  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 21, 2018 -> 06:56 AM) Arming teachers would cost each school at least a million bucks minimum. I'm sure that money will just fall from trees. I don't think I would want my kid at a school with all those guns around anyway. There is a pretty good chance there will be a slip up and they will wind up in the wrong hands.
  2. QUOTE (Tony @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 07:13 PM) It seems like it's about 85% speculation. It does seem that way, but it’s about the third or fourth time it has been mentioned this offseason, so maybe there is some smoke here.
  3. QUOTE (Tony @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 06:12 PM) Love that they are embracing the tank. I understand why they are doing it, but I do hope all sports do something eventually to prevent this type of thing. Being horrible on purpose should not be rewarded.
  4. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 05:53 PM) Last year's line adds up to a 114 wRC+, which was good for 107th best in the MLB (min. 50 PA). IMO, we need to aim higher than "outside the top 100" for our competitive-window cleanup hitter. And that's assuming he wouldn't decline any, which is possible, but can't be considered likely. Again, I think it's easy to like the homer total, but we ignore the lack of everything else that he brings to the offensive table. He's just not as good as his reputation suggests. Your point is good, Moustakas just isn't that guy. Where did Machado rank?
  5. Felicio, Nwaba, Payne, new Bulls starters. Lopez, Holiday, and Grant to the pine.
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 04:55 PM) I think it's a combo of him getting old and being injured a lot, along with a new coaching staff and a team that won't win the Super Bowl next year anyway. I think they would rather get a guy they might need 2 to 3 years from now they can integrate into their system. Maybe, but don’t you agree even with a new staff, the Bears are under a lot of pressure to win as much as possible in 2018? I get looking down the road, but IMO there is an urgency here.
  7. QUOTE (Jimmy3Putt @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 04:49 PM) Let's be honest, there's 0% chance we get one of the big three. I'd offer him the Melky contract, maybe even go an extra year. We have the money and the long term need. It is zero if you don’t try. And signing him probably takes you out of Machado, but if you were really in on Machado, everyone else except Harper is still on the table. And if everyone is worried about his OBP, Machados wasn’t higher in 2017,things can happen.
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 04:28 PM) Bears had most $ committed to Guard in the league and were only getting average play. means that money has to count elsewhere, and not just buying crappy depth. That’s tue, but they aren’t anywhere near the cap, and probably won’t be in 2018 either. They must think Sitton has slipped and won’t bounce back. because they are in no position to let good players go. He does seem to be banged up a lot of the time.
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 04:29 PM) his statement was very carefully worded to actually produce nothing. He said turn into "machine guns," which is a huge point of debate on why these were legal in the first place. Weren’t they going to be outlawed after Las Vegas? I guess the deal was at least one more massacre then the bump stock will be the sacrificial lamb.
  10. can someone explain KC? Supposedly they offered Hosmer at least $100 million. Now they say they don’t have the funds for Moustakas or LoMo.
  11. QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 02:40 PM) It's amazing whatever topic you're talking about the other party doesn't know what they're talking about. I think the Russian interference is a bunch of bulls*** and there's plenty of evidence for that. I don't believe in American exceptionalism. Isn't that your whole shtick in this thread?
  12. QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 01:56 PM) I think it is a 2nd and a 5th actually. No, that is for teams that exceed the luxury cap. They also lose $1 million in their international bonus pool.
  13. I suppose the other argument against could be if it is the Sox or Yankees like the GM suggested, the Yankees are probably only going to go one year. If that's the case, he could be the back up to the back up next year.
  14. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 02:37 AM) All of the hitters do it. Collins for example faced Brian Clark just like that and didn't swing. Dick Allen used to do it in spring training games.
  15. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 01:12 PM) I'm pretty confident in saying that the White Sox won't be forfeiting the 45th pick and $2 million in draft capital to sign Mike Moustakas. I think they definitely would if they think there is a legit chance of being contenders in 2019. I've heard Hahn say 2020, even the most optimistic Hawkeroo thinks 2020. But they did beat their rebuild target by a season in 1990. Of course at the deadline that year they added Jerry Hairston, so he could get his 10 year pension, and Minnie Minoso, who the commissioner said no. Oakland added Willie McGee and Harold Baines. Ozzie popped off. The still won 94 or 95 games. One of the craziest fun seasons ever. Winning games on wild pitches. Getting no hit and winning without even a save situation...
  16. QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 12:58 PM) The only way it makes sense is if they really think Burger can stick at 3B. Hopefully, Moustakas would play well and they could slide Burger in when leaves. If he plays poorly maybe they would be stuck with him so it's going to depend on those "option $" If, no matter how he does, leaves money to add from the top shelf and not the bargain bin, then they should go for it IMO. I think that is how they should look at it. I have to think free agent prices are going to be a lot higher next year, because all of the spenders are going to be players. If you can take advantage of that now, then take advantage of that now.
  17. Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump Mitt Romney, who was one of the dumbest and worst candidates in the history of Republican politics, is now pushing me on tax returns. Dope! 6:34 AM - Feb 25, 2016 Now an endorsement. Will Mitt ask him to release his tax returns again?
  18. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 12:48 PM) If the Royals were interested in Hosmer, they might as well go after Mous and sign a 1B for about the same/a little over what Hosmer got annually (and also not as long). Supposedly they are pulling the plug on any hope of trying to compete. I had been typing lately that opt outs aren't all that terrible for teams, but with the White Sox, giving an opt out after a season or two doesn't make much sense, unless, you are thinking of flipping him this summer, and then going after Machado/Donaldson, or trying to compete with him at 3B in 2019 and going after someone else if he opts out. I have been on the Moustakas to the White Sox boat for a few years. The way Hawk talks about him, you know the White Sox really like the player. That said, I really don't know what a bargain is for him. If they signed him to a 5 year $65 million deal, that still leaves a lot more cash around the next couple of year than taking Matt Kemp's deal for a prospect, and you have a 3B. I don't think paying full price with opt out(s) makes much sense.
  19. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 12:36 PM) Given that he has a draft pick tied to him, he will cost a hefty sum and his WAR the last six seasons are 2.2, 0.7, 3.7, 0.5, 1.2 and 3.4 (2017 to 2012), I would much rather have Yolmer Sanchez for 2018 and see if he improves upon his 2.1 WAR. The 0.7 was in 27 games. And he really only started to hit 3 or 4 years ago. It depends what kind of a bargain he is. I wouldn't be too worried about a 2nd round pick being lost. He's definitely better than what you would expect a second rounder to be. Boras being is agent probably means the bargain cannot be met.
  20. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 12:25 PM) Ugh. I hate that talking point, and I think the most offensive part of it is the idea that we can sort humanity into "good guys" and "bad guys." Everyone is technically a "good guy" with a gun until they do something that makes them a bad guy... Yes, I just wonder how many "good guys" always carrying a gun, may, for a moment when they are angry or drunk or irritated, become "bad guys". I'm sure the number is greater than zero. The US has 4.4% of the world population and 42% of it's guns. It seems the theory of more guns being the solution has already been debunked.
  21. I doubt Shields was injured enough to Kibosh the trade. It may have meant SD eat a little more money or take a different prospect. But the prospect was one who had not played, so I would imagine that wasn't very likely.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 09:29 AM) Again, this is complete libel. Kenny Williams hasn't done the same thing. He did not create two sets of paperwork in order to be able to give an incomplete medical history to another team while hiding the teams true findings in order to fool other teams in an effort to hide injuries. This is exactly what was found by MLB. Yes, the Sirotka caper is riduculous to blame on KW, and I love finding things to blame on KW. Gord Ash waived his opportunity at a physical.
  23. QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 08:52 AM) Mitt will probably win and GOP will say it's YUGE when that state will probably will never go blue. Trump will claim his endorsement put him over the top.
  24. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Feb 20, 2018 -> 09:04 AM) The point isn't to show that school shootings aren't a problem. One shooting is one too many. The point is to keep the debate honest and truthful. You should want that. The minute you start overblowing the problem and using false statistics, the other side latches on to #fakenews and all that nonsense. Overblowing the problem? Good God man, someone just killed 17 people in a school. And it is a pattern that is developing. Whether that has happened 17 times or 6 or 2, what difference does it make? Something beyond thoughts and prayers, and the NRA check has cleared needs to be done. It's too bad it's human nature to believe bad things like that happen to others. We all need to start acting like the victims of these massacres were people we know and love. I'm pretty sure Little Marco wouldn't be as disconnected if it was his kids' school that got shot up, or his brother at some concert some sick ass was mowing people down. Or his cousin at the movies when someone decides to kill people.
  25. QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Feb 19, 2018 -> 09:23 PM) You do realize it's not that simple right? If he plays well and opts out the Redsox maybe happy they paid extra (probably about 10 million based on what EE got last year) but got their LF/DH for two years. The problem is baseball is not that simple and tidy. He could play poorly or be injured for the first year he then walks away like a boss with most of his money paid upfront. Or he could have a down year or be injured for two years then opt out in year three. Or he could be a disappointment entirely and opt in for the entire duration. The point is regardless of what happens JDM is covered and will come out ahead. The redsox absorbed a terrible amount of risk with no upside whatsoever. In fact in the best case scenario they pay a DH 50 million for two years. Which is beyond crazy. You make it sound like he would have signed a 2year contract. No way. If he sucked, they were going to have to pay him for 5 years anyway. This way, they can have him for 2 years, and he is only opting out if he played well enough to justify the 2 years. For some reason, many teams that have players with opt outs tend to re sign them to longer more expensive deals when they opt out. In 2 years Martinez will be an older, most likely less valuable version of himself. If he opts out, it means the Red Sox made a great deal for 2 years. If he doesn’t, they would be in the same spot without an opt out. If the Red Sox are disciplined enough to realize 32 year old DHs tend not to be worth what JD would need if he opted out, because some team won’t, the opt out will work in their favor.. it is a great thing for the player. I am not saying it isn’t. They have a shot at even more money while guaranteed their entire contract if they suck or get hurt. But they would have had the later anyway. I would thin, unless he really hates it there, it’s more likely the opt out will not be used.
