Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Dick Allen replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 01:21 PM) Looks like Pirates sports writer's and the fan base really want Huntington to make a Q trade happen. http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/zeise-i...es/201612220170 The Pirates are a lot like the White Sox in that they shop at Marshall's not Saks 5th Ave. And when they are mentioned for a big name, like the Sox and big name free agents, at best, they come in second. So until they actually get a Q or someone else, it seems the people who know them best will believe it when they see it, and don't really think it will happen. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 12:45 PM) Right, I wrote this last night but the post-mortems on the Sale trade seem to have indicated a timeline where Boston had agreed to a framework of Moncada/Kopech and then the flurry of Nats aggressive to get Sale came as the sox were putting heat on Boston to include Devers. I guess Sox at some point decided there was no escalation short of turner that Nats could offer to overcome Moncada as a headliner and moved forward. So yes, some team may have the basic framework and sox are putting heat on the non headliner, because it was not the case that Boston's final agreed to piece was Moncada, it was Basabe/Diaz. And supposedly the Nats upped their offer when it became apparent Boston took the lead. Once it's going to happen, all the bluffs have to stop. I would really be surprised if Lunhow doesn't come up with something enticing enough unless the Sox cannot live without Bregman. To me, he has to be the GM that values Q the most. This is like a 100 day Ebay auction. Some BS bids the first 98 or 99 days, then things get a little serious the final 15 minutes. -

QUOTE (Real @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 12:39 PM) why are the Sox compromising in any Quintana deal, makes no sense. deal him at the deadline if you're not even getting what you want for him. glasnow as a centerpiece? we need position players so badly. They aren't compromising. They are looking for another home run. Hopefully in a few years, we all think all of these trades were home runs. For the White Sox. -

Could be that some team has met the price asked, and it's time for all the others to try to top it or look for another 5.0 WAR a year pitcher that is controlled for 4 more years at $38 million. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 12:12 PM) The Rockies front office is run by a Random Number Generator, so it doesn't do any good to speculate based on need. On the other hand, you can never count them out. Just because they spent $90 million and haven't clearly upgraded their team? Maybe they have some sort of plan, but if they do, it isn't very clear. It does seem to be run by idiots, but then again Sandy Alderson is supposed to be quite bright, yet he seems to be allergic to CFers. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 11:57 AM) NBA season doesn't really become important until after Christmas. This is about what I expected prior to their scorching first 3 games. But their bench is as terrible as I imagined. NBA season really doesn't become important until the playoffs anymore. The Bulls may make the playoffs, but they will be eliminated in short order if they do. Just another unremarkable very profitable year for them. It would be nice if they had the balls to fire not only Gar, but Pax as well. This isn't a case of Gar screws everything up, Pax is a genius. He has been around a long time, and has failed. He has unconditional love for any player he drafts, and unconditional hatred eventually for any coach he hires. I really thought he would be a good exec, but he sucks. Hoiberg can go to, but if Gar or Pax is still around, what's the point? Clean house or bust, but it won't happen, they are printing money.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 09:47 AM) Different tune to what he was saying on MLBN last night. For sure. But I still think especially if Meadows isn't on the table, a ploy to get other teams to make their best offer. -

Dick Allen replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The show on MLBN I was watching yesterday, where Heyman basically said there was very little chance Q went to Pittsburgh or the Yankees, whoever the host was mentioned when twitter got all in a flux about the Nats and Sale, the Red Sox made the trade. He mentioned this to Heyman and said can it be Houston will be trading for Q soon basically asking Heyman if these insiders were being used, and of course Heyman said he is sure it has happened but really doubts anyone is being used. They are all being used. Otherwise, there really is very little use for them if you think about it. Maybe Pittsburgh will give up the prospects, maybe the threat Q is off the table makes Houston up its offer. But obviously someone is getting antsy. -

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 08:45 AM) Ooooh, Dick, got me again, right? Uh, that would be a no. I just don't like this prospect who is a member of the Pirates. Oh horrors! You will also note he dropped in BA's rankings as well. And to think only a year ago you (and others) were lecturing me from your high horse about the seminal, generational talents of Frazier and Samardzija. You might want to re-read the Samardzija trade thread. Of course Trayce Thompson is a prospect you build a team around. And when he was Glasnow's age, an age where you say he should be ready for a rotation spot, he was hitting .229 in AA striking out at an alarming rate. -

QUOTE (reiks12 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 08:40 AM) At one point a poster should be completely OK writing "heh, you are right how silly of me" It is a wonder nobody does it. I guess everyone needs to be correct 100% of the time. I really don't know much about Glasnow, but he was highly regarded, I don't see how his stock could have dropped, unless he has injury concerns. If he had shoulder issues, that is a big red flag. But to conclude a 22 year old is his 24 inning performance his first call up is absurd. He is 6'8", so mechanics can get really out of whack. I'd prefer some position players. The Sox need them, and they do have a lower bust rate, but this guy is a top of the line prospect. That is without doubt. -

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 08:32 AM) Decline in prospect terms means they aren't making the progress they once were. May be overcome, or it may not be, but it needs to be discounted from player value. Yeah, his 1.87 ERA with 133 strikeouts and 65 hits allowed in 110 2/3 innings in AAA is a huge drop off. What do you have against facts? -

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 08:22 AM) He's 22 lol He has been too good for GreenSox. He likes mediocre guys. Glasnow is 22 has a 2.06 ERA in 500 minor league innings and struck out over 1 an inning during his brief call up. I want the Sox to get position players, but in decline, isn't ready for a rotation spot and should be at 22 is just so far against what he has posted about far lesser prospects. It has to be a joke. Now he isn't happy with prospects. -

QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 01:59 PM) Well lets say the Pirates are including Meadows and not including Glasnow. If they get Quintana that would give them a Cole-Quintana-Taillon-Glasnow frontline for the next 3 years plus a whole bunch of pretty strong pitching prospect on the verge of becoming top prospects themselves. With age coming for Lester and Arrieta intent on pursuing free agency it would give the Pirates a pretty big boost nabbing Quintana. Pirates have a lot of talent, not quite Yankees level but in that tier. The way they draft they can withstand a hit to the farm to gain a pitcher like Quintana. They went from almost trading Cutch to trade the farm for Quintana a window is open? I have no doubt they would love to add Quintana. I have no doubt they have asked about him. What I do doubt is that they are willing to pay the price. They could be "working hard", but how hard is it? This is what it would take, yes or no? -

QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 01:47 PM) Agreed. Yanks didn't want to let it be known they were interested and spark a bidding war. This Pirates news timed with the Morosi tweet hints that the Pirates upped their offer fearing Yankees involvement. Now Cashman either has to up his price or pull back, two things GM's dont want to do. I still think this is another White Sox plant. The Pirates are decent, but they had the same record as the White Sox in 2016. There are a lot of good teams in the NL. Seems blowing up their farm at a chance at a WC would be weird. They need a lot of things to go right to be back in playoff mode. Even with Q taking no one off their major league roster. This kind of reminds me of all the supposed "interest" in Viciedo a couple of years ago, although I am sure these teams would love Q, I don't think right now the Yankees or Pirates meeting the price makes much sense from their point of view. It may be a ploy to get the other teams involved. I am sure the White Sox would rather have their price met now than at the deadline or later when a drop in performance or injury are risks. -

QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 01:21 PM) I think you'll keep hearing it until he actually leads a rotation. Not that I agree but until he shows it. It's just not common for a guy to be an MiLB FA and perform the way he has. He has never had the hype in his career. He was overshadowed by Sale playing on a mediocre team. He was the Ben Zobrist of pitching. Guys get lost in the shuffle. Even here were people know more than the average, when there was talk about Zobrist, some thought he would make a good reserve. The guy put up 8.6, 3.8, 6.3 ,5.8, 5.0, 5.5 WAR seasons in a 6 year stretch. He was virtually unknown to be one of the best players in the game. When you thought of best players, he wouldn't come to mind, just like anyone who doesn't follow the White Sox doesn't really think of Jose Quintana when they think about the better pitchers in the game. -

QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 12:25 PM) I saw the last few minutes and while ND was trying to get cheap calls, you can tell he was going to shake hands until they tried to steal the ball and that made him pull his team off the floor before the shake. Bush League. It was the straw that broke the camel's back. Not bush league. Probably should have shaken hands, but how ND conducted itself the last 4 or 5 minutes of the game, that was bush league. -

There is zero chance the White Sox have too much pitching, but they do need to get at least some position players. Pitchers do have a higher bust rate. 2 or 3 years from now, if you need to fill 4 or 5 staring position players spots, you are going to be having some problems. -

There were a couple cheap shots near the end and the last play was ridiculous. Probably should have shaken hands, but that link doesn't tell the whole story. It also could have gotten ugly. -

QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 10:12 AM) "Working hard" is pretty imminent language. This could really accelerate with the Pirates at any time, which is BAD BAD BAD for my productivity. I don't think so. They know the price. It's just a term that they have real interest IMO. -

One thing in the Pirates favor if they traded for Quintana is if they weren't winning and decided to reset, he is still, as long as he's healthy and doing what he is doing, going to be worth a lot of prospects. They could always flip him for new ones. -

QUOTE (FT35 @ Dec 20, 2016 -> 12:29 PM) The Yankees finished in 4th place at 84-78 last year...9 games back of Boston--who just got a lot better with the Sale trade. It's just puzzling to think they would see themselves as ready to contend enough to mortgage their farm to acquire Quintana right now. Houston finished with the same 84-78 record and they were 11 games back. A guy like Quintana could make either of these 2 teams a potential 90-win team, but both would have a lot of other work to do to somehow catch the clubs in front of them who are more than just a little better than them! My sales pitch would be this...No...Quintana might not be the player who vaults either one of those teams to 1st place...but he would close at least half that gap by himself and his low salary would enable them to still go out and close it more with others. One would think they would need to do that before the season started because every win will matter for the Yankees and Astros chances of winning their division...however, the talks going on now may be more realistically laying the groundwork for a July 31st deal--just to see where they are then. I agree. I was watching MLBN yesterday and Brian Kenny was grilling Morosi as to why the Yankees would do this. Morosi, who has been called an idiot here more than once, seed to think Q's 4 years of control was a big reason. It still makes litttle sense to me why the Yankees would trade all the prospects they have just gained, but Eric Byrnes and Billy Ripken both said they need to make the trade. I don't really think there is anything to it, but I also thought Moncada was off the table. -
Here's something else. Blake Hickman put his time off because of TJS to good use. He went back to Iowa and completed his degree. https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20161220/en...te-sox-prospect

Q is great, but this really makes no sense for the Yankees. Their hope is these young guys pan out. They cannot compete with Boston now with Q,giving up what they would have to give up, would hurt their chances in the future. So unless they are prepared to spend zillions of dollars, I can't seem them making this trade. -

Why did McCaffery play the last 4 or 5 games if injury was such a concern?
