  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 12:58 PM) He got a $600,000 bonus. While not the biggest, he was on the podium with the other big July 2 signings for the White Sox and was the Sox second biggest signing that year. Where did it rank overall? Obviously it was more than some, but not one that is given to someone they think will be a top 10 overall prospect in 2 years. I'm guessing no other team offered him more than the White Sox, and if it was then considered what he is considered now, or even anywhere near, his bonus would have been significantly higher. When you are signing 16 year olds, there aren't many sure things. They are pretty much all lottery tickets.
  2. QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 12:37 PM) I was hunting when I was 10 with both rifles and shotguns. Good for you. Why is it there is a bigger problem with people getting shot individually and massively more in the US than any other country, where there are more guns than anywhere else, when learning how to use a gun only teaches kids and adults alike responsibility? How are these other countries able to survive with a fraction of the guns, a minuscule defense budget, not enough nuclear bombs the blow the world up 10 times over.... One of my roommates in college had a rifle. He was a hunter and kept it in the closet. I was scared to death of that thing.
  3. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 07:17 AM) He was more than a lottery ticket, and he "just happened to explode" such that within 2 months of the trade he was a top 100 prospect and rising fast. The Sox didn't know what they had in Tatis; and they probably didn't really know what they were getting in Shields (how many Sox scouts were in Seattle?). Shouldn't have given a prospect of any sort for Shields- pure salary dump was more than enough. Considering his signing bonus, I don't think anyone knew about Tatis. It was a lottery ticket that exploded. Whether it translates into a long major league career is yet to be seen.
  4. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 12:15 PM) I guess he shouldn't count but figured he was part of that 24. Colon and Thompson (I may be missing someone else here) shouldn't technically count either because they're not on the playoff rosters. You did really well. They are counting guys who basically played for the teams. Santiago, Boone Logan, even Ryan Rayburn.
  5. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) In no particular order: 1) Safety/Protection. Rabid animals, predators like Coyotes and Wolves killing your families livelihood, etc. Not everyone lives 10 feet from each other in cities. They actually have to deal with nature. And yes, personal protection from other people. 2) Hunting. It's a good way to teach patience and calmness. Having a 10 year old in 2017 sit out in the middle of nature for 4 hours waiting for a 2 minute window of action would be highly beneficial IMO. 3) I think it's a great way to learn about safety and protocol and responsibility. Most people who are anti-guns have never touched a gun and are afraid of them. Putting them in your hands is an entirely different experience and learning at a young age their awesome power is a good thing. 4) Fun. It's fun as hell to shoot cans or other targets like a Tannerite pack (target with a small explosive that goes boom when you hit it from a distance). How many people have been killed by coyotes and wolves in the US the last 10 years? California has one reported death by coyote. That was in 1981. And coyotes are coming into urban areas, so if you need them for coyotes and other personal protection, why shouldn't a city dwelling 10 year old have a cache of firearms? And I know the responsibilty and respect, and patience and calmess argument, but they are 10 year olds. Their minds aren't fully developed. They make poor decisions.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 10:40 AM) Learn to handle it with respect and knowledge in a setting where guns are sometimes required. Why would they be required? And you still have a mind not fully developed that would have access and know how in using it. A lot more could go wrong than any benefit IMO. If they aren't old enough to drink or smoke or drive, I don't see why they should be more than fine to shoot guns.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 09:52 AM) Supposedly there was a stink rose about the Hawks doing it by someone else in the league, so they did a pretty deep investigation. There was some amount of thought it would be disallowed. It was kind of odd, and very convenient for the Blackhawks. I know when I first heard it, I was a bit skeptical (still am) and if it were another team, I would have probably laughed about it.
  8. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 10:02 AM) If you live in the country, it's actually not a bad idea to teach your kids how to use guns. I'm not saying a 5 year old, but 10, 12, 14, yeah. I did as a kid. Assault rifles, no, but rifles, shotguns, even pistols, yes. What is the benefit of a 10 year old shooting rifles and shotguns and pistols?
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 09:07 AM) According to DTJ its for kids to get into shooting. Ear plugs apparently dont exist Guns in the hands of children is something we need more of.
  10. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 02:16 PM) Four of the largest rebuilding trades by the Sox ended up with the other team making the playoffs. Eaton - WAS Sale - BOS Quintana - CHC Frazier/Robertson/Kahnle - NYY BONUS: Clippard - HOU I read where there are 24 ex-White Sox in the playoffs this year. So there is room for s***ty players on playoff rosters.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 08:59 AM) It's always 75% public relations. That's not a bad thing! Public relations is not a bad thing! People need to feel like the government is paying attention during these things. You've also got an entire island that is basically going to be dealing with PTSD - just having the tiniest bit of emotional support will help. The government needs to be compelled to pay attention during these things. I don't care if it is about him and he is a totalitarian racist jerk, our population put this racist in charge of the government and the government needs to function. People are hurt if the government can't do normal things, and yes that even includes press releases. Air Force One isn't that expensive - buy one less F-35 and it's basically free. Don't be penny wise, pound foolish. His comments prove he is not paying attention. Send someone else with a clue. And one less F-35 doesn't make it free. That's money that could be spent on something that actually mattered, not that our government is capable of doing that, but at least potentially it is. I just wonder when he goes to Las Vegas today how much it will help the loved ones of those killed and the wounded when he takes credit for the police response, and then goes on about how now is not the time to bring up gun control. I'm sure there are people in hospitals with Obamacare, and he's doing everything he can to make it go away. Maybe he will spin personal bankruptcy can be very lucrative.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 08:50 AM) It might have been too early given how slow any response to this one has been, but Presidents heading to disaster areas in this country to both speak to the local politicians and actually see things for themselves is not a bad thing. Yes, but this particular person seems to make it a public relations thing about him. His "speaking to the local politicians" was a joke. It was a replay of the cabinet meeting where they all say something nice about him. God bless the mayor of San Juan who called it what it was, a publicity stunt. With other presidents, even the ones I didn't particularly care for, there always was some good in these trips. Not with this guy. It's always about him. Just save the taxpayers money and keep Air Force One in DC. And he is out of touch. Tossing paper towels to needy people? Telling people to have a good time? Giving people flashlights but saying they don't need them anymore when less than 7% of the island has had its electricity restored? "joking" about what this natural disaster will do to his budget? Calling Katrina a real catastrophe, implying this one wasn't based on the current death count, which by the way has now doubled?
  13. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 08:19 AM) Just got my annual letter, "Your healthcare plan will no longer be offered in 2018. If you wish to continue coverage, you will need to select a new plan by January 1." I can't wait to see how much more coverage they take away while charging me more. The ACA - the gift that keeps on giving!!! It was flawed and needed to be worked on, but Trump and his crew have sabotaged it to make it worse for everyone, therefore pissing people off and agreeing with him. But there will be millions who won't be able to see the game the guy is playing with so many lives, and wind up on his side, with something far worse, while padding the pockets of the people who already have money they will never spend. Maybe if he keeps the unnecessary deaths in the thousands he will be very proud and not consider it a real catastrophe.
  14. What was the purpose of Trump's trip to Puerto Rico?
  15. QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:36 PM) Most political scientists and psychologists are liberals....so meh to your "research". Yep. The only way to determine if research is legit or not is to find out where the researcher is politically. If they are liberal, their brains don't work correctly. That's why people don't understand trickle down economics works tremendously, and global warming is a hoax, because scientists are liberal.
  16. Trumps PR trip included a meeting with PR leaders where he had some speak to praise his administration and ultimately, of course, him. I wonder how he is going to make Las Vegas about him tomorrow. He also handed out so,e flashlights and told the citizens they didn't need them anymore. Power is back to almost 7% of the residents.
  17. QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 06:43 PM) guess you didn't read the previous post that I grew up there...so I'm well versed with them. again...next. It was nice try. Once It was pointed out you were doing the exact thing you were critizing me for doing you were able to come up with something. But, you are still 1800 miles away, and you have no idea if I ever lived in AZ or not, which apparently would make me an expert. It is typical of your party. You do the exact things you find fault with others doing.
  18. QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 06:25 PM) did I miss something? Has there not been widespread blame towards Republicans for this? Personally I really don't care...I take it with a grain of salt. Just gets old. Hell...wasn't even 5 minutes after this happens and that old scab Hillary is politicizing it...and everybody jumps on board. Apologize to the people that haven't...but I'm seeing an awful lot of it. How long does it take Trump to politicize a terorist attack abroad?
  19. QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 06:18 PM) Not sure it'd be a waste of money. Not very plausible right now...but don't think it'd be a waste. Venture to say how many of those gang members are illegals from Central America and Mexico? Not arguing the vast majority is gang related...but why is that tolerated...and rare instances like these shootings all of a sudden a cry for major change? Make light of AZ with your "bad hombres" comment...cool...but it's an issue out here. But I'm sure you knew that from 1800 miles away... As you make comments about Illinois gun laws. lMAO.
  20. QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 05:36 PM) Ahhh...by that brilliant argument then we should all have Illinois type gun laws? That'll fix it!!!! I live in AZ...I don't have to check out s***. We have open carry as well as being able to conceal carry without a license. Besides the random things you'd find in a large city...we don't have a fraction of the crap that goes Chicago. And AZ still has to deal with being a border state. Bottom line is no amount of legislation is going to stop things like this no matter how much lefties whine over it. But what about all the bad hombres? But thanks for the confirmation Trumps wall is a waste of money. The problem in Chicago is there are over 100,000 gang members. The vast majority of shooting is gang related, unfortunately a lot of innocent people get caught in the middle.
  21. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) It's time to stop ragging on the current President. To borrow from Dennis Green: He is who we thought he was. It's now time to shift the focus to the people who can and should remove him from office. He is unqualified, undignified and ill-prepared. Since there's no where to Peter Principle him up, the only other place to go is out. Time to yell at the House to impeach and remove. And yes, I understand who is next in line and next in line after that. I think the republicans are using him for these tax cuts because he is more than willing to lie through his teeth. I think once the cuts go through or once they fail, a lot of these politicians who have looked the other way will turn on him. IMO, this is unprecedented behavior. Pence is bad IMO ( I know a couple of people who live in Indiana who were doing cartwheels he got his current job), but he's better than Trump. Time to put in the second stringer.
  22. Guns per capita in the US has doubled the last 50 years. Except for 2 countries, the US has about triple the guns per capita as any other country. More guns, more murders. Pretty simple.
  23. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 02:19 PM) https://twitter.com/calebecarma/status/915281461435092992 Throwing paper towels into the crowd like he is giving away t shirts at a concert. He's like Oprah. "you get a roll of paper towels, and you get a roll of paper towels...."
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 02:06 PM) To be fair, one of the reasons Stanton missed the end of a year was because he was hit in the face by a 95 MPH fastball. That's not injury prone, that's bad luck. He has been prone to lower body injuries in the past, primarily quads, hamstrings, and groins, which are not good. I would trust the Sox training staff to take care of him. For the right price, I'd absolutely consider it. I believe he has an opt out in 3 or 4 years, and I imagine he'd use that to get one more long-term deal, but maybe not. That's the problem. If he's worth the contract, it gets ripped up and you have to give him another one, or be smart enough to walk away. IMO, acquiring him, unless you are ready to win now or very soon, is something that can only blow up in your face. No matter what, you are going to be getting a player who eventually will be paid a lot of money to really suck.
  25. According to Trump, Katrina was a real catastrophe, as opposed to Maria.
