QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 07:37 PM) I thought it was top 5, but either way, probably around $18 million. Looks like it was a little over $14 million this year.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 07:30 PM) I think it is the average of the top 3 contracts at the position I am not a Cutler apologist. I think he is what he is. I don't think he is going to wake up one day and be Rodgers or Peyton Manning. He has warts, and the Bears will have to accept that. However, I also don't buy the Trestman can make any old journeyman QB. Pro bowler. There are people who get paid millions who know football a lot better than me, and i really believe if they thought that, he wouldn't have ever had to coach in Montreal. Pay jay the franchise tag. Develop another QB. If Jay shows he deserving of a longer huge commitment, fine. If not the replacement could then be ready to go.

What will it cost to franchise Cutler? Franchise him for a year or even two, draft a QB, and see what happens.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 04:09 PM) I would be interested if he had more than 1 year left on his contract. It would be foolish to trade young talent for such a player. What young players do the Sox have that really would be foolish to get rid of? Headley still put up an OBP not seen on the White Sox even in an injury plagued year. I would see if he would be interested in an extension. If the answer is no, his price tag went down a bit. If yes, by all means, see if you can get him. The White Sox aren't exactly loaded with studs in the minor leagues.

QUOTE (GoGoSox2k2 @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 03:08 PM) i completely agree with this. cano just strikes me as a guy that does not always have that fire and desire for the team aspect. not the guy i want the white sox (with the way our finances are) to tie up money long term to. as someone mentioned below, id much rather sign mccann and ellsbury than just cano Ellsbury is certain to spend a lot of time on the DL. I would rather have Cano. The Sox aren't going to sign either, but it is fun to speculate. McCann is the guy I want the Sox to get. I don't know if it is realistic or not, but if they got him and made a correct trade or 2, picked up a couple of relievers, they really would be good to go.

It's one thing to give Cano $25 million a year. It's quite another to commit to doing that for 8 to 10 years.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFan05 @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 04:42 PM) Vincent Rizzo Sports @vincentrizzosports MLB #NYYankee outfielder Curtis Granderson is VERY CLOSE to sign 5-YEAR DEAL W/ Chicago White Sox, deal worth 16 million per yr. One problem is Granderson isn't a free agent until 5 days after the WS.

This guy has better numbers than Oney and Nick Parent. BTW, what is Ozney doing?
-
Jay who?
-
I think Kung Fu Panda is a possibility.
-
Bears failing to challenge costs them 3 points.
-
What cracks me up is when this guy becomes available, everyone says the Sox must get him. They get him, then people worry the Sox spent too much. Who cares? You aren't signing the checks. I could only imagine the complaining if the Sox didn't sign this guy.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 19, 2013 -> 10:44 PM) They will be practically minting money if they win another World Series You can also see them taking a run at Masahiro Tanaka as well...with two Japanese pitchers already on their roster. Of course, the Dice-K Experience might be enough to force them to shy away. They are minting money now. I don't think winning another WS would have the financial impact it would have on other teams. There aren't many more tickets they can sell. They really can't increase the price all that much either.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 19, 2013 -> 12:21 PM) Manto was from outside the organization If the organization is floating the idea of Konerko returning, I think they are going to be trying to move Dunn. Having all three on the roster is a potentially disastrous idea and forces you to trust that they all remain healthy and able to come off the bench at any time. It also forces the other 2 bench spots to be extremely flexible for all positions Manto was the White Sox minor league hitting coordinator for 4 or 5 years before being named major league hitting coach.

Gomes double is gone at any other park. Victorino's granny is only gone at Fenway.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 19, 2013 -> 10:10 PM) I just want to know one good reason Salty won't automatically re-up with the Red Sox? They might not think he is a $8-9 million a year, 3 or 4 year contract guy.
-
QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 19, 2013 -> 04:35 PM) Regarding Salty, less strike outs please. Up until this year, Salty has not been a whole lot better than Flowers. I would be leery paying him big money for 3 or 4 years based on one season.

People love to call Beckham a bust, but there are only 2 players in the first 46 of the 2008 draft that have a higher career WAR than him.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFan05 @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 06:51 PM) Reds shopping Brandon Phillips. Beckham, Santiago, and Webb for Phillips? Why?

QUOTE (ozzfest @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 12:29 PM) I should have made myself more clear. Apologies. I'm talking about being the BIG spender. Dye and AJ were great under the radar moves. Every team HAS to hit on those sometimes. BUT, I'm talking about unloading big money and being right. So basically you are saying anytime the White Sox land a high priced guy, we should be pessimistic because no other team offered him as much. That's a bad way to go through life as a Sox fan. The Sox need some offense. They just picked up some guy who is 26, free agents generally are a lot older, and put up numbers people don't put up in Little League in Cuba. Be happy. Also, in the grand scheme of things, this really isn't all that big money anymore. Chances are probably better this guy pans out than the guy they select with the 3rd pick of the draft next June.

The White Sox next hitting coach will have been a hitting coach previously. Hahn has made that clear more than once, and if Paulie isn't playing, he isn't going to be away from home for 6 months to be a hitting coach. The most thankless job in baseball.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 10:04 AM) I love the analysis, "He does not hit #1 and #2 pitchers very." Very few hitters hit #1 and #2 pitchers very well, most good numbers come from hitting the #3-#5 starters. Perfect example of this is Alphonso Soriano. It seems from what I read, even the guys down on him say he is going to kill the lower end guys.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 09:38 AM) I've been all about McCann for a long time now, but I wouldn't be surprised if the JDA signing took a lot of the money away from the McCann fund. Let's not forget that this is a 99 loss team. Situations like the 2013 Red Sox are uncommon, and they had a much better core than we do. Spending needs to happen, but it needs to happen cautiously. I don't think Hahn wants to put his job on the line in year two. That said, I'd love to have McCann, I just think it's much less likely now. Abreu will make less than Peavy was supposed to make. Less than Rios was supposed to make, depending how they break it down, about as much as Floyd was paid for 2013. Konerko, Thornton, Crain all gone. An additional $25 million from the national TV contract. There is plenty more money to spend if they chose to spend it. The last 2 times the White Sox lost 90 + games in a season where they weren't undergoing a total rebuild, they made the playoffs in 2008, and won 90 games in 1977. With 5 teams now playoff bound, it's not outlandish to think they could contend for a spot with a couple of pick ups. I think the odds of 2013 repeating itself are pretty slim. Hahn knows he needs offense, he mentioned it as his #1 priority. He is going to pick up another big bat somewhere without a doubt.

QUOTE (staxx @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 08:06 AM) my exact thoughts.. i'm beyond ecstatic, but the bleacher report scouting thing that said he struggles to cover a 92 mph inside fastball... that doesn't exactly scream MLB hitter. When they had some old scouting reports out on the internet last summer, did you happen to read a few of the reports on Frank Thomas? One said it was doubtful he could hit .250. I wouldn't be too freaked out about certain reports. He obviously can hit at least a little bit or teams like Boston and Texas wouldn't be offering him at least $40 million. And again, I wouldn't be freaked out about a guy who might not hit perfect pitches. There aren't many guys that can do that. This is an exciting signing. Enjoy it. Maybe he won't live up to the hype, but at worst he should be serviceable. The other benefit is, supposedly this guy, just like Cespedes and Puig, is in a lot better shape now than he was when he was putting up these ridiculous numbers.

QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 07:52 AM) You must not ever hear Konerko speak. There's zero chance he'll immediately coach/manage after he's done playing. Frank Thomas is a name, but I don't know if he can coach. And I doubt Kenny Williams wants to go there even if they buried the hatchet. Plus Hahn already said they're going to hire a guy with experience. Rudy Jaramillo maybe. Someone asked Hahn about Thome yesterday and Hahn reiterated the next hitting coach is going to be a guy who is experienced, and a guy whose philosophy will not just be prevelant at the major league level, but throughout the system.
