QUOTE (scs787 @ Jun 21, 2014 -> 12:52 PM) With Taj being told he's gonna start it's obvious they will amnesty Boozer, that's 15M off the books. Do you really think they're just gonna sit on that? They always try to do something, but this year it looks like they will do something even if they have to overpay. A post a while back said too bad they don't play the NBA season in the summer, and they are right. The Bulls would be a top destination. Who wants to spend their winters here?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 21, 2014 -> 12:36 PM) That my head tells me the only thing that will be interesting is how many pages of disagreement we get before the Bulls sign Mirotic, make 2 draft picks, and call it an offseason. Chad Ford did say Mirotic would be a top 6 guy in this draft. One way or another the Bulls will bring in a big name IMO. They have to.. Business as usual is not going to work.

JJ Putz?
What is the purpose of acquiring Putz? You can't trade him for anything and he won't be a part of the future.i will always be amazed at how popular other teams' crap is on this board. I know the whole doesn't cost much thing, Coop will fix him, and maybe there is a chance of that happening, but it is slim. And keep in mind, every minute Coop or the staff spend trying to fix these past their prime guys is a minute not spent on a player that might have a shot at helping the team. Hopefully someday, the Sox will have enough legit prospects where guys like Putz aren't thread-worthy.

2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 04:37 PM) At the deadline, having an expiring option, might allow the Knicks to acquire someone via trade (without having to go to the FA market). For example, if Durant were to come on the block (not saying realistic) this off-season, then you could acquire him and then give a lot of young assets back + Boozer to make things work and then the Thunder get financial flexibility + young assets going forward (otherwise they'd get stuck with another contract to bloat things). So in a final year of a deal, at the trade deadline, Boozer's contract actually becomes a good chip for a team looking to deal a player with a LT contract for future cap savings. Didn't think of that, but another thing to consider is the Knicks are tax offenders, and paid a $35milion penalty this year. Even if Melo walks they are over the cap and Boozer's money or if he is dealt for a similar salarycould trigger a repeat offender tax, which would make the actual cost of acquring him close to $40 million if not more.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) It's an expiring contract. Forgive me for my ignorance, but why would that be worth paying Boozer vs. just having another guy they can renounce after the season?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 04:13 PM) The other side of the coin is, how does everyone react if Melo walks away, for nothing? So paying Boozer $15 miilion saving a rival from having to, just for a mid first round pick, is better than just letting him walk? This is too good to be true.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 03:46 PM) That would still leave the Bulls with this year's first round pick, Mirotic, Gibson, Butler etc. Subtracting Melo for Boozer? My god. Talk about too good to be true. Too good to be true usually is. Phil would get skewered in NYC of he settled for Boozer and a pick in the second half of round 1 all while helping the Bulls. Some seats in MSG are over $1000 a game.

Trade Winds Forum?
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 10:45 AM) Williams always wanted to go for it. I think the reason they went to Hahn at that point in time was because they did realize they wanted to rebuild and did not want Williams at the helm. Williams never had the patience as a GM to build for the long haul, and he had plenty of opportunities to do so. The timing was off for that. KW started giving up the GM reins during the 2012 season. It was noted Hahn was doing more of the conversing than KW, and soon after the season ended, Hahn became the GM. Williams, however, remains very involved. Things would have been different, but I don't think significantly. The line has always been they build consensus over the years. I'm sure that hasn't changed. Maybe the weight of opinions has changed.

Supposedly Zumaya had the same injury. He never pitched in the major leagues again. Of course he had several issues, so who really knows what Floyd's ultimate fate is here.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 10:31 AM) He had a tumor in his humerus that needed to be frozen and removed. So his arm was weakened to begin with. The other one that comes to mind is a pitcher for the Marlins and Angels, I think. Was it Joe Saunders or Tony Saunders. Something like that. Tom Browning as well, but pretty rare.

Attendance
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 09:30 AM) While they play in a big market, I'm not sure I would call the Sox a big market team. The vast majority of this market belongs to the Cubs, let's face it. With nearly 10 million (9.5 estimated) people in the whole metro area, what percentage of those people do you think are actual Sox fans? It isn't like a one team town where they can count the whole market as "fans". If you say 2/3 Cubs, 1/3 Sox, that cuts your number to about 3 million people, which is half of the Houston metro area. KC is 2.3 million metro area. Minneapolis is 3.5 million. Detroit is 3.7 million. Guess what, there is some validity in those comps. Again, I think because of 2005, some people are way overestimating the fan base. Attendance is down from the 2005 levels, but if you cut out the two big historical anomalies in the WS and the opening of the new park, attendance is at a pretty high historical level. I think there is some room to come back from what happened last year, but in general, historically if this team goes over 2 million fans, that is a pretty good number. I wouldn't say 2/3 Cubs fans, and if they are, that is on White Sox management. The Cubs have been horrible for a long time. Also, the media markets are totally different. What is the metro population of Milwaukee? Look at their attendance. They are in the find a reason to go mode. Sox fans are the opposite. I think winning seasons will do it, but it's going to have to be several, because you have to take the excuse that you just knew the team would fall apart the last 2 weeks as the reason you wouldn't go to games in the summer when they were in first place away. Every time they take away an excuse, a new one pops up.

2014 White Sox draft pick thread
QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 09:26 AM) Again, I agree with most of it, but I wouldn't see it as a very slim chance he goes #1 or #2. He was the consensus number 1 prospect heading into this year, had a year which was seen as relatively disappointing and still was considered by most as the #2 prospects, sliding to #3 after a surprise pick at #2, in what was considered a good draft. In fact, the fact that his leverage is way lower as a senior makes it even more likely he'd go #1 or #2, you'd get a premium talent and the probability of an underslot deal. I'm nitpicking really, I agree with the premise that he should sign. That was my point. He would pretty much have to go 1 or 2 to get anywhere near what the Sox will give him this year. A lot can go wrong. One thing which I just read a couple of days ago, the White Sox could collapse, get one of those top picks, and would need Rodon's permission to draft him again. They probably wouldn't bother. Wite's not always right, but his odds of Rodon signing with the White Sox before July 18th are correct IMO. It makes zero sense not to sign, you just have to go through the Boras song and dance for a while.

Attendance
QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 12:57 AM) They really aren't. Sox can make payroll just from the comcast and national tv deals. You out of towners should focus on other things that sox HOME attendance. So you are saying the Sox are fine with 7 years declining attendance and declining viewership on television because they can make payroll? You are satisfied with the once every 5 or 6 years they make the playoffs. The fact is attendance is not where it should be, and it is not just on the White Sox, the fanbase has been ridiculous. It's one of those chicken/egg arguments, is the ridiculousness because of White Sox management or does White Sox management have to act like they are operating in KC because of the fanbase? I think it's a lot of both myself. This team should have the means to make a mockery of the ALC division. They have advantages the others do not. The White Sox are a large market team with a pretty small market mentality right now. And their fans will always find some excuse not to attend games.

Trade for David Price?
QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 19, 2014 -> 06:11 PM) Wow. Bowden is terrible. What a preposterously light return for Price that would be. It does seem light especially considering Bowden's reputation when he was a GM. He was known for demanding ridiculous prices for his players.

2014 White Sox draft pick thread
QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 07:35 AM) Appel and Drew were #1's that Boras controlled who did not sign. Were there any others? Matt Harrington, Bobby Seay. It would be extremely dumb for Rodon not to sign unless he just doesn't want to play for the White Sox under any circumstance. His risk is not worth any possible reward. Kris Bryant was a Boras guy. He signed a day or 2 before the deadline for just above slot. Don't be surprised if you see the same thing here. It really is no big deal Rodon gets a break from pitching. It may be a blessing. There is really nothing to suggest he won't sign. The rules have changed. There is no huge windfall to be had playing another year in college. If anything it may slow his advancement. See Appel for instance. Maybe if he signs in 2012, he doesn't have his current struggles and he is a year or 2 ahead of his current schedule to make huge money.

2014 White Sox draft pick thread
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 19, 2014 -> 11:28 PM) Anyone know what the consensus was that Mark Appel would sign after the 2012 draft? He was picked #8 overall by the Pirates, was/is advised by Scott Boras, and Boras got the kid to stay in college another year and it ended up earning him the #1 overall pick in 2013. I wonder if he is going to suggest the same strategy to Rodon. EDIT: Here is what Pirate's GM said after they drafted Appel in 2012..... "We're very optimistic we have a legitimate shot to sign Mark." Sounds kind of like Hahn? Boras made a comment after the deadline passed saying that the Pirates would have needed to offer their ENTIRE draft pool to sign Appel, more than double the assigned value of the 8th pick. The story is Appel was offered below slot to go #1 by the Astros in 2012. They supposedly offered him $6 million. Best case scenerio he goes #1 in 2013 and winds up signing 18% below slot for $6.35 million. He made a little money, but he had to go #1 to make it, and is now struggling. It's possible Boras goes that route again, but very doubtful. The Sox can throw a lot more money at Rodon than the Pirates could with the #8 pick. He'll sign, but when does Boras have guys sign quickly? It serves HIM no purpose to have guys sign for near slot right away. It would be as if they really didn't need him.

2014-2015 NFL Football thread
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 19, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) Here's the problem: people take offense to f***ing everything nowadays. Does an American of Scandinavian descent have the right to take offense to the Vikings name and logo and ask that they change their name as well? What about a Mexican-American decrying the San Diego Aztecs? Or a Greek-American being upset about the Michigan State or SJSU Spartans? An Irishman over Notre Dame's Fighting Irish? A devout Catholic about the Saints? Etc...Where does it stop? And the second bolded line, you don't know that. I certainly may have changed allegiance if I was a New Orleans Hornets fan. I still can't see the name Pelicans without laughing about it. This is a pretty well known fact, but the logo is what stands out. If the team were to argue they weren't named after a Native American tribe, then they really have nothing to stand on to defend the logo if they ever are attacked about it by the next self-righteous group who gets bored and needs something to do Of course they do, but Redskins is a much different from the names you mentioned. For some reason, people were upset with the Chief in Champaign. He was eliminated. It didn't hurt Illinois athletics. How much of a bath did Marquette take changing their name? St. Johns used to be the Red Men. If a Redskins fan goes to another team because of the name, he or she wasn't much of a fan anyway. Unless we are American Indians, we probably don't know exactly how offensive the name is, but apparently many find it very offensive. Is there really a huge amount of people that like the Redskins just because they are named the Redskins? I really doubt it.

2014-2015 NFL Football thread
I think the Redskins should change their name. If it is offensive, it is offensive. They aren't going to lose fans over a name change, and probably will make money on the new logo, not to mention the cache of old logo stuff that will become collector's items.

White v Giants Game 2
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 02:52 PM) Anyone remember hearing word that the FO loved Pence early last offseason? I do love this guy's game. They passed on drafting him 6 or 7 times in 2004 when he was a 2nd round pick.

White v Giants Game 2
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 02:41 PM) Who would have ever thought that as bad as the Sox offense had been lately that they would light up Cain and Hudson in back to back games? As Ron Washington once said, sometimes "that's how baseball go."
