Type A compensation is nice but a couple of factors have to be thought of. First you have to offer arb. which means a healthy raise. Does a team that probably can't win next year really want to do that if there's a decent chance its accepted? Secondly, you have to draft players and give them healthy bonuses. Then you have to spend money to develop them. I'd much rather get a guy you have an even better idea about, who has been developed a little bit and has already been given his bonus.

Pierre should never get a GG because part of OF defense is throwing, and teams take extra bases on him at will.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 23, 2010 -> 08:14 PM) The problem is that you are forcing it into the conversation now, which is total bulls***. Asking "chw are you trying to build a case where if and when we lose the division we can all simply say, "It's Bobby Jenks' fault!"" followed by "Not flaming. Just asking" followed by "Thats pretty f***ing stupid" is starting a argument where there was none. How about you quit feeling like you have to defend every iota of Bobby Jenks being and start discussing other topics without feeling like you need to ask if people are subtly taking shots at Bobby. Or even better, being able to admit when Bobby f***s up and saying "You know what? He sucked tonite" and leave it at that. There are overreactionary people that feel like a few bad outings dooms a player, and there are overreactionary people on the other end of the spectrum such as you that can never admit when a bad outing happens. Then there are the gray area people such as myself who can see the bigger picture and can understand that at some point either we have to s*** or get off the pot with jenks. The problem that I have with everything you have been saying is that everyone that doesnt worship the ground that Jenks walks on(such as yourself) is grouped into one big "insane messageboard people" list by you. If you havent noticed, Ozzie is starting to get a bit queasy with his closer as well and the message is out there that if he cannot get it done, there are two other big arms in the bullpen that can. Ozzie should be queasy. Jenks has been consistently poor this year outside of June. His ERA was 5.00 in April, almost 8.00 in May and almost 10.00 in July. Last season he wasn't exactly stellar either, now he thinks just because he gets paid $7.5 million, he really doesn't have to prove himself, he already did 5 years ago. I wonder who will be number 45 on the White Sox next year. BTW, word is Detroit is hot for Adam Dunn now that Maggs is out.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 10:10 AM) Apparently we're at the top of CP3's list now according to Broussard. Deal being rumored is Nelson, VC, Ryan Anderson + 1st round picks for CP3 and Posey. Portland is the wildcard team in all of this I'd say though. But us getting CP3 means Miami vs. Orlando Eastern Conference Finals for the next 5 years probably. Why would that matter? Has it come to this in the NBA that not only do you get your wish to be traded when under contract, they actually are supposed to trade you to the place you want to go most? Its ridiculous. Paul is being repped by Lebron's guys now. If he gets his supposed wish, the NBA will be in a lot of trouble in a couple of years. Personally, I hope if they trade Paul, I hope they send him to the least desirable place he wants to go. The Hornets still have the upper hand here.

Detroit sucks.

I don't think there's a chance in hell the Sox trade for Fielder in the next week. I think they threw that out there to let Rizzo know or think they had other options, and weren't married to the idea of acquiring Dunn.

QUOTE (spiderman @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 01:08 PM) This person who works with the Phillies knows what the White Sox, Astros and Nationals are doing? I'm sure its just speculation based on the info they have. If Adam Dunn replaces Kotsay in the line up and they don't lose any other major league parts, there's a pretty good chance the Sox win the division comfortably, which is important in the fact it lets you set up your playoff rotation and can give your bullpen the proper rest.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 08:46 AM) In the playoffs all you need is a solid 1-2-3 and you can probably get by pitching only those guys for the entire run. As long as Floyd-Danks-Buerhrle stay on track and the Garcia and Hudson don't implode they'll be fine. Having Peavy in the mix was a bonus, not a necessity. Of course, this entire argument is predicated on us getting another bat to fill the void, but whatever. Last year's playoff schedule was a joke, and you're right, all you needed was 3 starters, if that. They supposedly have tweaked that this year. Peavy is a huge loss, but if Garcia holds up, the Sox could get away with it if they make the playoffs especially if the bullpen comes through. Some more offense would help.

They had some sort of beer garden seven or eight years ago, but it didn't last long.

Brent Morel with torn labrum, surgery at season's end
Dick Allen replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 01:12 PM) I don't even know why this would have any effect on his trade value. It's his non-throwing shoulder, and he will be able to play through it. I would think staring at any type of surgery has to drop your sexiness to other teams at least a little bit. -
Ozzie said Teahen is going to get some DH time when he comes back. Anyone still think the Sox really don't need a DH?

Shingo was 8-9 in save opportunities when he lost his job and ultimately was DFA'd. Jenks has been pretty bad this season save for a pretty good stretch in June and part of July. He was pretty bad in 2009. Its time to move on. He cannot be trusted with the final outs. The division should be close. These 2 games may make a huge difference at the end. I know closers are perfect, but a 3 run lead in the 9th on Sunday, you don't have to be perfect and still get the save. Seattle hadn't scored a run forever before Jenks entered last night.

QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 05:35 AM) I agree with Greg. Jenks,in close situations, has been very good until these last 2. Every player goes through slumps and Bobby is in one because his stuff looks very average to below average right now. If he shakes it and gets his stuff back, the bullpen is again the best in the league. If he continues to struggle, the good thing is there are options. The bad thing is, with Jenks mentality, he seems like he may be useless if he's not in a closing role as evidenced by his performance in non-save situations. Let's face it, the team is at its best when Jenks is closing out games like he can and having Putz, Santos, and Thornton shuting down the game in the earlier innings. I think you see what you want to see with this guy not the facts. Jenks has allowed seven runs on seven hits while walking two in 2 2/3 innings covering his past four outings since the All-Star break. He's made a lot of outings interesting this year. He has cost the Sox 2 wins in 4 days. Only one counted as a blown save because once he was so awful they pulled him before the other team took the lead. When you have other options, better options, like Putz and Thornton, its time to let go and realize Bobby isn't nearly as good as those two and shouldn't be the guy counted on to end games in his final couple months as a White Sox.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 08:19 PM) McGrady is worth a shot. You can't do much better right now. If he gets hurt, you sign a guy out of the NBDL and make do. It's not like there's a lot of minutes to go around right now. Is it really that great if we sign a Roger Mason Jr. type and he plays 10 minutes/game? Will he make enough of a difference to matter? No... Basically, you see if McGrady can work out and if he gives you solid bench minutes, it's great. If not, you split those minutes among Brewer, Korver, JJ, and sign a D-leaguer to fill the bench. I'd prefer to take that chance. McGrady is a me first type of guy. There are a lot of NBA people hoping he would take the minimum in Miami so he could ruin that team. I would be shocked if the Bulls sign him even if he would play for the minimum and would be more shocked if the Bulls signed him if he actually was a useful player and lasted the entire season on the roster.

The one massive upgrade KW can give this team is an upgrade at DH with Dunn. His price will come down a little. The Sox sent Reed, Olivo and Morse to Seattle for what was at the time a rental in Garcia. Signed him and he was a huge part of winning a title while the prospects faded. I'd hate to give up Hudson now, because if he stops walking people he should be fine. All others are fair game as far as I'm concerned if Dunn is the prize. He makes an average line up a scary one.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 07:15 AM) Part of the reason Flowers is hitting for a low average but walking a lot might be that, at least lately, his lineup "protection" has been Josh Kroeger, who hasn't hit for s*** all year. He's picked it up in the walks department, but this season has been a huge dissappointment offensively thus far. To give any blame to Kroeger when you are on a pace to strikeout almost 200 times in 500 AB in AAA seems a bit silly. He's just struggled.

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Jul 19, 2010 -> 06:42 PM) Swisher. But KW made it sound like they just sent that player home. They never sent Swisher home although I do agree they thought of him as a cancer, so if it was him, KW probably made it a little more dramatic than it really was, but I could have sworn I heard this story at Soxfest long before Swisher was a White Sox.

White Sox at Twins 7-18 game thread 1:05 first pitch

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 05:59 PM) This hurts but it isn't fatal. I'm not at all ready to say that this is a season ender, just a momentum shifter. Back in 2003 Jose Paniagua was lit up by the Twins for several runs in the 9th inning in a game the White Sox won. He is still the butt of jokes and the finger is pointed at him for giving the Twins "momentum" and overcoming the White Sox in September. Manuel was called an idiot for pitching him, and Paniagua was the season's goat, even though every game he appeared in while wearing a White Sox uniform was a White Sox victory. How do the same people spin this Jenks' performance as anything but death to the White Sox? For all those that blamed Paniagua for 2003, the season has to be over. I was surprised when Jenks was on his bereavement that Ozzie mentioned the calf was still bothering him because he had been pitching much better, but since he's been back, he's been awful. Make Putz the closer. Its probably too late for him to get his $3 million kicker this year, plus you set him up to re-sign next year when Jenks is somewhere else. Let Jenks pitch the 7th or 8th with a short leash until he gets himself straighten out. It has to be at least 100:1 that Jenks is a White Sox beyond this season. He seems heavier than ever IMO. Its time to give him a lesser role. Today was a game that in no way should have been lost, but they are still in first place and hopefully some reinforcement(s) are coming soon. -

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 04:39 PM) Okay so serious question... Should Jenks be used as trade bait? I bet he would thrive in the NL. Should be be flipped to an NL contender for some prospects that could add to a package for a trade to get a LH bat or another starting pitcher? 300 lb guys with diminishing stuff who have lots of leg problems and make $7.5 million generally don't have much trade value. -

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 04:32 PM) Good teams would of buried Blackburn when they had to chance and not leaving too many runners in scoring position. This team has no killer instincts at all. First off, Friday the Sox had a chance to become the first team since 2001 in MLB to have 2 ten game winning streaks the same season. They blew that game, but did give themselves a pretty good shot in the 9th. Last night it was a 1 run game. Today they blew it, but in reality, Jenks blew it. A 3 run lead in the ninth should be automatic. I don't think they are as good as they have been playing before these 3 losses, and the fact ist they were 26-5. If the Sox had the attitude you claim they have, they would have mailed this season in long ago. Now remove Jenks as the closer, get another bat and if you think Minnesota or Detroit, a team that was swept by Cleveland is better, good for you, but I'll take my chances. -

Not that it really was a big deal and most likely only delayed the inevitable, and saved Jenks an earned run, but who exactly was Rios throwing the ball to? -

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 18, 2010 -> 04:17 PM) A walk isnt even the worst situation, it sets up the force at the plate. Obviously youd love a K or pop up. You're right, but its not exactly ideal to put the winning run in scoring position with 0 out. -

I just got back from Minneapolis. The park really is nice. I did witness something very funny. On Thursday about 1 pm, I went to will call to pick up some tickets. Jeff Cox is in front of me trying to get in the park. "I need to get in the f***ing park. No I don't have an ID. I'm Jeff f***ing Cox. I'm the f***ing 3rd base coach. " He got in. -
All you need to know about Viciedo and 3B is the White Sox moved him to first. I really doubt they have any illusions he'll be anything but poor there, but he's not up for his glove.
