It's one reason I was hoping for Machado or Harper last year. One less position to worry about and a ton of capital for fans and potential acquisitions. If Harper was the Sox RF and not in Philly, maybe it isn't so important for Wheeler to be near his in laws. Rendon and the 2 big pitchers do that this year, but it doesn't look like the Sox are interested. Even though they claim to have the money and think they are a destination.
-
They aren't going to sign Rendon, but Moncada did tell Renteria he can play the OF.
-
He's supposedly Kyle Schwarber in the field, so if they sign him and put him or Eloy in RF, God help Luis Robert.

It is nice that deals are occurring . Hopefully it will mean an action packed winter meetings next week.

The Myth of RIck Hahn the Closer/PPTer Extraordinaire
Dick Allen replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
He probably has Hahn read his letters to him now. Rick is probably not letting your good ideas get to him because it will make him look bad. I think you should try a different approach. -
Cole to the Yankees: 9 years, $324 million.
Dick Allen replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I get that. But when your twitter has your position listed on the personal twitter, if the info is incorrect, you do open the door to a lot of bashing. Fair or not, people aren't going to separate the two. It wouldn't surprise me if this is correct though. -
The Myth of RIck Hahn the Closer/PPTer Extraordinaire

I'm thinking if he hasn't given you an audience yet, it's probably a sign. -
Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer

Which was even more significant because his total contract was about half of Wheelers. -
Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Dick Allen replied to Soxnfins's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Maybe not be he was who the White Sox determined to be the best fit and the best signing to lead to sustained success. So whoever they now get was not their first choice. They don’t appear to be even attempting the top 2. Maybe that changes, but Cole/Boras, I will believe JR dances with Boras when he actually does. Hopefully their 2nd or 3rd or 4th or whatever choice they actually sign turns out to be the best choice. -

Aren't you at least a little worried that supposedly offering the most money doesn't work either? -

I am sure , during negotiations, the agent would mention he prefers the east coast for family reasons if that is the case. Just like players get NTC to extract more money and guarantees if moved, there is a figure that would have made that mute. I don't know what it is. You don't know what it is, but there is a decent chance that over 5 years it's less than what they paid to Mannys friends last year alone . You either convert or you dont. I don't think it's a good look to be the high bidder and lose ourt, especially if the guy isn't going back to his previous team or going to his childhood dream team. -
Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer

Because the destination teams know how to close deals. Even if you offer the most money, if the player won't sign , you need to offer more if you want to sign him. The Cubs never offered the most money and got snubbed so the player could be by his future mother in law. If that is so important, it makes you wonder why Wheeler is living in Georgia. -
Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Dick Allen replied to Soxnfins's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Never wrote that. But it is an odd excuse, however, even if the White Sox offer was technically higher, it was not a significant sum given the contracts total value. RH said the south side was now a destination. He obviously prefers Philadelphia, and I just mentioned it is possible that finances family might not be the real reason or only reason, but if it was. there are ways around it, especially if you are a destination like the team claims. -

Obviously the White Sox didn't think so. At least realistic ones. All I know is that these drawn out negotiations, granted these weren't as drawn out as years past, but still, a couple of weeks of daily rumors, the Sox are piss poor at conversion. When they convert, you hear nothing, then boom it's done. -

0 for 2 with 2 big whiffs. He should change his name to Palka. -

Javy has a higher lifetime WAR per game than Buehrle. He was a flaw in the WAR system. When the Sox were good, Javy was bad. When the Sox were bad, Javy was good. Can't put WAR numbers on what is going on in the head. -

Yes, he does have a point. Look at what the Sox spend money on. They piss more away per what they spend than anyone. -
Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Dick Allen replied to Soxnfins's topic in Pale Hose Talk
C'mon. They do take the most money most of the time, but not everything is always. When you are talking 1 or 2 million on 118 million, that's really not much of a differenc. The Cubs never seem to lose anyone because they want to be closer to their in laws. -
Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Dick Allen replied to Soxnfins's topic in Pale Hose Talk
First off, while the dollar figure may have been slightly more, we don't know if the present day value was more or the tax ramifications, deferred payments, which probably both offers had, or other things. It could just be that he thinks the Phillies are closer to winning but wants to be classy. But OK, assume his fiances family is the legit reason. And I have never said players take the most money always. Ultimately the offers were too similar to blow that off, But if you bet on it, you will win a lot more than you lose. In fact, if you read this thread, one person mentioned geography as an issue where the Sox may have to bump their offer a bit higher. That poster was me. You are taking the $20 million figure someone just threw out there as gospel. I wouldn't blame the White Sox for that. But $10 million over 5 years? Admittedly, that is a bit much too, but the price of business. If it's time to win, let's get the best horses. -

Dick Allen replied to Soxnfins's topic in Pale Hose Talk
All I know is that there was a figure. You are taking this out of context. Ray Ray made up the $20 million figure. I just wrote I doubt it would have been that much, and I think that is very reasonable. -
Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Dick Allen replied to Soxnfins's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I doubt it would have been that much, but when everyone thought it would have taken $10 million more than what they were comfortable with, most, including you, thought that was a small price to pay. There was a figure where the fiance's family in NJ wouldn't have mattered. It's pretty binary. You either sign the player or you don't. BTW, I know you like to write Dick as much as possible, but grow up. It isn't fooling anyone. In fact, it's a lot of bluster, just like the Phillies. -
Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Dick Allen replied to Soxnfins's topic in Pale Hose Talk
They didn't do what it took to convert. That's a fail. Unfortunately to convert this one it would have taken a bit more than more money. To think the White Sox didn't know that would be claiming his agent was negligent. Maybe how much more didn't make sense. This may all work out for the best. But still, if you can't convert when you don't offer the most money, and now can't convert when you do, what is there to hang your hat on? Hahn went on and on how the White Sox were now a destination. Reality says, not so much. -

I am sure the White Sox weren't blindsided by him picking less money. I am sure there was a level where that wouldn't have been an issue. -

I don't know if it's a good thing to leak out that your offer was higher, or bad that the higher offer was blown off. -

I did mention earlier location could mean the Sox need to be a bit higher than Philly. I thought he lived in GA, didn't know the NJ angle, but enough money or first class airline tickets could fix that. One thing is for certain, the White Sox are not quite yet the destination RH claimed in his end of the season address.
