  1. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 07:34 PM) I guarantee you the Twins aren't thrilled to see us get him. I bet they aren't quiverring either. $4 million would have been much better spent in the offseason.
  2. If the Cubs were 4 1/2 out and they picked up this clown, this board would be laughing at them.
  3. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 07:21 PM) Damn you Dodgers. We really could have used him these last 2 games. This weekend ended too perfectly for the Dodgers in dumping him and essentially waving the white flag. After today, I'm sure there aren't many Dodger fans who even care he's leaving. Maybe he will be a spark, but if the Sox are picking up the entire salary for one month, they are admitting they made some huge mistakes last offseason. I think its going to be too little too late, but I can see where he will generate some interest.
  4. Terry Bevington in the house.
  5. QUOTE (dmbjeff @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 12:14 PM) if a player is claimed, like Manny and then gets hurt between the claim and the deadline to make a deal, can the team still give him away or since he is injured, could the team who claimed him refuse the player? They can still give him away, but in most circumstances they wouldn't due to the lingering effects it would have on them in the future.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 29, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) Manny not playing again today for Dodgers Is there any reason at all not to think the Dodgers will dump Manny on the White Sox? If they aren't playing the guy, either he's hurt or there is some spectacular prospect KW is willing to send their way. They can already get out of the money. Its almost like they are telling Manny please leave, you aren't going to play here, that the only hold up is fear he will say no.
  7. Olney was on Baseball Tonight last night and said some service called Accuscores determined acquiring Manny meant 1/2 more win for the Sox for the balance of the season. Hopefully its against Minnesota. I just looked up accuscores. They like the Sox today .
  8. I think KW probably would have at least claimed Fuentes considering the shambles the bullpen is in if he didn't possibly have over $4 million possibly tied up with Manny.
  9. QUOTE (Real @ Aug 28, 2010 -> 03:02 PM) Again, keep telling me we have this amazing medical, strength and conditioning staff So uh, Thornton might be back in 8 or 9 days because it was retroactive placement right? Blaming his injury on the Sox staff might be one of the most ridiculous statements of all time. He was an injury that has happened and was waiting to happen. So is Sale for that matter, and if Thornton blows out his elbow, it won't be the first time. Just about every pitcher is going to have some big issues eventually. Some sooner than others. Very few play 10-15 years anymore unscathed.
  10. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Aug 28, 2010 -> 03:00 PM) Didn't he just hit a couple of doubles his last night playing? Sounds like a smokescreen to me. It could be a lot of things. It could be straight and he's not ready for the better pitching in the league. He could still be a huge injury risk in the field and they can't DH him. They may think they really have very little chance and want to sit him and if they lose 2 out of 3, dumping him won't seem so bad, if they win 2 or 3 and get closer, they can say they won without him. Its anyone's guess, and if Nightengale is right and the teams have not had trade discussions prior to the claim, dumping the financial obligation is a pretty big motivator IMO if you really think you are probably dead anyway or better off without him. I couldn't have been more wrong with how I thought this scenerio was going to go, but if I was betting now I'd say Manny will be a White Sox if he agrees to come by Tuesday.
  11. So let me get this straight, a guy his current HOF manager says is not ready to hit good pitching so he sits down is precisely the man that will lead the White Sox to the promised land? Personally I think Joe and the Dodgers probably think Manny will blow a calf or something if he plays the field right now. Its a real tricky situation for the Sox. They may get Manny, but it may not be for very long.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 28, 2010 -> 03:44 AM) It's already pretty much too late, big russ. The p**** Twins are way ahead simply cause we can't beat them head to head. If it's close when we go to Minnie for that next 3 game series, it's heartbreak time again. We can't beat them. The Sox are done in Minneapolis this season but do have 3 left at USCF. I think you are a little off the deep end here, but one thing you couldn't be more correct about IMO is the head to head. Its what has killed the Sox. They are 5-10 against them. If they were just 7-8, they would be in first place. If they were 10-5 against Minnesota, USCF would be jammed every night and the team would be preparing for the playoffs right now.
  13. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Aug 26, 2010 -> 09:55 PM) Ahem.... >cough cough That was going out on a limb. I've got Pujols as my pick to click for the Cardinals tomorrow.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2010 -> 09:42 PM) Our choices right now are guys like Threets and Harrell. I wouldn't mind taking a chance on Trevor. He wouldn't be a horrid pick up, but he isn't exactly cheap.
  15. I think KW cries poor just for the hell of it. As far as I know, JR is the money guy. Read this quote, JR hasn't mentioned anything about a lack of money but KW is looking for loose change: Whenever I've talked to (Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf), it's less about money even though we are stretched right now," Williams said, speaking in general terms. "We are stretched, and quite frankly we're looking at walkups every day to see exactly what we're going to have available to us. But he certainly hasn't given me any reason to think there are any restrictions right now on dollars."
  16. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 26, 2010 -> 09:15 PM) I wish Freddy would teach Edwin the splitter. I think that would be a ridiculous wipeout pitch if he added it. Most pitchers that throw splitters lose their gas.
  17. Jones actually could be pretty useful if he would alter his approach and stop trying to hit everything 1000 feet. When he's willing to go to right center he hits a lot more homers and gets on base a lot more
  18. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 06:33 PM) His September last year wasn't all that bad. .218/.384/.449/.833. And as far as players being motivated when they're playing for contracts, do you think it's just coincidence that Konerko's two best seasons have come the year before he was set to become a FA? Not saying it's right. But it's reality. Konerko's 2004 was almost a carbon copy of 2005, and he had a higher OPS in 2006 than 2004 or 2005. You cannot compare Konerko's attitude with Manny's. There's no questioning Manny's talent, but he's taken a lot of time off during his career just to be stupid. His numbers would be ridiculous if he had Konerko's worth ethic.
  19. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 06:31 PM) So how could anyone report "Sox are close to deal with Dodgers", if they can't even be awarded the claim until Friday? Unless he was actually placed on waivers on Monday, and no one noticed? They can agree to a deal, but just can't actually make it until the Sox are awarded the claim. Who knows, maybe KW is only going to actually claim him if he can work out a deal beforehand. Perhaps they aren't willing to take on the $4.5 million total burden.
  20. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 06:29 PM) His September last year was still better than what Kotsay & Jones have done this year. And if he does 75% of what he did when the Dodgers traded for him in 2008, he would probably our best hitter for the last month. 2 years when you're 38, a bad leg, and no juice is going to make anything near what he did when he became a Dodger highly unlikely.
  21. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 06:26 PM) so who goes away to make room for Manram? Kotsay? Lilli? I predict Andruw Jones, which would disappoint given his defensive skills late in the game. From what I've read, the Sox really think Jones has been an excellent influence on Rios. I think Lillibridge would find his way to Charlotte and get called back up in a few days when rosters expand.
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 06:20 PM) Then the Sox wont pick him up, its as simple as that. I am guessing he's at least healthy enough to DH which makes us alot better of a team. I hope he does better this September than last. I think even his biggest admirers would admit its at least a little sad when a guy getting paid over $20 million a year to do something has to have some sort of carrot put in front of his nose to get "motivated".
  23. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 06:17 PM) Another quick question about waivers. Do they wait until the 48 hours are over to award the claim, or just until all teams have submitted a response? I would think a team like the Twins would wait until the last second to make their decision so the Sox have to wait longer to get Manny into the line-up. I find it hard to believe he was placed on waivers today, and the Sox have already been awarded the claim. Its 49 hours until a claim is awarded. You don't have to check no, so if something happens in the next day or so where you may want to put a claim in, you can.
  24. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 06:14 PM) Exactly, there is a 100% chance that he is better than Jones and Kotsay if he's healthy. The White Sox spent the 3rd least in offseason FA additions, they have cash. If he's healthy. I'm guessing he's not. There are a lot of players who would be an upgrade at the DH spot right now who you wouldn't have to pay $4 million to roll the dice.
  25. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 25, 2010 -> 06:04 PM) DA, there is no guarantee. He could go end of '09 Jermaine Dye on us. But would you rather go with the guarantee that Kotsay/Jones will continue to be inept or that one of the top offensive forces in the history of the game can do what he's done his whole career? I'm not looking for 1999 Manny. I want a Manny that can get us to the playoffs. As far as the 4 million goes, I say f*** it. We've got a 4/5 starter making over 8 million in Edwin Jackson next year. We added Peavy/Rios last year when KW basically said he was broke. I've given up trying to figure out this team's resources and how they choose to allocate them. Finances aside, and its common knowledge I believe the Sox have a lot more money than they let on, as does Forbes. In fact, these leaked balance sheets the past couple of days seem to make Forbes numbers even more believable, and another owner who claims he breaks even every season, and didn't have the resources to help pay a bigger portion of the bill for their new ballpark, Mr. Loria, was caught making $50 million. I just think spending $4 million to have a broken down Manny Ramirez on your roster for maybe 30 games, and who knows how many of those he would actually be in the line up, could've and should've been so much better, but the White Sox continue with the build the club during the season when they admit no one wants to do anything for at least 60 games, then the deadline is there and teams are asking for too much.
