  1. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 04:51 PM) I honestly don't think Coats is definitively no good, but I don't think there's much ceiling there so I don't begrudge the Sox for risking him. Yes. If the goal is sustained excellence, a guy with a mediocre ceiling is no big loss, if he is a loss.
  2. Houston will improve their rotation. It really doesn't hurt you in the standings ifyou get the pitcher at the Winter Meetings or a day before the season starts.
  3. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 12:12 PM) Read the first sentence of my post again; and no, my point was that you don't give up on a player after 58 plate appearances. Sure you do. Most players never even get the 58 PAs.
  4. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 12:09 PM) It's not a bad answer, but I think it doesn't hold up. In his example you're dealing with a good that is largely fungible and not scarce (a car). Said student does NOT risk being unable to find another car to use when he/she graduates. It is different when dealing with a top of the rotation starter. Should we trade Q today, there's no guarantee we are able to find/have one when we're ready to compete. Obviously, if we're ready to compete in year 4 versus year 3 it changes things a little bit. And they don't pay him much the next couple of years especially. Not trading him now, the White Sox risk injury and declining performance. Other than that, very little IMO. The thought I have is if he continues to pitch like he has pitched, if they hang on to him, how would the offers differ next offseason, or when he has 2 years left on his deal? I think the packages would sound about the same. It is a guy who has 4 years at a bargain price. Those guys generally don't get traded, and generally you don't have to hear how the other team has prospects off limits. Pitchers being traded of Q's status have been guys with 2 years or less left on their deals. What Sale commanded should have been unprecedented. Same with Eaton, and now with Q.
  5. Coats will be 27 years old in February Future Sox had hit between 14-18 in a horrible system last year. Garcia was ranked 12 in a better system. It is an upgrade. Coats is organizational filler who may get small stints filling in for injured players on the major league level, A lot of guys have put up big numbers in Charlotte the last few years.
  6. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 11:24 AM) I don't expect Coats to be anything special. That said, I do find it annoying that his "shot" in the Majors was 58 plate appearances, and many on this board think that's enough to make a decision on him. Didn't Bregman begin his MLB career 0-34? And, my favorite example: Mike Trout's first 60 career PAs: .185/.250/.352 Jason Coats' first 58 career PAs: .200/.298/.340 if Coats was a highly touted 19 year old like the guy you are comparing him to, you may have a point. But think about how many White Sox outdid Trout their first 60 PA. This team is loaded.
  7. I really hope if the Astros make the deal, AJ Reed is a throw in buy low guyI know a lot of people are down on him, but his minor league track record is awesome, and although he was a bit younger which does make a difference, look at Anthony Rizzo's first couple hundred PA in the major leagues. Brutal. This guy is huge with a lot of potential.he could become a cult hero.
  8. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jan 6, 2017 -> 03:25 PM) I can't believe they DFA Coats whiled keeping 4-6 other guys, none of whom can hit .330 ++ in AAA. Avi Garcia career AAA line .367/.412/.532 Coats is just a guy. All these other guys are just a guy too most likely, but at least they have some sort of break out skill.
  9. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Jan 6, 2017 -> 01:41 PM) Yea I know he'll probably clear and be sent down but it's clear no one in the org is even remotely thinking of giving him a fair shot. Avi is 24 with over 1000 AB's and we know he's awful. But it is what it is. If you are conceding no one will claim him, not giving him a shot seems to be the consensus. I am not a huge fan of this move. Willy seems to be a high k low OBP guy, but he is a couple of years younger so we will see. Most waiver claims turn into nothing.
  10. So USA taxpayers ARE paying for the Mexico wall. Mexico will just pay them back, or something.
  11. Except for assists, Jimmy's numbers are all better than the numbers DRose put up his MVP year. He is annoying speaking in the 3rd person, and all that crap, but he has made himself a top 10 player.
  12. I don't mind Geo, but his yips are like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. The highlight of this is we now may see Geo Soto squared battery.
  13. Abreu put up a .900 OPS the second half last year, and Fangraphs had him better defensively than Eric Hosmer. If no one wants to give up anything for him keeping him isn't a bad deal.
  14. My best friend looks a lot like Ryan Pace. I guess he got yelled at standing in line at the Whole Foods last night.
  15. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 5, 2017 -> 02:50 PM) On the bright side, his value is only higher now then it was in the off-season. Yes, but since there almost certainly would be draft picks involved, in season, its not clear where those picks are in the draft and who is available. There probably is very little chance he is dealt during the season. But might as well have your ducks in a row for next June. Realistically, he probably has to go.
  16. Tony Romo can't stay healthy behind Dallas' offensive line. How in the world is he going to stay healthy with the Bears who had 3 QBs knocked out in 2016?
  17. If he's in the game, of the draft picks and available QBs, Romo is probably the best bet to get the offense humming next year, but also the worst bet to be able to answer the bell a reasonable amount of times.
  18. John Fox has never been a media darling, and Pace was unavailable to the media all season except for the team orchestrated interview with Jeff Joniak the last day of the season. Either loosen Fox up, and tell him to be at least a little more straight with the media, or have Pace available. The media didn't like Lovie either because they thought they were being talked down to. It is understandable. Most people want to be treated with at least a little respect. The media has a job to do. Even if they are a pain, without it, there probably are a few less zeroes on their bank account balances.
  19. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 5, 2017 -> 11:13 AM) Pace said Alshon did a good job taking care of his body this year. Yeah, he had 4 weeks rest. And they also said injuries weren't an excuse, then mentioned injuries 19 times. These things are a team produced scripted sound bite. Make sure you take the blame, then lay it off a bit. If you look at the transcript from last year, the quotes are virually the same. In training camp, Pace said he expected to compete.
  20. It seems he may be a bit pricey but Mike Glennon could be an option. Would hate to throw a ton of cash his way.
  21. At least the Bears staff gets to coach the Senior Bowl. That should give them a better look at a couple of the QBs. Supposedly, it is where Dallas became intrigued with Prescott.
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 5, 2017 -> 08:43 AM) I think Hawk would golf all 12 months if he could(and he probably does). I dont even think that is in question They can do that if they want, as well. Except for day games, they could golf every day. Nice work if you can get it.
  23. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 5, 2017 -> 08:05 AM) if you are retiring, you arent really looking to fall back on another career. You are looking for somewhere sunny with a lot of golf courses Besides, baseball only announcers are semi retired anyway. They already get 6 months a year to golf. How much more do they need?
  24. His Hawkins take seems to fit right in with Courtney's performance the last few seasons. The Collins take is with a grain of salt IMO. He's seen him twice. Kopech? Who knows? He's seen him pitch more than almost everyone here, but his criticisms, and they really weren't dire, for both seem to be correctable. The one thing that does concern me a bit with Collins is many guys drafted as catchers but are expected to shift to other positions because of defensive concerns bats seem to not live up to the hype. One exception is Paulie. I think there is hope for him as a catcher. Orton seems to be a pretty good instructor.
