What we learned from Opening Day
I don't understand why people are already starting with the bitching. Let's give a history of Yasmani Grandal on Soxtalk. 2019, Sox sign James McCann. Soxtalk: WTF? We have Narvaez and Kevan Smith, why sign this bum. If you're going to sign a catcher, sign Grandal. 2020 Sox sign Grandal. Soxtalk: WTF? We have James McCann. Now Grandal can't do anything right. Of course Gio didn't pitch too badly with Grandal catching, something Soxtalk was silent about. If you recall, Gio can't pitch to Grandal. Madrigal made a bad throw. It cost the Sox the game. We didn't learn anything. Soxtalk has always wondered how the career .340 hitter is on the team. Leury is great, until he goes 0-4, then he should no longer be on a major league field. At least Adam Eaton, who has no power, and bat is so slow, he looks like he's 50 years old, hit a homer. And as I predicted when he got hired, the HOFer baseball person got criticized game one. He doesn't know as much as a message board poster.

What we learned from Opening Day
Obviously Madrigal's bad throw cost them the game. Pujols "grounder" was proof the baseball gods didn't want the Sox to win. The only thing that really concerns me was that last pitch Robert swung at. It was a slider 3 feet outside, and never looked like it would be anything but a ball. Hopefully he either couldn't pick it up for some reason, or was just having a bad night. If he is flailing away at pitches like that from now on, the Sox have a problem.

Yes, add Gonzalez to my list.

My wife doesn’t think I can stay up for the entire game. I am accepting her challenge.

Lamb, Hamilton, Adolfo, Rutherford, Sheets, Zavala are all guys that won’t be contributing to White Sox playoff runs. Burger I am holding out on, I think Rutherford and Adolfo could get you a low prospect with an exceptional skill that needs to be but probably won’t be refined.

Zavala can at least catch. Collins and Yermin, we don’t really know. And catchers get hurt. Might as well keep Zavala around until one of those two shows he can stick. You don’t have to be very good to be claimed as a catcher.

4-1 GT: CWS @ LAA (9:05 PM CT)
There is still some fluff. As I stated in another thread, there are at least a couple guys you could trade for a A ball lotto ticket who wouldn’t require a roster spot. But there are still 5 or 6 guys left, if they lost, most of us would forget even existed in a few months.

COVID-19/Coronavirus thread
It's possible, but not probable. She has had at least 2 antibody tests before her vaccine, and has several covid tests, since the pandemic started. One theory is she could have another coronavirus in her, and it's attacking that. So far, every test she has taken have come up normal. Still awaiting several more results.

COVID-19/Coronavirus thread
First let me thank everyone for their concern. Although she did spend a couple days in the hospital, luckily it doesn't appear to be a life and death issue, she's just been very uncomfortable and can't live anywhere near a normal life for now over 2 weeks. She never knew of any autoimmune issues before this. Her initial pain was in her back, but only for a day or 2. Then it moved to her foot, then both feet, then went up to her knees on both legs. It seems to have stopped there.

COVID-19/Coronavirus thread
My wife had one dose of the Moderna vaccine, and has had nerve pain in her feet and spreading up to her knees for 2 weeks. Her white blood cell count went from 1,100 to 15,000. They think she is having an autoimmune response to the vaccine. They cancelled her second dose.

Backup Catcher (update 3/29 - Lucroy won't make team, asked for release)
Worse case scenario, they will be able to pick up a catcher who plays good defense for next to nothing if their 2 guys don’t work out. Zavala impressed LaRussa too, but remember when he thought Joel Skinner was going to be something.

2021 Spring Training Cuts Thread
I would play them somewhere in the minor league system. And there are plenty of minor leaguers to cut. Considering I would be trading guys who were thought of to be 40 man worthy, I could probably get guys that are better than the worst guys in the system.

Yermin may have made the team..
Taxi squad is my guess

3/28 | White Sox vs Diamondbacks | 3:05PM CT | NBCS Chicago / ESPN1000/MLB.tv
There’s reason to wonder. He has never done it for a full season. But he had one big slump last year and was coming out of it. He hasn’t looked good yet this spring, but maybe he is getting his slump out of the way while it doesn’t count. A guy that swings at as much as he does, is going to have some slumps. But I’m glad the Sox have him.

I hate the NBA buyout market. It's just BS.

White Sox were expected to sign Juan Soto
One thing it shows is Paddy is on the guys who are mid level signers. Too bad they don't give him a full pool every year.

It was a good thing for fans sitting above 1st base desperately seeking souvenirs. He let several fly over and around the Big Hurt and Paulie.

Yes, but the rebuild was necessary. Hemond got replaced because the farm system was so bad. Hawk was bad enough, it brought in Himes and Goldis which solved that problem. The 1985 team was decent, but their top 2 starters were Seaver, who didn’t want to be there anymore, and was about dome anyway, and Burns, who Hawk actually traded, and he never pitched again. They accounted for 450 innings in 1985. And Bob James, who was pretty great in 1985, lost it. They were going to be bad anyway. The Sox lost LaRussa. They actually played better under Fregosi. Acquired and lost Bonilla, in the long run it helped them. Other than that, they didn’t lose anything of value. Hawk did introduce the2 hitting coaches and 2 pitching coaches model, which is now being utilized by most teams. He had no top prospects he could have traded, so the position was child proof. Who knows what someone else would have done that year, but they were going to be bad, and be bad for a while, so at least it was a little interesting, as there seemed to be a trade or a signing of a recently waived past star, Carlton, Foster, plus coach and manager moves almost every week. I do think Hawk’s tenure got JR on the right track for a while. One near miss I read was Bo Jackson was drafted in the 4th round by KC when Hawk was the GM. Everyone assumed he would be a football only guy. Apparently the Sox were going to take him in round 5 if he was still on the board.

He should not have gotten the job, but that team was doomed and headed for a rebuild anyway. He did a couple nice things, acquiring Calderon and picking Bonilla in the rule 5. Of course he traded Bonilla back to the Pirates, but that actually might have helped in the long run as DeLeon eventually became the 1 Dog. And Bonilla being around might have prevented the Sox from drafting at least one of the four in a row they hit big on under Himes. Also, Hawk's tenure convinced ownership it was time to bite the bullet which set up the teams of the early nineties.

They did what GarPax could not do. Trade for a star, hire a real coach. Get rid of dissippointing high draft picks while they still had value. Welcome back to the NBA Chicago Bulls.

Loyola shot 17% but only down 8. You have to figure they will shoot a lot better in the 2nd half.

It is asking a lot for a guy who hasn't played above A ball to debut in the major leagues at a new position. Hopefully they can somehow acquire a legit OF quickly, and move Vaughn back to DH/1B.
