favorite baseball player ever. Can't wait till he is enshrined in Cooperstown. A perfect summation of my feelings.
  11. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Feb 10, 2007 -> 01:11 PM) Leno>>>>>>>Letterman .........Leno is decent at delivering pre-written jokes during his monologue, probably becasue he was a stand-up comic. But other than that, he is a complete ass clown. Letterman has a very dry wit and he is extremely sharp in terms of bantering with guests. Letterman is much, much funnier.
  12. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jan 22, 2007 -> 03:29 PM) Apples and oranges. By apples and oranges, you must mean that Royko wrote scathing columns with an acerbic tone and wit that can't be matched, while Roeper constantly churns out nothing but fluff?
  13. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 01:22 PM) Anyone claiming he's a bandwagon jumper or "recent" fan is absurd. He's always written about the Sox--I know, since I've read him since day one. For you kids, he's the guy who replaced Royko at the Sun-Times when Royko jumped to the Trib. This isn't entirely accurate. Royko left the Sun-Times around '84 and Roeper didn't start writing a column there until the late 80's. For what its worth, I like Roeper, but as a columnist he doesn't come close to Mike Royko. But then, who does?
  14. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 18, 2007 -> 04:43 PM) Would somebody please add some substance to back up their claims that they can't prove? "All scouts would agree." Prove it. "Cut his walks down to be the best pitcher in the game." Prove it. Walking guys is part of his game. Carpenter has been phenomenal since coming over to the NL, and he should've won the Cy Young instead of Webb. Not that Webb doesn't deserve the mention because he has always had great stuff. He's like Halladay, a guy who eats up a ton of innings, doesn't walk anybody, and keeps the ball down. Oh and he does it pitching in the AL East too. Look at Smoltz's numbers. I've already shown Oswalt's, and Clemens' lack of innings is due to contract negoitations. If he's still pitching in the NL, he's one of the best. You call Carpenter phenomenal but consider Zambrano ove when their stats are pretty similiar. Obviously you hate all things Cubs, which is respectable. However, the stats say that Zambrano is one of the ten best starters in the game and he deserves to be paid as such.
  15. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 08:52 PM) Career: Zambrano: 64-42, 977 IP, 3.29 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 7.97 K/9, 1.94 K/BB Oswalt: 98-47, 1201.1 IP, 3.05 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 7.61 K/9, 3.86 K/BB Pitchers better than Zambrano: Clemens Oswalt Carpenter Santana Webb Halladay Pedro (after he comes back) Smoltz a case can be made for Peavy as well With the ballparks they'll be pitching in, I wouldn't rule out Schmidt and Zito putting up better numbers than Zambrano this upcoming season. Take a look at his career numbers in AL parks Yankee Stadium: 6.1 IP, 2.37 WHIP, 8.53 ERA USCF: 19.1 IP in 4 starts, 1.71 WHIP, 6.05 ERA @Baltimore: 2 IP, 3.00 WHIP, 13.5 ERA @Cle, 6 IP, 1.50 WHIP, 3 ERA In 6 starts in AL Parks, he has managed to go 33.2 innings, with a 1.87 WHIP and a 6.42 ERA I know it's a limited sample size (and it doesn't help that he can barely go 5 innings against an AL team,) but it's not just about the numbers, you can just watch the way he pitches. He's not stupid, and I don't blame him for walking or hitting guys to face the pitcher. El Duque used to do the same thing. Fall behind a hitter 2-0, just walk him. Don't want to face the next guy? Give him nothing but garbage. Oswalt, Clemens, Santana, Carpenter and Martinez(if healthy) are the only starters with numbers clearly better than Zambrano's over the last three years. Smoltz, Halladay, Webb. and Peavy's are all pretty darn comparable to Zambrano's. I said he was one of the 5-10 best starters in baseball and it seems you agree.
  16. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 17, 2007 -> 06:36 PM) Carlos Zambrano sucks against the AL too. He can't hide behind the weak hitting catcher and pitcher. For a supposed ace and Cy Young contender, his K/BB was 24th out 38 NL starters, and his WHIP was 16th. It's a shame Oswalt will be getting much less than this fatass headcase. Oswalt is clearly the better pitcher, yet doesn't get half the hype That is a one year exmple of WHIP and k/BB. Over the course of their careers, Zambrano's OPS against is 30 points lower than Oswalt's. And, as for sucking against the AL, those stats are for 9 games in the last three years. Zambrano is one of the five-ten best starters in baseball, certaintly better than Zito.
  17. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 11, 2007 -> 10:06 AM) Wow. This could be the move that mainstreams soccer in the US. Soccer will never, ever, ever be mainstreamed in the U.S.
  18. Tito really fought about as good of a fight as he could against The Iceman, but he was forced to exchange punches because of Chuck's takedown defense. Chuck is just too damn tough to take down and hold down. I'm very happy Chuck won, but Tito suprised and impressed me with his graciousness in defeat. Bring on Rampage. Also, when will the mainstream media(Suntimes, Tribune, ESPN) start recognizing MMA as a real sport? It has elipsed boxing in popularity. Also, as someone who has trained in MMA for two years now, I can assure everyone that the guys who make it to the UFC and PRIDE are world class athletes. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 30, 2006 -> 10:04 PM) Ortiz is a cool guy so I'll be pulling for him. Really? We must be watching different interviews.
  19. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Dec 24, 2006 -> 10:38 AM) You don't know what you're talking about and just because you don't have access to it does not mean it can't be true. So please, take a few moments and realize that just because it isn't being sauntered about in front of your face that it just might still be true. And oh yes, is everybody else off the ledge from last night with the projections that we're going to be worse than the Royals with the loss of McCarthy? Cuz damn, that got really old and really lame really, really fast. Soxtalk.com, fitting their own familiar mediocre players for HOF busts since 2004. Sorry if I don't blindly trust the "inside information" from people posting on an internet forum. From time to time, people like to puff out their chests and pretend that their insiders when they're not. This behavior isn't exclusive to internet forums. And the next time you call me out like this, we'll exchange phone numbers and arrange a meeting......
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 24, 2006 -> 10:16 AM) I know you are new, and you pretty much post for only a couple of reasons, and the main one is to try to piss people off, but maybe if you shut up for a while, and pay attention you would learn a little something. This board has been around for over 4 years now, and if you had asked, instead of assuming, based on your own ego, you would know that there are people on this board, who have access to information on a regular basis, that the rest of us can only dream about. Assuming it is wrong, just because you don't have first hand access to it, is just ignorant on your behalf, but at the sametime, it isn't really surprising here, just knowing your posts... Just open your mind a little bit, and you might learn something about the resources you have right in front of your closed eyes. Or, perhaps you are giving some of the people here who claim to have "inside knowledge" too much credit.
  21. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Dec 16, 2006 -> 04:16 PM) Here man, I fixed it for you. And for the love of god, turn off the television. You've seen one too many episodes of Law & Order. Sorry....I just finished watching seasons 1 through 4 of "The Wire" over the last 3 weeks. Probably the best drama series of the last 20 years.
  22. Tank had this guy clipped because he rolled on him when talking to the cops. Posse was a snitch and dead men can't testify. Tank being there with Posse at the time of the murder is the perfect alibi............I mean why would he have the guy killed when he's out with him? At least that's how Tank will sell it to the PO-lice.
