Only JR knew of new TLR DUI upon interview and hire
Dick Allen replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It is interesting that a guy who was supposedly hired with zero tolerance if another one of these pops up, didn't even warrant a discussion whether said behavior should disqualify him from the job. -

I'm guessing it is political. -
I don't know. What gets me is JR is another guy who has a huge problem with the press. Says they get things wrong. Told Terry Boers when he was a respected sportswriter he was full of BS, yet has no problem releasing a statement full of BS.
-
So he's George Costanza. If you really believe it, it is not a lie. Maybe when the Bulls are ready to win he will give Chief Triangle a call.
-
Does anyone really buy JR's statement? I'm sorry, that is telling his customer base he thinks they are dumb. Not based on friendship? Not based on the past? OK, Jerry.

How many times were his teams favored to make the postseason? He is the product of great rosters. I am not going to tell you the Sox are going to lose 90 games because of him. That would be BS. But what wouldn't be BS is to say only once during his managerial career has his team dominated the regular seaon and won the WS. 33 seasons. To think he will do that here at 76 years old, 10 years out of the dugout,, doesn't seem right. I hope it does.. As much as I dislike the hire and the person,, I want him to succeed.. When he left teams, they didn't get worse. The Sox were better under Fredonia. Oakland got better. The Cards won their division 3 of the next 4 years. This isn't the first time the Sox have brought an ex manager back to their dugout after years off the field and in front offices. Bill Veeck brought back Paul Richards to manage in 1976 at age 68, 15 years after his last managerial job. That team was awful, and it wasn't Richards fault. But he was an old 68, fell asleep in the dugout several times and lasted one season. -

What is wild with me is JR has never thought he had to get the most decorated guy available to manage or coach his teams until now. The Sox after LaRussa had journeyman managers in Fregosi and Torborg, then went with first timers Lamont, Bevington, Manuel, Guillen, Ventura before returning to a journeyman in Renteria. The guys he hired with the Bulls were first timer Collins, first time NBA Jackson, first time NBA Floyd, first time Cartwright, journeyman Skiles, first timer Del Negro, first timer Thibs, first time NBA Hoiberg, first time and last time Boylen, before hiring his most decorated in Donovan. Why is it through all that time there was never a must have proven guy that needed to be hired, but suddenly, now there is? I bet Tony is making a lot of money. Probably a lot more than they would have had to pay anyone else. I was old enough to understand things when Tony was here before. It wasn’t like everyone thought they were a witness baseball genius and were horrified when Hawk sent him packing. It was a long time coming. Before Hawk was even broadcasting Sox games let alone being the GM. Tony landed on his feet with a great Oakland roster that should have won more than once. He parlayed that when the A’s were headed down to St. Louis which was probably the best run organization in baseball. The A’s got better after he left. Tony won twice with the Cardinals. Once when the team won the division with 83 wins, a total fluke. And his final season as a wildcard. It is a lot harder to win as a wildcard now than it was then. The Cardinals also won the division 3 of the next 4 years after Tony left. He doesn’t seem like a guy that is going to get you multiple championships on his managing alone. -
Didn't you hear RH? The Sox are so good free agents don't want to come.

Unless you are Jerry Reinsdorf, I don't know how you can say that. For one thing, Hahn didn't threaten to quit, and I doubt someone with the White Sox would even ask him that question. There probably is a chance Bob did. The fact that Scheuler didn't want Tony after the 1995 season made JR back off. I would imagine if RH and KW told him they hated the move, there is a decent chance the call is never made. -

It may actually be true. Apparently after the 1995 season, Tony thought he was coming back, but Ron Schueler balked and stuck with Bevington. He probably saw his power would dry up with Tony around. The next seaon they went after Leyland, but he didn't like how they treated his buddy Gene Lamont, so he went to the Marlins. -
I think they got half a million.

Back in the day of red uniforms and an astroturf infield, they started the night games at 8 pm. The problem with the 6 pm games is the lighting. Maybe the new LED lights change that. I don't know, but they sure did make a huge difference when it got dark.

People who think he is some sort of genius, will be bitching about either his line ups, his bullpen usage, his strategy by the end of the first series this season. He's a better in game manager than Rickey, but remember, Roland Hemond also almost fired him. It's great they can use the failed Hawk as GM experiment to cover up, Tony wasn't this baseball God in the dugout. What made him a HOFer baseball person where the HOFer baseball people who played for him. That's legit. One odd thing, is Tony seemed worried he would have his HOF status taken away if he returned to the dugout, but doesn't even think it could possibly be taken away if he takes out a family driving his SUV hammered.

If he has a media obilgation on day 1 of spring training, he should make it on time. He's the manager, it isn't going to change, but Tony is an ass who will eventually b**** about the media, yet he treats them this way. In the Celebrity Death thread I posted a tweet from an older writer who was covering HS sports in Oakland back when Tony was managing the A's. This guy got bumped up to cover the A's one series against the White Sox. The Sox beat the A's and Eck in the 9th. The headline, which the writer has no part of said Eck blew a save. He didn't. The story had it right, the headline had it wrong. Tony went after this guy the next day. The tribute was to Pedro Gomez who was this guy's competition who told Tony to lay off the guy, quit trying to embarrass him, he knew damn well the guy wasn't responsible for the headline. If you treat people like shit, don't be expected to be put on a throne by he same people.

Plus his father peaked as a 24 year old, then got hurt and never really played a full season again. Had a couple of pretty good partial seasons after that. So he has that example, and a lot of the same genes.
-
Despite that, if you are him, why wouldn't you sign it? It's more money than you will ever need. Are you really concerned about heirs 3 generations from now? For all you know they may be assholes.
-
Exactly. If he is as great as many think, doesn't get hurt, and becomes an all time great, he may have cost himself $100 million, but it's $100 million he would never use. $340 million vs. $440 million will make no difference in his life. Down the road with his heirs, yes. It's a no brainer for him to sign IMO. This is a huge risk for the Padres. It will probably be the last contract of the kid's career. You wonder if he will be able to stay healthy and motivated.

There are 30 of these jobs in the universe. I doubt Hahns track record would give him the ability to pick and choose. If he wants to be a GM it will be of the White Sox. You could tell he was a little off back at the LaRussa press conference. Really most in his spot probably would be. But he will get over it if he hasn't. Just about everyone has had a boss overrule or step on your toes. Sometimes it works out and sometimes the boss should have just let you do your job.

Pretty damning quote. Just tells you the quality of free agent they try to engage.

Giolito Working on a New Pitch..."The Downer"
Dick Allen replied to Ducksnort's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Prior to 2019, most pitches Giolito threw were downers. -

The players don't want a minimum. They have called out teams for not spending, but a minimum also means a maximum.

Jonathan Lucroy signs minor league deal with White Sox
Dick Allen replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Chances aee you wouldn't have to give up very much to acquire him. If you think he is the second coming of Edgar Martinez, you probably would be willing to offer enough to make the White Sox say yes. All the cult heroes over the years have proven why we post on message boards and don't run teams. -
I was pointing out the 2019 ratings which could have been a reason they only had 6 games on last year.
