NFL 2021 offseason thread
Dick Allen replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I think Fantasy Football hurts ratings. People go to bars to watch the games instead of staying home where they can watch multiple games at the same time. There are a couple of places by me, pre Covid, that were packed every Sunday. Then, the first weekend of the playoffs, Fantasy leagues are done, the bars have plenty of room. -
As long as the vaccines keep you from dying or being severely ill, everything should be back to around normal once enough get their shots.

What will be interesting is to see how teams reschedule games postponed due to weather and Covid. You would think they wouldn't want to schedule a DH and try to work off days late in the season for the better chance of more of a crowd. But at some point, especially if there is a team like the Cardinals last year, that has a Covid breakout, you are going to have to play the DHs even without fans.

Not a fan of 7 inning DHs or runner on second, but it does make sense during a pandemic. Once this is behind us, hopefully the rules are as well.

On paper better than 2020. On paper 1984 was better than 1983. 1991 was better than 1990. 2001 was better than 2000, 2006 was better than 2005. So nothing is given.

If the Bears pay a huge price for Wentz, it's George McCaskey's fault. 2 lame duck knuckleheads are desperate to save their jobs. Someone with some security would do the right thing. No security, you are throwing a Hail Mary. If it fails, the franchise will suffer from their decisions long after they are gone. -
The haves and have nots financially weren't that far separated, although Steinbrenner did spend some cash. But you had Oakland, KC in the West who were always good. The Angels and Twins who did have their runs the Sox, Seattle and Texas who tried to be the poor man's version of Steinbrenner. It probably wouldn't have made much of a difference, although I think the Sox had the 2nd best record in the AL in 1990 and would have made the playoffs if they were in the East. When teams really started to distance themselves financially, the 6 divisions were in play.

I tend to agree. Their window has closed. Get things lined up for the next window with someone else's vision or you are going to be looking at a pretty bleak decade of football. No one is going to trade this team the dominant QB it needs to have a shot right now. Giving Pace another shot at picking a QB is like the White Sox hiring Greg as the GM after he told them TA as a catcher made some sense.
-
Mahomes did kind of look like a Bears QB with back up tackles. And face it, Leno and whoever they throw in there on the right side aren't much more than back ups.
-
They could be. The 2020 White Sox in a 60 game season, used 9 starters. They are going to have to have some depth especially since every pitcher is increasing his work load.

A difference between Pedro Gomez and a Legit Hall of Fame Baseball Person 2) 1-1, 9th inning. @Eck43 gives up a 2-run homer to Robin Ventura. A's lose, 3-1. My story said Eck took the loss. The Tribune headline erroneously stated, "Eck Blows Another Save, A's Lose." The next game, two days later, the @Athletics are playing the Royals. 1 22 276 Full Dissident @hbryant42 · 6h 3) We're in the manager's office and @TonyLaRussa is fuming that the Trib says Eck blew a save when he didn't. In a group of beat writers and columnists, he looks at Frank Blackman of the Examiner and says, "You see the shit I have to put up with around here? Every day." 1 18 264 Full Dissident @hbryant42 · 6h 4) LaRussa goes on. "This is the type of shit I'm talking about, Frank." He looks around the room. "Where's Hickey?" Then LaRussa looks at the byline and says, "Howard Bryant? Howard Bryant? Who the FUCK is Howard Bryant?" I sheepishly raise my hand. 1 17 276 Full Dissident @hbryant42 · 6h 5) I cover preps. Never been in a big-league manager's office before. I say, "The story says it was tied." LaRussa ignores me, just rails about the bullshit media and the horseshit coverage, shaking his head, muttering for all to hear, "Howard Bryant." 1 18 271 Full Dissident @hbryant42 · 6h 6) A voice interrupts him. "Jesus Christ, Tony. You know we don't write the headlines. The story is right. Leave the kid alone. Why are you embarrassing him?" It was Pedro, whom I didn't know, never met, and worked for the San Jose Mercury News, a rival paper.

Many years ago, a friend of mine, who has also died, and I were drinking a couple of beers at the now closed Jackson Bar and Grill at Jackson and Clinton, right by Union Station before heading to the White Sox game.We were finishing our beers when the bartender gave us another and said this one was on Leon. We looked over to say thanks, and I thought to myself, that guy looks familiar. He had a Boxing coffee table book with him and I quickly figured it out. He was killing time waiting for his train to St. Louis buying strangers drinks.RIP.

Nick Foles won the Super Bowl MVP.

We will see if that really is the issue. You would think if their scouts thought he was going to be the 2018 Folty, JR, I think would gladly cough up $3 million. They have to sign someone.

Dodgers sign Bauer (3/102, opt-outs, 40-45-17)

That is a little more than JR wants to spend. -
Bottom line is this one shouldn’t hurt. Way more likely than not Folty can’t help the White Sox.
-
And why would anyone give the Sox a hometown discount? They wind up trading them anyway.

If Lucas Giolito is anywhere near as good as we hope, his time with the White Sox won’t last more than 3 more seasons. -
So basically Folty was too highly thought of for the White Sox to sign. I still think the Sox need a pitcher who can give them innings. I don't know if Folty was the guy. I would guess there is a chance he is available to be a Knight in April or May. Remember Lincecum? Cease and Kopech are as talented as can be, but you have no idea what you are going to get. You have some sort of idea with Lopez. The 3 guys in front should be fine, but if someone gets hurt, and usually someone does, look out.

Considering he was a guy who said he was going to go with one year deals to maximize his earnings, I don't care how good he is in 2021, getting $45 million in 2022 would have not be so easy. He did well. Isn't his agent getting paid by the hour and not by percentage? -

You don't get those opportunities much when you are looking for a pitcher and claiming to be all about multiple championships. That said, what were the odds even if they showed some interest? I wish they would have at least tried. -

This is really the first year I know of where the main guys have reported done deals and been wrong. A lot of there other stuff is wrong. Their sources get fed bad info all of the time. -

Should The Athletic fire Rosental for getting Brantley wrong? What they should have given Bob some sort of reprimand for was his stance on Tony's no big deal DUI. -

You're just a contrarian who likes to whine but supposedly hates whining. I was just checking your page of posts to see what percentage were actually baseball related, and not general bitching. Not very high.
