Bulls make offer for KLove
Dick Allen replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) On a really bad team though. I read somewhere, maybe a Zach Lowe article, that a lot of his teammates don't like him because he pads stats. Gets out of position to get a rebound, for example. I don't understand the concept of getting out of position to get a rebound. If he got the rebound, it's a lot better than being in postion, whatever that means, and having an opponent get the rebound. Love does have his warts. His D is a big concern. His play down the stretch of games. But he's a pretty sweet player. It would be a huge committment, both financially and with players and/or draft picks to get him, so the negative on him will always come out, but the Bulls can't continue business as usual or their window will close. Sometimes you have to take a risk, and this seems like a pretty good one if they can get him. -
How many games have the Sox lost this year because of a lack of defensive OF of Danks quality not being a late inning defensive replacement in the OF? Reading gamethreads, I have always thought just about every loss is because of Ventura's stupidity.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 10:09 AM) Danks has been hitting better lately as well. 6 HR over the last 7 days. I think De Aza is a better offensive player than Jordan Danks. Just my opinion.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) With De Aza hitting Danks-esque in the majors, the one thing that can be said is that Danks will at least catch the ball, and not make stupid mistakes on the bases. De Aza has been hitting better lately and history suggests he should continue to hit better. As far as stupid mistakes on the bases, Jordan Danks has been known to make a few. I agree defensively.
-
Jordan Danks is almost 28 years old and struggles in AAA. Let's be realistic.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 07:10 PM) Yeah I agree with all this. I want Rodon here sooner than later & I would like it if the Sox can make a good impression on the kid, get the ball rolling in the right direction for the sake of future negotiations should they be necessary. My opinion on MDO definitely changes knowing he only had TJ once. I swear I read 2 TJs somewhere, here or elsewhere. Maybe not, maybe was someone else or someone else implanting thoughts into my brain from afar just to screw with me (caulfield?), but whatever, I definitely would like to sign him now. But also that improves his chances of making it through college without further injury, so maybe it would take more than half a million or so. But no matter what I will be happy with this entire draft should we get Rodon on here pretty quickly, and anything else is just icing on the cake. Laumann said he thought 3-4 weeks, Hahn isn't a-scared of Borass, so maybe we'll get this thing done pretty soon. Ideally that is the case because then you throw whatever your remaining bonus amount is at BMDO along with whatever other perks you can pull together while still sticking to the CBA guidelines, and then you make your offer. Also: I find it interesting that in this pic he looks in his late 30's, early 40's, I bet your average sales clerk would sell him beer without ID before he'd sell to Brent Lillibridge ID or not. Also I bet he buys beer for his friends & in KC he's porbably been buying chew and smokes for his buddies since he was 14. Also I like turtles. A friend of mine used to be able to buy beer without getting carded as a freshman in high school. That was convenient. As for Kolek, I hope he turns into a freak and throws 105 MPH or more. It would be awesome to see. I just have a bad feeling. Andrews had a list of reasons for all the TJ surgeries and Kolek could have put a check next to each one of them.

I don't know where anyone is getting the Sox would have drafted lower had they kept Rios. They were 3 games worse than the Cubs and Rios was basically replaced by Garcia who did pretty good last year. It's good that he's gone even if he is producing. That play during Darvish's near perfect game is all you really need to know about Alex Rios.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 06:26 PM) That doesn't sound as accurate as saying the same year after he was drafted out of high school, he made 21 errors right after he turned 18 and then 56 errors at Greensboro in 1993 when he was 18/19. When Ozzie Smith was 22 he was in A ball and made 23 errors in 65 games. I'm not saying Anderson is destined to be a GG quality SS, he may in fact turn out to be so brutal they have to move him, but as of now, these errors are no big deal.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:42 PM) https://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/2014-...-unprecedented/ I'd like someone to pay me $8 million, but it's not happening. Even if he didn't sign, went back to NC State and threw nothing but no hitters, striking out 2 an inning, his $8 million bonus ship has sailed. He will sign somewhere near slot. Like the Men's Warehouse guy, I guarantee it. Bryant wanted above slot last year, and wound up signing for slot.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:38 PM) If he looks for the rumored $8 million bonus that was whispered before the draft, all of that flies out the window, and explains why neither Miami or Houston touched him. Link? The quote I saw was $6 million. Besides, he can't get $8 million and he knows it. And if he went back to college, even if he was drafted #1 next year, he wouldn't get it anyway.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:29 PM) That is an incredibly simplistic view of what is going to go on, especially because we could be talking about losing draft picks both this year and next year, if they were to ignore the caps. I really don't understand the need for you to critique each of my posts, but maybe history will help. Last year, Kris Bryant wound up signing for slot. Appel wound up signing for 18% below slot. They both had Boras as an "advisor". Rodon will sign somewhere near slot. There may be a little dance to get there, but it makes zero sense for him not to sign unless he really doesn't want to play for the White Sox. The Sox aren't going to lose draft picks. And there is a 99% chance Rodon signs. And it is simplistic, because with the new rules, it's pretty simple.
-
Considering the value of this bonus will be about half of what it took to sign Jeff Keppinger, I don't think it means much to the "relationship" either way, unless Rodon winds up not signing. What they are going to be arguing about now with the new rules is total chump change.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 11:34 AM) This is absolutely ridiculous too. YOU don't imagine he will commit fewer than that. If he makes it to the majors as a full time player, it's not likely going to be until 2017. That is going to give him 2 and a half more years to improve his glove. That is plenty of time. I agree. In a couple of years we might have a better idea, but certainly not now. I know he isn't the greatest fielder ever but in the minors before he was called up, Jeter had 21 errors in 57 games. Followed that up with 56 errors in 126 games. Then had 25 in 138 and 29 in 123. That's 131 errors in 444 games. Maturing, getting to play on better fields and having a first baseman who can save you a couple can make a big difference.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) Yes, the key point other than the fact that Ventura 1) believed that Sale was his best choice there despite the unique circumstances of the end of the 7th and the start of the 8th, after the 1 hitter up until that point...2) shouldn't have been over-riden by the fact that Chris Sale probably convinced Ventura to let him face Mike Trout when he was only 3-4 starts removed from a serious injury DLing and 3) the season, as we've been told over and over is basically meaningless, so why push one of the two most important assets to the brink in a high leverage situation where he's throwing a ton of pitches there at max effort (especially reaching back for every ounce of FB left against Trout) when you have relievers who have been doing the job for the last 6 weeks or so? Yet you complain at the choice of relievers. Of course after the fact. If you are saying if Ventura pulled Sale and put Putnam in, at the time you chose, of course, after the fact, and Putnam blew the game, you wouldn't be calling him an idiot and mentioning stuff like no ball had been hit hard, Trout was hitting .100 vs. Sale, he was at 108 pitches, or saying he should have used some other reliever, sorry I don't believe you. And there are several others in the same boat. The Sox lost, of course it has to be Ventura's fault, because hindsight makes everyone a genius. Either the Sox have the talent right now to be world champions or game threads blaming Ventura for this and that have become beyond ridiculous. If you take them as gospel, if any one of several posters on here replaced Ventura, the White Sox would be close to undefeated. Sale is an ace. He got beat. It's baseball, not a sign that Robin Ventura doesn't know what he is doing. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 10:53 AM) It was using Petricka over Putnam as well...that didn't make any sense to use your fourth best reliever. Granted, we can understand why he wouldn't choose to go with Downs against Hamilton, so part of this is Hahn's fault since if he keeps trotting Downs out there to get his brains bashed in, he'll also get criticized. I think it has to do with the fact that the situation was deteriorating so quickly...and yes, a lot of that wasn't Chris Sale's doing, the only hard-hit ball of the inning was Trout's, and it wasn't a horrible pitch or even particularly bad location. It was just the circumstances BEFORE the homer, particularly not getting the call against Kendrick as well as the missed out at 2B on Ianetta...which were both clearly leading to frustration with Chris (not unlike what happens with Quintana before a big inning ensues, normally related to defensive miscues around him). LMAO Petricka had a 1.42 ERA coming into that game. And everything else you describe is reason to keep Sale in. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) Oh, missed Melo. Yeah that's somethin. Melo, Love and DRose on the floor at the same time would make for some Paul Westhead type scores. The Bulls would put up 125 with regularity. They probably would give up 125 with regularity as well. -

For future reference, Chris Sale at 108 pitches, Robin is an idiot if he lets him face the next hitter if the game is on the line, let alone Mike Trout. Soxtalk would rather see Petricka face him. People are acting like the hits he had given up were rockets all over the place. If that is how you really feel, one thing is certain. Chris Sale INAA. -
Flowers is 0 for his last 9 with 8 strikeouts.

Tyler Flowers now has 700 career ABs and has fanned 269 times. He currently leads the league with 68.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 8, 2014 -> 10:23 AM) I didn't have a problem with Sale starting the 8th, but he's not superman. After one in, two on, get a fresh arm in there--especially after having a stressful 7th. Why are people ignoring the fresh arm gave up the go ahead run. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 8, 2014 -> 08:48 AM) Of course, you can say the same thing about 20-24 teams in the majors. Even the Astros (with Springer and Singleton now up), Cubs and DBacks are showing signs of life. The Rays might be the "deadest" of them all at the moment. And if you wait to see what the results were, you too can manage better than any manager in history. Sure, after the fact, taking Sale out after the guy reached on an error is the move everyone would have made. It is obvious. And sure, after Petricka and his 1.50 ERA come in an blow the game, unless you are the idiot Ventura is, Putnam should have been used. Just go to the archives of the gamethread against the Yankees where Danks gets pulled after 8 leading 3-0, and the Sox lose. Many of the complainers are the same, but they now are using the opposite argument. It is funny Ventura is becoming like Obama to a republican to many posters here. It doesn't matter what he does, it is wrong. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 8, 2014 -> 08:39 AM) I was going to say that too. You won't get any though. It's like the strange "defense" of Greg Walker. No one ever actually defended him or thought he was good, just people like to argue and talk in circles. Same with RV. Players like playing for him. Sale,Abreu, Eaton, Beckham all on the DL this year. Johnson and Paulino train wrecks, and a team a lot of the Ventura haters said had no chance at the playoffs with a full roster, still have a shot. The fact that you are still pissed off they are losing and not the "good fans" we are supposed to be not caring if they lose so their draft pick is higher, shows he is doing a job. There is a fight in this team. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 8, 2014 -> 08:19 AM) Had Ventura brought in a reliever and Trout took him deep, this board would have melted down. "How dare you take out the best pitcher in the league! " You don't have to go back very far to see that. Robin was an idiot to bring his closer into a 3-0 game in the 9th with John Danks pitching. An absolute idiot.
